allergic to most antibiotics

Hi, I am allergic to most antibiotics, so when I get an infection it’s almost impossible to get a medicine for me. Even when I get a safe antibiotic, I always take it with fear of having allergy or side effects. Is there any other option for me, except antibiotics?

I am allergic to all antibiotics which cause my throat to close and increased asthma symptoms, heart racing, etc. Right now I have a sinus infection following the flu. I am trying to get rid of it by using a Netti pot twice a day and saline nose spray 3 to 4 times a day. It works with patience but not every time and this time it is particularly bad so I am not sure. The last time I took a Zpak on the second dose my heart POUNDED for 15 hours. I don't know what the significance of that is, but it felt horrible. I wish there were some answers but I have not had any allergist or other docs who have been able to help me either.
During one of the wor;d wars there were no antibioitics available at some point and it is reported that honey was used in wounds to prevent infection as there are antibiotic properties in it.

Antibiotics are trained to do one thing and one thing only: Kill bacteria. They are very effective at that. The problem is that they do not distinguish between "good" and "bad" bacteria, and they end up wiping out all the good bacteria in your digestive tract, which causes all manner of havoc. This impairs not only your ability to digest food properly, but to assimilate and metabolize the nutrients contained in the food. This can manifest in things that are just a generally bad reaction that most people would identify as an allergic response, when in fact it's just your own bodies immune system shutting down, where the antibiotic takes over. It's never a pleasant experience when doctors prescribe antibiotics without mentioning the importance of taking a probiotic during and after your regiment of antibiotics. Probiotics help keep your body in as much balance as possible during the awkward transition of "killing the bad." Probiotics are crucial. Antibiotics are also associated with a heightened risk of getting a yeast infection or urinary tract infection, due to the depletion of good flora in the intestines, which causes an overgrowth of the naturally present yeast "Candida albicans" in the body. An overgrowth of this bacteria is virtually unavoidable while taking antibiotics, because the good bacteria usually present is not there to keep it in check. Restoring this flora is crucial to general health and well being. I recommend going to your local health food store and finding a good probiotic. While you are taking the antibiotics, take the probiotics at least an hour away from them, to avoid them "canceling eachother out". Also, the directions on the bottle are meant for NORMAL probiotic consumption, and do not meet critical, therapeutic levels, so take as many as you need to feel as close to "normal" as you can. Do not worry about taking to much probiotics unless you have an immunodeficiency syndrome, such as HIV. Probiotics are natural and necessary in the human gut, for nutrient assimilation and immune function. Continue to take them when you have finished your antibiotics, to restore the natural flora in your body. Antibiotics are not a wonder drug administered in and of themselves. When they are administered alone, (i.e, without probiotics) you are actually only making the situation worse. They should not be used for superficial infections like ear and sinus infections, or even skin infections, unless you are fairly positive it is systemic, (in the blood.) You always want to give your own immune system a fighting chance, it is a finely tuned mechanism and is capable of programming a tight response to future exposure to infectious bacteria. If you feel your immune system is not up to the task, make sure you are fairly confident in that decision, because antibiotics help you in a complicated way that leaves your system more vulnerable later. And in closing, anytime you DO take antibiotics, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take probiotics. There is absolutely zero antibiotics out there that you won't experience some level of system disturbance and imbalance with, because they kill all bacteria. We need bacteria to live. We ARE bacteria. Bacteria and life go hand in hand. I hope this helps some of you. Look up things like Candida Albicans, and probiotics, and also, MRSA, and the looming reality of having to learn to survive without antibiotics, due to resistant bacteria. Antibiotics have helped us. But they have also helped the bacteria to become stronger and more lethal. Immune to even bleach. It is imperative that we educate ourselves outside of contemporary medicine at this juncture in evolution, because humans v.s bacteria has hit a stalemate and we are creating superbugs, while our immune systems are being underused at critical learning curves, such as an infection.
I cannot tell you guys how THRILLED I am that I found this web site. I, too have severe allergies to ALL antibiotics & steroids. I have had medical doctors tell me there is no way any one can be allergic to that many drugs even when I tell them that they are anaphylactic reactions. Do these doctors think I was bored one day and decided to write a fake drug allergy list? It is soooo frustrating because the only antibiotic I am able to take (thankfully with no problem at all) is Azactam. Unfortunately, it does not come in a pill form so when I get an infection, I usually end up in the hospital getting IV therapy for a week to 10 days depending on the severity of the infection. One time I was in the hospital for this and I REALLY wanted to go home so I looked into getting the IV therapy at home. What a joke. Believe it or not, the way that works is that a nurse comes to your house ONE TIME, starts the IV, and shows you how to adminidter the medication yourself. They don't even use a pump so it's VERY easy to administer the drug too slow or too fast. And if you need help with the IV, you have to call an 800 number. I SWEAR to God this is true. My allergist even apoke with them and they told him that this is the way it's done. I can't believe this allowed. Anyway, I'm sorry this post is so long, but every doctor I've been to was skeptical about my drug allergies with the exception of my 2 allergists who found out first hand how quickly I reacted to a drug. Thank you so much for reading this and letting me get my frustration off of my chest. I thought I was alone in this. Take care and have a good day. :-)
Its nice to see that I am not the only one allergic to most or all antibiotics.. About a year ago I had yet another uti so they gave me one of the sulfur antibiotics. Within 20 mins my tongue was swollen and I couldnt feel my throat took 3 benadryls and called the doctor they said ok wait one day and take another kind, and the other kind worked great, So I figured no more problems yeah right.. In Aug of this year had a bladder infection so once again Dr said take cipro because of the sulfur allergy, Became allergic to that one, Doctor said ok take yet another one (forgot the name) became allergic to that one also. Now at the same time as bladder infection I got bronchitits and a sinus infection, So Dr once again said take amoxicillin, Became allergic to that also, So my only choice was z-pac, they said if I was allergic to that one basically there was nothing left for me to do. After 10 mins of zpac I had a swollen tongue, swollen face and was throwing up. Called Dr and they were shocked to hear that yet another antibiotic caused an allergic reaction. . And basically the only way I can take antibiotics is if I'm Dying.. Normally I wouldnt complain about this but being a female we do end up with certain times when we need alittle help with antibiotics. And when we do go to a new Dr they look at us like we are freaks because we cant take antibiotics..
I get an itichy red rash all over my body when I take an anti-biotic. The only way I can get rid of it is to go see my Chinese acupuncturist and have several sessions with him. He agrees that I cannot take any more anti-biotics. I don't know what I am going to do, but I appreciate the tips given above by people with the same, scary problem. I end up taking a lot of Aveeno baths to relieve the itching, and I get some anti-itch stuff from my dermatologist. Also, Benydral and Cortisone sprays are helpful, along with Aveeno cream.
Hey out there, for those of you concerned about antibiotic intollerances and allergies, try out Bioenergetic Intolerance Elimination (B.I.E.), I have tried it out myself and had some positive effects. It's a fairly recent holisitc allergy treatment, which can certainly help you more then Western doctors can. A simple solution for a very unpleasant problem. Hang in there.
Hey. I am 22 and allergic to most antibiotics also. Its seems to be natural antibiotics that I am allergic too. Im allergic to anything in the Keflex family, Cillin family, Iodine, Sulfur, Benadryl, and Erythromycin. These are all that I have tried and had an allergic reaction too. Most reactions would come within several days of take the antibiotic. Benadryl I can use the gel kinda that goes on rashes but I can not take the pill version of it. The only antibiotic my doctor gives me now its Azithromycin. Its been the only antibiotic that I have taken multiple times and not developed a reaction to. My Grandmother and great grandmother are both allergic to antibiotics like me.A doctor when I was younger said in one of his college books he read of a rare syndrom that sounded like this. I don't remember what it was called, neither does my mother. I have looked up a list of syndromes and rare syndromes and found nothing sounding like this. My mother also said she watched a episode of House M.D. and it was on there. I don't know if its true or not and I haven't found any episode like that. But it would be something to look into.If anyone is able to find any information about this, I would greatly appreciate to learn about it.Also I went to an allergy doctor and had test run on me to see what i was allergic too. I don't remember if they run test on these antibiotics but no medicine came up that I was allergic to at the day of the test just stuff like mold, pollen, dust mites, etc.
A Fix to my last post.I was mistaken. It was ER that she saw it on. Sorry

Hi there,One of our kids is allergic to several antibiotics including the ones most prescribed (amoxycillin & biaxin). He recently took Suprax which is a third generation cephalosporin with no reaction. But that's no guarantee that he won't react to it next time. This is a scary allergy to have. You eventually need antibiotics. Previous posters have mentioned probiotics and alternative remedies. I think it's a good idea to try these (we use probiotic yogurt and green tea), but for acute illnesses such as pneumonia, we're not willing to rely solely on them. A couple of previous posters mentioned desensitization, and I have asked our doctor (and pharmacist) about it as well. Surprisingly, they knew very little about it, which probably speaks to how little they see this type of allergy. But I've read quite a bit about it, and it does seem to have a fairly good track record. We have our fingers crossed that we never have to go that route, but if you've stumbled upon this website as I did, I encourage you to google antibiotic desensitization so that you have a plan B. For whatever reasons, doctors aren't quick to bring it up (expensive, maybe?), but you should definitely have it in your tool belt. All the best to all of you- this multi drug allergy problem is very stressful, and very little research has gone into it. Hopefully this will change soon.
