P.S. Go back to school. Toothbrush is one word...and the correct spelling is "their" (gums)--not "there gums"--unless you mean to imitate Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies ("them there gums"). And further, you are talking about a single person, so really you should say "his/her gums". Like I said....buffoon.

Love that  who thinks it's an addiction recommends drinking a beer to deal with it. Does that recommendation go for the 5-year-old too? (Notice he/she also spelled "it's"incorrectly, along with his/her inability to formulate even one grammatically correct sentence!! )

I have the same issue, in the exact place, intensely and its unbearable. The explanation is, after exercising, blood moves faster around the body, the area a person clenches the most, which for us is the teeth I guess, gets a noticeable rush of blood flowing through, its actually supposed to to tickle but instead is unbearable as hell, its like when the arm or leg falls asleep and when placed properly and blood runs through, becomes vibratingly ticklishly unbearable, its the same with the gum being itchy after an intense exercise, its normal I guess. I start to sneeze afterwards, I dont know if you do too, but its from all the tickling caused by blood flow.

I'm sorry to say that I have you ALL beat! I'm almost 54 years old and I have absolutely NO MEMORY of ever NOT having itchy gums! I've suffered with this (and I do not use that term lightly) since prior to my 3rd birthday and have spoken to countless dentists and doctors for decades about this absolutely maddening problem to no avail.

I suspect that the problem may have started for me when I first started teething. I've read many times that an injury to the gum can result in itching and I clearly remember the problem getting very bad when I started to lose my baby teeth back in elementary school.

The strangest thing about this for me is that my gums only itch in 2 places...and the 2 places are exactly symmetrical. My gums itch over the #2 and #15 upper molars. Over the years I've tried everything from salt water rinses, to ignoring it (forget that) to scratching them with my nails, paper clips, toothpicks, anything sharp enough to elicit that harsh stinging pain that immediately drowns out the itching...at least for a few minutes. The result after 50+ years is that I have literally scratched my guns so much that the gums are almost gone above the 2 molars I mentioned. They looked like "notched" gums and when I've tried to explain that to dentists that just say, "Oh, no...it's poor dental hygiene....or You're probably brushing too hard." Total c**p. I KNOW what caused it! I DID! I've been scratching since 1965 for God's sake!

The only things that have helped me (and many are mentioned in this thread) scratching at the  exact "spot" as hard as possible and then rinsing with either hydrogen peroxide or Listerine. Sometimes I rub salt into the wound also...it will numb it for a short time. It's as though in order to drown out the itch (which is like the most intense mosquito bite you've EVER had that NEVER goes away) you have to make it STING REALLY BADLY! Then the sting seems to mask the itching-at least for a while. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I can get it numb for an hour or more which is heavenly. Does it hurt? Hell yeah, it hurts! But NOTHING is worse...no pain,,,,no burning,,,no stinging,,,is as bad as that unrelentingly torturous itch!

As a last resort sometimes a take some round up aspirin and wet my fingertip and then dip my finger into the aspirin powder and hold it onto the "spot" until I feel nothing. Tr it. It tastes horrible but it's worth a try.

Like almost everyone here, my dental hygiene is excellent and I have no abscesses or funky fillings so those are not the cause. I'm resigned at this point to the fact that I will suffer with this til I die...mostly because no one takes it seriously enough to really listen and not jump to conclusions. No one in the medical field cares about this so they  just spout out whatever nonsense comes to mind with no thought whatsoever. It truly sucks. If you're reading this and have never experienced it, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!

I think this makes sense in my case. I caught a cold three weeks ago, and for two weeks now have been dealing with congestion. I noticed a week ago that I had pain in my jaw/teeth as if I had been grinding them at night - but just in a certain spot. I found this to be really strange - even though I've been uncomfortable sleeping through the night because of having congestion causing me to need to cough, blow my nose, and breathe with my mouth open at times, I didn't expect to be grinding my teeth! But that pain from grinding only came from one night and then this week I suddenly have itchy gums. Unlike the other posters, I know I have some kind of gum problems in general, but I can't understand this itching except that it probably is related to the post nasal drip for one thing, and, alternately, the fact that I ate some food last night that seemed to give me digestive upset, possibly causing inflammation in the tissues in my mouth along with the rest of my digestive tract. I know I have other gum issues, so these things probably exacerbate it, but I normally don't have itchy gums like this!

I've actually been sitting here crying, having found this forum. I thought I was the only one. I'm 17 (girl), and my gums have itched so badly I'm almost always thinking about it for about three years, on and off before that. My teeth are really healthy, and my dentists ignored me when I asked about it. I know this is gross, but normally I'll bite off my fingernails and then run them between my gums (there are about five itchy spots, but two symmetrical ones are by far the worst), or wedge them in and then feel the wonderful relief of knocking them out. After I'll drink hot tea, which "scratches" the itch even more. I have a cold today and so I took a pill with an antihistamine in it, and I'm pretty sure I scratched less, though not positive. But now (at night) I'm at it again. Hopefully there's a solution out there, I can't bear the thought of this going on for 50+ years.

This is sad. I've had this problem since I had braces in the 3Dr grade. It seems that I feel the itching sensation more when I chew on tough meat like steak. I also notice the itching more when I have a headache. I've always been very meticulous about caring for my teeth since the braces. My itchy location is the back teeth on the top row on either side and that thick piece of gum behind my two front teeth which I've picked so often that sometimes it separates from my teeth. Flossing or digging with my nails in how I deal until I'm near my toothbrush and mouthwash

Hi, it's Tilly here. It's been seven months and my lower teeth dont itch anymore. I am going to have braces for at least three years and I am in the slow phase of aligning and turning teeth - and yeah, its way much better with the lower jaw. I got braces on the upper jaw as well, those I have only for about a month, and hell, they do itch so so much! And its definitely not the hygiene, you have to be very careful and brush your teeth a lot when you have braces. For me it definitely helps. I can nearly feel the nerves rotating and being FREE, finally...

One really cool thing expanders can do, besides the obvious effect of making room for the eruption of permanent teeth and in creating jaw harmony, is the ability an expander has of widening the nasal passages and upper airway. The bone of the palate, is the same bone that makes the floor of the nasal passages. So orthodontically widening the palate also widens the nasal airway. So you might see this nice side-effect: Improved nasal breathing in your child. This improvement can be significant! This can have a life-long improvement in reducing the risk of sleep apnea, sinus and ear infections, mouth-breathing, and snoring, especially as your child moves into adulthood. Sleep can be improved!!

There has been a minor 'problem' which I think I should mention.
Here is something I found out from my Ortho:
When tissue is underdeveloped, then blood vessels are underdeveloped, too. This means that if you're supposed to have 5000 blood vessels feeding one side of the face (just an example), not only does someone like me have an underdeveloped bone structure, but blood vessels and nerves are lacking, too.
