I have done some research on this topic, I think it may be levator syndrome. I am very worried myself as I have two younger sisters. Particularly my three year old, who I have seen doing what looks like masturbating (putting one of her toys on her bed then lying on top of it whilst moving her hips up and down so thAt it penetrates her. She also makes grunting noises and moaning a bit whilst doing this. I'm the only one who's seen her doing this but my parents won't believe me.)
My 5yo daughter had been waking during the night, screaming in pain in her vagina saying it was burning or stinging like a knife and the only thing that seemed to alleviate the pain a little was a cold pack she would hold against her . I would plan to take her to the doctor in the morning thinking urinary tract infection but when she woke she was perfectly fine, no problems going to the toilet, no more pain and otherwise healthy for weeks. She did it about 3 times over about 3 months and I was quite distressed unable to help her and wondering what on earth it was or what i could do to help her at midnight which is when I found this discussion. I am however sooo happy to have discovered it is threadworm (also known as pinworm). My girlfriend's daughters had it and said if you are ready and have someone else turn on the light in the bedroom you will actually see the thin little worm in her vagina and can quickly grab it with a tissue and pull it off . She did it with her daughters and said the pain relief was instant as soon as the worm was gone and they will roll over and go to sleep. I had no idea you could get worms there!!! I was horrified but apparently they like warm, moist areas and I suspect they must have been laying eggs there each cycle which was causing the pain as they burrowed and why it only happened on occasion. That night I checked my daughter's anus while she was sleeping and saw tiny specks which I think were the eggs. Our whole family has since taken some worming medicine and I have seen the tiny thread-like worms in her faeces (but not moving so they are dead!!!) so she definitely had them. I hadn't noticed her itching her bottom but I did ask if she'd been itchy in her back passage and she said she had been. The good news is treatment is so quick and easy. I am so relieved as I feared so many worse things were the cause!
THANK YOU "GUEST" FOR YOUR POST!!!Please excuse my english, my 1st language is french...
My daugther has had this problem for YEARS now and YES it was Pinworms indeed!!! Very hard to diagnose because they come out only at night and since the pain was mostly in her vulva, I would have never guessed it could be worms. And I did not know it could be so painful... As a matter of fact when we read about Pinworms, it never mentions the pain it can cause... But the description of this infection fitted perfectly with what she was going through.
I saw them last night with the flashlight. The whole familly has been treated and we are washing the house like crasy... Cross our fingers it does not reoccur. we will have a second treatment in 2 weeks.
To everybody with this problem:[ Check your daughter's anal area about one hour after she has been asleep, this is when the female comes out to lay eggs. Do not turn on the light in the bedroom, just use a flashlight and you will see tiny worms (about 1/4 inch longs). I used a scotch tape to collect some samples and brought it to the doctor... Because it's impossible to see anything during the day, this made the diagnosis much easier.
Hope this helps!!

I cannot believe how happy I am to have just discovered my daughter has worms! I have lived through many horrid, horrid nights recently with my "baby" (5 years old) in agony, writhing in pain around her vulva: just awful.
I followed the advice above & there they were having a night time excursion on my poor baby's bottom. Thank you God for this thread - it has truly saved many more nights of gut wrenching anxiety. Thank you to all of you & good luck to the rest of you in solving your baby's pains. By the way I was Mrs sceptical about finding anything when I went to check, how wrong can you be!

This is for the person who is worried about her 3yr old masterbating,my daughter was diagnoised with this at 2yrs,its called Infantile Gratification Disorder, babies as young as 6 months can do it.What you have to do is when you think she is having an"EPISODE" take her mind of what she is doing by taking her out for a walk or read a book etc.I dont tell my daughter its bad i just try and stop her before she starts, hope this helps and good luck.
I just wanted to say my daughter has had this pain since she was 3 (she is now 10) doctors have not been able to find anything. We tried colloidial silver on a cotton ball and she put this on the area that was sore. The pain has not returned in over 4 months. Hopefully this may be able to help someone.
Hi I just wanted to say thanks I was going to take my daughter to the GP this morning as she has been displaying these symptoms on and off for the last few months and I had thought it was in her in head (she can be a bit of a drama queen) but now I see that it is real. Esp thanks to the lady who suffered with it as a child, to know that someone had it and grew up fine and that it goes away is reassuring.
Just curious those that did take their child to the dr, did you end up getting a diagnosis?

I would like to say thank you to the people on this page who have finally been able to give me answers after years of different doctors not having a clue of what was going on. After reading today about pinworms I have just awoke yet again with my 5 year old crying in pain and have noticed 3 thread like worms. I will be ringing my doctor first thing in the morning and hopefully I will be able to sort this problem out once and for all.
I am doctor (GP), and my 6 year-old also complains of intense burning vaginal pain at night. Like the rest of our little girls, nothing during the day. She does not have pinworms (has had them once), and is otherwise completetely normal to look at. No irritation, no yeast, nothing unusual at all. It is complete mystery to me. Vaginismus is the closest I can come to an answer (muscle spasms), but she is rather young for that. The most frustrating thing is not being able to SEE anything abnormal, even when it is happening. I usually just wipe/dab with a cold washcloth and apply thick diaper cream. That and a bit of TLC seems to help, at least for a while. If all else fails, paracetamol might help.
Next time I talk to one of my gynecologist friends, I'll ask and post if I learn more.

I just wanted you all to know that my little girl has the same pain only at night and its fianlly been diagnosed as THREADWORM all the family need treatment as its highly contagious Ive been told. Apparently its only at night that the worm can be seen externally if you know what you are looking for. I do hope thisd is helpfull to some of you if not all. x
My daughter is now 8 and has been suffering from this from the age of 3. Been to 3 different hospitals, seen dozens of doctors, only to be told it was threadworm. Last year, I had had enough and told my doctor he needed to get a consultant on the case. We are now seeing a wonderful consultant, but to be honest, he doesnt actually know what causes this. She can go every night for a week with pain, then nothing for about a month, and yes always at night. Seeing consultant again in 3 months time, will keep you all posted.
I am so glad i found this forum, seem is common altho we dont now the why :-( my daughter is 4 years old and she has the same pains, it happens for the third time lastnight and i been worried to dead since because she is fast asleep and wakes crying that hurts and it looks so painful to look at them :-( is so bad they have to suffer so little, I was planning to take her to the drs but thought to google it first as i dont really want her to go round to different drs to get medicines that are not going to help and well embarrassing for her to talk too because she cant explain why, all she does is point :-( so please if any news come email me. Thank you
my 3 and a half yr old daughter has suffered with muscle spasms in the anus, which is called proctalgia fugax,a lot of health professionals have not heard of this, however the treatment is quite simple and effective, sabutamol inhaler (asthma pump) however after experimenting with it i found that giving it to her during attack actually made it worse,so i gave it to her about 4 hrs before bed,and thankfully she hasnt had an attack for a long while.lately though she has been experiencing a similer problem with stabbing pains and burning sensation in her vaginal area, and a spray or 2 of the sabutamol seems to help,as it helps to relax the internal muscles,i hope this helps.
Have any of you thought of sexual abuse ???
That's great news that the inhaler helps but the thing is when it will happen? because is random as in months apart :-( is why is so weird.
Solarya that's the first thing i thought. But no, is not the case thank goodness.
