Hi guys,

After reading all your posts, i'm kinda nervous about removing my roids. Well, i just want to know couple of things.

1 - how long does it take to recover?

2 - what happens to the rubber band? Does it dissolve or pass out?

Btw, im 20. :)

I am recovering from my second rubber banned ligation procedure. I had Doppler guided arterial ligation done in July 2012 along with skin tag removal of very large skin tag.  That was probably the most painful experience of my life.  The Doppler procedure failed me so I  attempted banding in November 2012.  It has not as painful as the Doppler/skin tag removal; however, there was some feeling of pressure down there. Yesterday, I underwent another banding with sleep sedation.  The doctor put in 4 bands and the feeling when I woke up was intense pressure and I could not get comfortable at all.  I had a two hour car ride home and that was agonizing even after taking a Vicodin.  When I got home, I immediately soaked in a hot bath and that helped tremendously. I did not sleep well last night, but am feeling better today. Make sure to increase fluid intake and fiber prior to the banding and try to relax as much as possible.  Just be prepared to be uncomfortable for at least 24 hours but remember it should be worth it.  Good luck to all who are considering this procedure or who are having it done.

PS The band wraps around the hemorrhoid and tissue.  After about 4-10 days, the tissue dies and falls off with the rubber band and both pass during a bowel movement.

I had RBL 9 days ago and am still in so much pain. The dr said I had two small internal hemorrhoids, and banded them at the same time. He also told me there was barely any pain associated with the procedure and that ibuprofen would help alleviate any pain that I did feel afterwards. The actual procedure wasn't too bad. It only lasted 2-3 minutes and was bearable. The worst part was the insertion of the scope. Afterwards, I was ok for a couple of minutes, and then holycrap the pain hit me hard!! I could barely walk, and I was dry heaving and crying a little bit. The nurse handed me my paperwork and shoed me out the door. I asked for something to help with the pain and she told me to try taking ibuprofen when I arrived home. That drive home was excruciating!!!! When I got home I took 1000 mg of ibuprofen and it did NOTHING. I paced around, tried a bath, tried laying down, standing up, every position possible but it was complete agony. Finally I called the surgeon back up and was bawling on the phone and told them i needed help, and finally they said they'd leave a prescription for Vicodin at the front desk. Luckily I had someone that could go pick it up for me. After a hefty dose of Vicodin the pain settled down and I was able to go to sleep. About 24 hours later I felt really good, and was pleased that I had gotten through the pain and had the procedure. Then the next day, I developed a brand new external hemorrhoid, and it hurt SO bad. It was alarming to me, so I went back to the Dr to have it checked out, and they said it wasn't thrombosed, but was just irritation from the banding procedure. They gave me creams to use on it and sent me on my way.

Now here I am, 9 days later, and unless I take a very large dose of ibuprofen or Vicodin, I'm still in so much pain. Going to the bathroom is excruciating. I don't know what happened, but I think something was screwed up during my procedure, because it seems like a lot of people don't have too many issues afterward.

The intent of my story is to inform people that are thinking of having this done. Make sure you do the research, and get a second opinion if possible from a second surgeon to make sure this is the right choice for you. I felt I had run out of options, but I think there were other options that they didn't offer to me that would have been better.

Finally, please remember that obviously it is good to keep the entire area very clean, and baths do help with that, but I don't know why everyone keeps saying that hot baths help the pain?!! I personally think they make it worse. Ice helps so so much. Just stick an ice cube or a package of frozen peas or whatever you have right on your anus and after a few minutes you will feel a lot better. Too bad there isn't a portable butt icing device that could be used while we are in public, since it's impossible to stay home forever :-) And also hopefully I won't need the ice soon.

I am a woman 35 years old and i had this procedure done on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.  30 minutes after the procedure I was driving home and in so much pain.  I have had four children and I have to say that the pain of this did not even compart to the pain of labor.  I can't believe I even made it home.  Once home, I sat in hot hot water for about 15 minutes and then took two vicodins.  I was in no much pain I was scared something had went wrong.  The next morning, I woke up and I felt fine.  Besides a slight, mild irritation, it was nothing compared to the previous day.  I ended up going to work, which is an office job and I do have to sit all day.  I made it a conscience choice to get up and walk around the office at for a few minutes every hour.  By 3:30 there was some slight pain and I realized I should've purchased one of those donught cushions.  In the office bathroom, I used hot hot papertowels and pressed them against myself for a few minutes to releive some of the pain.  I was not able to take pain relievers at work so therefore I waited until I got home.  This morning is day 3. So far, so good.  It is about noon.  No real uncomfortable pain at this point.

I would like to suggest though that if anyone has this procedure done that they do the following:

Take pain medication BEFORE the procedure.  Soak in hot hot water as often as you can to help with the pain.  Day one, for me, was the worst.  If you can get past that, then the rest of the days are okay. Purchase a donught cushion and use it.

And... Good Luck!!  I am hoping all of this was worth it... mine did not really bother me too much, it was just so seriously annoying and I wanted to get rid of it.

I had a RBL 7 days ago.  Lots os pressure and pain for the first 48-72 hours.  Would take prescription Tylenol 3 every 4 hours, and 2 before bed (only was I could sleep).  Pain decreased after 3 days.  However, starting day 4 the pain went from pressure pain to burning sensation.  This has been going on for 3 days, and amplifed after BM.  Has anyone had something similar?

I had mine 3 days ago, painful first two days, then the pain was less..but then "surprise" spasms! Woke me up! I had my second bowel movement today, it hurt a lot after my bath even after 2 hours. So i placed ice into a rubber glove and held it to my anus. What a relief!
