I LOVED my Mirena. I had very light periods for only two to three days. I had it removed today because we are going to try for a second child. As soon as I had it removed I began bleeding (literally on my way home). My Dr.s nurse said this was possible. Everyone is different, so it is hard to know exactly what will happen. I have heard of women bleeding very heavily for weeks and women only bleeding a little. My OB said the women who have removed them and wanted to get pregnant have concieved within the first 6 months, so that is good news. One lady concieved the month after she had it removed. I would never recommend removing the Mirena on your own. You could tear or perforate something on removal. The doctors remove it the same way that they insert it, very carefully! I am hoping that I do not have terrible bleeding, but I did before I had my Mirena, so go figure!
I stared bleeding on November 18, 2009 so I had my Mirena removed on November 24, 2009 because it had moved after 2 years and was causing heavy bleeding which my doc was having to prescribe something every month to stop. I have been given every know to man drug to stop the bleeding and nothing seemed to help until they put me on Aygestin which after taking for two week slowed the bleeding down to just spotting. Went back to the Doc Dec 10, 2009 and was told that I would need to come off the Aygestin and if the bleeding came back I would need to have a D/C. Here I am Dec 14, 2009 and the bleeding is back. I will not recommend a Mirena to even my worse enemy!! I hope this all comes to an end very very soon. I have read every post I could find on when the bleeding might stop and no one seems to say.
Bleeding now for almost 3 weeks after removal!!
Bleeding now for almost 3 weeks after removal!!
Ugh same problems, had mine out a week after my period, it caused IBS and lots of stomach problems, a friend had hers out and her stomach problems went away the next day, as did mine. But I have had heavy bleeding for 3 weeks now, tried an ovulation kit, and nothing, maybe the blood messes it up. My husband says I should go to the doctor, I say what can they do or say? So you are bleeding, get over it is my guess. Anyway, I would definitely not recommend the Mirena, trouble from day one, weight gain, bloating permanently, I had to have a colonoscopy at 29, bm only once a week, and then get it removed just to bleed none stop, maybe I should buy stock into tampax?
I used to have the injection for 10 years and once it wore off I fell pregnet, then pregnet again so after the second child I went and got the MIRENA which was 8 years ago ( I know past the 5 years) which was the best thing I ever got...no periods, the only thing is after reading all the comments, I did have alot stomach issues on and off but the Doctor could never figure it out(prob not related). I just had it removed over a week ago and at first my period was really light & pale and from day 2 I have had such heavy bleeding and blood clots I am having to change every half an hour with major tummy twisting cramps I can actually feel the come out YUK... I am sure it will go soon!!! Before I had my first baby I had an enormous blot clot come out so I went into hospital and had the baby within 2 hours, the nurses couldn't figure it out but said it could be a build up from being on the injection. WISHING ALL THE WOMAN OUT THERE WITH HORRIBLE BLEEDING & CLOTS... A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MAY IT GO AWAY FOR US ALL AND BRING BACK OUR NORMAL HORMONES!
I HATE THE MIRENA! It was the worst experience of my life. I had it for 18 months, and just had it removed three days ago. I don't know why I put myself thorugh what I went through. 18 months of spotting - no kidding! Constant spotting, and bleeding after sex... I am fed up!!! I should be compensated for the suffering I went through - the doctors kept telling me that it would go away.. just give it some more time as everyone's body is different! I know three people who had it, we all got it inserted months apart -- and guess what not even one of us had a good experience. Now... I had it removed... and have been bleeding heavy ever since! And funny to say... there is no literature on what happens after it is removed, not even my doctor knows for sure how long this will last!!! And this is approved in Canada!!!!! Needless to say... Im very upset!!! Happy to hear someone didn't get side effects, but from reading these posts... it seems like the majority of users have complications and side effects!
I had my IUD removed last Monday, 1/11/2010, and I bleed heavaly for 6 days with some clotting, and then for the last couple days it has been lighter, and now it is gone. I am just trying to ease some minds that are thinking you might bleed forever, I read all these posts in horror thinking it might not stop but mine did, but you should always check with your Doctor anyway.
Hi Ladies
Had my mirena removed after just seven months and am bleeding quite heavily. Since the mirena does makes your body think it's pregnant and for a few weeks after giving birth we tend to bleed, I am assuming this is going to be very similar. So I'm sure there's no need to worry just yet.

I was told by the RN that I would bleed after removal because Mirena has hormones in it & my body would now be adjusting. I had it out a week ago.. still having bleeding & clots. I removed it because of painful sex & frequent infections.
I am so glad to find other Mirena sufferers. I had mine removed a week ago and I just stopped bleeding/clotting heavily 2 days ago. Now it's just a mucus like substance. For the first year I had severe abdominal pain every month. I went to the Dr. and they adjusted its position and the pain stopped. I did however continue to have bleeding and pain with sexual intercourse. Not to mention the cord caused my partner some minor discomfort. Glad to have it gone. Looking forward to getting back to normal.
I'm having a simular experience. Had the Mirena inserted in March 2008 and after almost 2 years of sharp, stabbing pains I had it removed. Two days later I started bleeding and I've passed two HUGE clots, from what I can they're full of tissue. I've chalked it up my uterus cleaning itself out.
I had a Mirena IUD for 5 years and truly loved it. I had no side effects from the IUD and no periods during the time it was in. I had it removed Dec. 28. 2009, because the 5 years was up. I was starting to have some discharge and I was thinking at the time, I'm ready for this thing to come out of me. I had no plans to start a BC or put a new IUD in at this time. So being told by my gyn that I would start a period shortly after then within a month I would be on track with regular periods. I thought "no biggy... it’s a period" 3-5 days I can handle being a woman. Well January12-15th I started with a period for it seemed normal..."no biggy, Riiigggttt". Well here comes another period January 20th and it hasn’t stopped, plus it’s a BIGGY! Very heavy just like what I have read on this forum that most of all the other women are experiencing. I have called my gyn and she wants to put me on BC or do another IUD. I’m not sure at this point. I truly was hoping this would stop but as I read I don’t think it will be soon. Good Luck to everyone!
Hi ladies wow you all had so much problems on this Mirena well had mine for almost the five years got married in Jan had mine removed on the 4th got a normal period on the 6th my doc told me that it would happen and that the good thing about Mirena is you are ovulating in the background the whole time its in. Anyhow my husband and I want to try and have a baby I had a normal period for 5 days and it went away we have been trying and about two weeks after removel i had one night for a hour bleeding. Then nothing and my next period was due on Feb3 a week before I was due I started spotting brown blood and have been for a week can't even fill a tampon not even a lite one and its in for three to four hours. I have no idea could I be pregant have had some signs feeling sick tired not being able to eat stuff I love..lol Is this normal or what and do I count this as a period or no?? Took home test it said no?? Even stoped bledding one night two days after spoting started and had intercorse and next day spoting again help!!!
I had mine taken out 3 days ago for the same reasons as someone else posted, painful sex and frequent infections. I had it for 8 mths and hated it. Not the lack of periods, but all the other side effects. So I did alot of research on it before I got it taken out and saw that this was a possible outcome. Someone recommended drinking red rasberry leaf tea. You get it from a natural herb shop and its supposed to help with anything regarding the uterus. The woman who testified by this said she went to the ER with heavy bleeding after it was taken out, then found out about the tea. She said after 2 days of drinking it, the period was down to a normal flow, and after 5 it was just some spotting. I started drinking the tea within hours after I got mine out (2 cups a day), and I just had a mini period last night, enough to soak one pad. Today is very light spotting. This is a miracle for me cause before bc I always had 7 day long heavy periods. Obviously I still need to wait and see what happens once I get a normal flow, but hope this helps!
neither have i, but maybe you didnt leave it in long enough - i kept mirena in for 5 years. which consisted of insertion, 88 days of heavy to light bleeding and then 4.5 years of freedom. i just had it removed a few weeks ago and have been bleeding ever since. trying to figure out what to do next.
I had my mirena in for almost 3 years. I decided to have it removed at the beginning of February, due to complications. I unfortunately had to have it surgically removed, I bleed for a few days afterwards. Then everything was fine. Well, I finally started my period on Sunday (3/7) and it has been the heaviest period I've ever had in my life. I'm not quite sure if it's normal to have such a heavy one after this thing was removed. While I had the mirena in I rarely had a period. I would occassionally spot and then it would be done, in fact I haven't to buy tampons or pads in almost 3 years. Just a panty liner would suffice. So, now, I don't know if this is normal or not.
