I forgot to mention that the pediatric urologist also said to not use any soap, even mild, on her privates. And to make sure she was getting probiotics which she gets because she eats lots of yogurt and kefir. I now don't use any soap in the bath, just plain water to soak a bit then I drain the tub, have her stand up and wash her hair and body with a mild soap but no soap on her privates, just rinse that area with water. We have her constipation under control now and no more episodes so far. Cross fingers.

Firstly I just like to say how reliefed I am to find other parents in my situation, not that I wish this upon anyone.
I am starting to get to the point where I feel as If I am going mad with the lack of sleep.

My 4 1/2 year old daughter has been suffering from similar symptoms for the past 8 months.
Woken up in the night, usually about 10pm, screaming and crying in pain, usually by a sharp/burning/stinging pain in and around her vulva, she gets waves of pains and spasm.
This usually goes on until about 3am and then she is finally able to go back to sleep.

We have been to doctor after doctor, used creams, tried pain killers, ice packs, salt baths, etc and today FINALLY have some kind of answer.

We saw a lovely new doctor today and he has said that her symptoms sound like Vulvodynia.
It was so nice to see a doctor that actually sat and listened and put some thought into his diagnosis.

I don't know much about it but I have googled it and it appears to be rare in children, although from this forum that doesn't appear to be the case.

After reading up on it her symptoms seem to match.

I am unsure of the cause or the cure and there is a lot of conflicting information available online about Vulvodynia in children so I definitely recommend you return to your doctors and insist they look into Vuvlodynia or find a doctor that will.

Do not get too stressed out by the information you find online because there appears to be varying levels of Vulvodynia in Women.

We have a follow up appointment on Friday as we are waiting the results of some basic tests so I will report back when I have more information.

I hope this has helped any or all of you out :-D

My now 12 year old daughter suffered from this problem for about 6 months or so aged 8 or 9 until we sussed out that it tended to happen if she d been drinking sugary drinks during the day. She would have no complaints on going to bed, but after 30 mins or so would start to develop an itchy vulva with some swelling & obvious inflammation. When she urinated the area stung. We tried checking for worms, cold water bidets , cold compresses to no avail. On completely eliminating sugary drinks it immediately ceased. Very easy!
On the very rare occasion that she decides to drink say cola, at a party for instance, she does get a little 'warning' stinging sensation in the area at night , which is good in a way as it reminds her that it s just not worth the pain. The vast majority of the time she drinks only water or milk and has no issues now.
Sammykat I am a bit concerned concerned to hear that medics are diagnosing vulvodynia in such young girls. I m not saying it doesn t happen in the young, but hope they have eliminated more basic causes such as sugar intake, poor intake of plain fluids, soaps & washing powder irritation & poor personal hygiene. I really hope your daughter improves soon as I know it s not easy being up in the middle of the night tired & frustrated while trying to be supportive dishing out cool baths & bidets!!

Hey Suz,

Trust me, we've been through the list of possibles, no sugars, plenty of water, we've done the soap thing, changing of the washing powder, personal hygiene, etc, etc, doctor after doctor.

Vulvodynia seems to match perfectly unfortunately :-(

From what I've read Vulvodynia is more common in children than most people think because theres not much research done into it as it gets dismissed as exagerattion, poor hygeine, etc.

We just visited the doctor again yesterday and all the tests we did came back clear so we have an appointment with a peadiatrician soon, so will report on the progress then.

I'm so glad to hear that you identified your daughters problem and solved it :-)

Hopefully we'll have some answers soon too.

Id be interested to hear in evrybody elses progress.

I had the same problem with my first daughter when she was 7. She is now 22....how time flies! We went for almost a year of the nightly pain. She kept complaining of pain in her vaginal area at night. Sometimes she would scream and cry out for me because it hurt so bad. I would look and see nothing. I had her to her pediatrician on numerous occasions and they could never find anything wrong. Boy was I frustrated. I was at my wits end...until one night...she screamed and I looked down there yet again and that's when I caught sight of a very tiny white pinworm. It actually looked like a needle on the end and it was apparently poking her. I called the doctor in the morning and she apologized profusely for not finding the problem sooner. It seems that the pinworms were crawling from her warm anus at night and into her vagina and that was the pain she was feeling.
So no matter what test you have had...even the tape around the anus test to check for eggs...it does no harm to go ahead and treat for pinworms and see if the problem clears up. It is a small pill and it's best to just get one for each family member and have everyone treat at the same time. Wash and Dry on high heat all bedding. Vacuum the mattresses and I even went so far as to have the carpets shampooed which was probably overkill but they needed it anyway so no harm done. Look up information on Pinworm infestation for better directions on how to treat and prevent them. I would have never known what it was if I wouldn't have looked that night. I can only guess for how long her suffering would have continued.
Try it....It can't hurt...and it may just be your answer.

My daughter suffered from this until early this year, for her it was worms, treated her and she no longer has the problem, it took a couple of weeks to clear up but she hasn't had it since. It was always stabbing vaginal pain that she felt.

My 8 year old daughter is experiencing pain at night maybe 4 out of 7 nights a week now and has been for near enough two months. She's had this before, we've tried cranberry juice, antiseptic creams, warm baths, plenty of water, pain relief none of which has worked in helping her. The only thing that helps is one of us cuddling her to sleep in our bed. The doctor has ruled out so many things that we are no looking into the idea that it maybe attention seeking. I am so glad I found this group of comments, I can now at least go back to the doctor armed with a couple more tests they could maybe run. Thank you for speaking up it's helped.

I was doing research on my 8 year old daughter with Kidney stones...I came across this post and another link that talked about vaginal stones in young children. It is rare but it might be something to consider researching.

Hi my daughter who is five now has been suffering from this since the age of 3. And it is the same symptoms as alot of everyone on this forum, pain by her anus and by her vagina, but both day an night. This is obviously a major problem in young girls so why are the doctor's are saying there is nothing wrong when clearly there is a problem!!!
Has anyone being diagnosed yet??

My two girls are 10 and 7, and we have been dealing with this for years. Our doctor had no idea what to do. We tried everything he said, but nothing helped. Finally went to a new doctor, who had 2 suggestions. 1-constipation can hurt in the vaginal area, so be sure to keep track of the girls bowel movements. I did this and found they weren't exactly regular, even thought they didn't seem to be constipated. 2-their urine is too acidic. It could be one or more likely both of these things. I have been really watching their diet. More vegetables and water. They don't like soda, which can cause a lot of acid, but they did drink a lot of juice. I cut way back on the juice, and water down what little juice they still do drink. The doctor also told me to give them each 1/2 a tablet of "Tums" everyday to help with the acid level. So far this has been working. In the past month only one of my daughters has had any pain at all, and it coincided with some irregularity. Dr also said the pain being only at night is probably because the other stimuli that occupies the brain all day is gone, and so pain is noticeable then. Not necessarily that it doesn't burn or itch some during the day, just that they don't notice it til all other distractions are gone.

This seems to be helping my girls, hopefully may help someone else as well.
