I am scheduled for Holep with Dr. Bandi on Sept 3, 2021. I am preparing for this procedure by performing the suggested Kegel exercises and obtaining the various blood tests. I have a long history of elevated PSA, history of family BPH and a prostate of 164 gm. Would like to know how you are doing post surgery. Thank you.

I am doing fantastic. Me-231g - removed 177grams; Moses 2.0 laser w Dr Amy Krambeck in Chicago. Out patient w “no” catheter; She is my hero!  I can send y my diary of recoup. Today is day 18. Tip#1 1st 2 days I put alarm every 2.5 hrs to get up, pee, water, n change pads. Tip #2 - start taking colace week before - u will get a 14 day script for laxative n softener n advised to take miralax daily; after surgery I was 7 days without BM. Never want to strain. Now still doing colace n miralax daily w grapes, oatmeal cookie n peaches to avert any straining. Tip #3: water, water, water…to date still watering all day…Mike in Louisiana

I had forgotten about the no bowel movement for a few days after surgery. Miralax did not work for me, but once I took Milk of Magnesia all was good. What a relief. I wore the large Depends diaper thing for a couple of weeks, then went to large pads until I switched to small pads. My urethra was tender for weeks till it finally healed and felt normal. Overall, what an amazing procedure, never have to worry about urine retention again. Urinate like a young man.

Its been 5 weeks since holep and so far its been a piece of cake. I am getting close to normal with very little leakage/dribbling etc. No waking up in the middle of the night 4-6 times, sensitivity and soreness is gone. Can't thank Dr. Anderson and the staff at Miami Valley South enough for a job above and beyond all expectations.

Ditto here...4 weeks on 8/11; I can put a fire out a 5 gallon bucket with a nice arch on the stream! Luv it....only have a slight burn at end of pee - I guess its because of that large cavity that is there now....Never had blood or clots - other than rosy red 1st 2 days.....since then - amazing recoup...

Does anyone know whether Dr. Claus Roehrborn uses the HoLEP procedure in Dallas or Ft. Worth?

Will have HOLEP with Dr. Bandi Sept 3, 2021 Is there anything typically patients miss in our preparation which could be of value considering the procedure and recovery

I kept a diary.  First of all, start colace a week before to ensure soft stools. Y will get a script after surgery, but I did not prepare n I went 7 days wait on BM - horrible! Mike in Louisiana

I don't think DR. Roehrborn does HoLEP anymore. I live near Dallas and had to drive to Temple, TX, to have my HoLEP procedure done with Dr. Tayeb. There is also a Dr. near OKC who does HoLEP. At a checkup at UT Southwestern I mentioned to my urologist about why they didn't have a DR. who did HoLEP. He said they have one in training, but he needs more time to prefect his craft.

Start Kegels to strengthen the muscles to help with leakage afterwards. Spent the night beforehand at a hotel if you have to drive a distance. Have a large Depend diaper for the ride home , fo you will probably leak a lot. It's a fairly pain free procedure afterwards. Just takes time to receiver. You will have a sore urethra for a few weeks.

PS, the only thing that worked for me in post operation bowel movements was Milk of Magnesia. Nothing else worked.

IMO, the reason is $; A private Dr can do many turps in 1 day- maybe up to ? 6-10; HoLEP can do about 2-3 in one day - takes long to perform: Me - in at 10:30 - recovery at 1:30; walked out at 4pm w no catheter. Big metro hospitals w Uro residency training is where y find HoLEP experienced dr. Read that 50 procedures is the number to be proficient - difficult to learn and takes so long to perform for local urologists.

I am amazed you walked out of the hospital the same day. I enjoyed staying overnight receiving the care after a major surgery.
