I got screwed. I'm only 1/8th Japanese and managed to get that terrible gene that causes these symptoms. The issue is, most of me is fair skinned European descent, therefore, my reddening and flushing shows through ten times worse because I don't have a tan base to counteract the red flushing. I am a college student who likes to enjoy myself, and found that Pepcid Complete works the best. It's somewhat hit or miss, but I would say it hits more often than it misses. Another interesting thing I found, and I'm not sure if it is related to this issue whatsoever, is that I find I can drink a lot more alcohol than most people and be fine. I'm not big whatsoever (5'8 135lbs), tiny by some standards, but can nearly finish an entire bottle to myself without throwing up that night. I constantly out drink my friends who have several inches and even a hundred pounds on me. If anyone has any explanation on this I would love a response.

This happened to me for the first time 3 days ago. I am still experiencing it now. Starting to get scared. I went to an annual festival on Saturday in my hometown where I always see old friends and we hang out by the river drinking in the sun listening to bands and chatting. Over the course of 16 hours, I may have had one beer an hour. I started to feel the pain late Saturday night but thought nothing of it as I went to bed. Woke up Sunday unable to raise my arms over shoulder height with achy joints and really sensitive skin/muscles. Especially in my biceps forearms and sides of chest. After discussing with my family we thought it was dehydration.
So all day Sunday I chugged water and sometimes Gatorade.
Later on that day, my lower back started hurting so much and the soreness seemed to have spread to my quadriceps, calves and shins. By late evening the pain had somewhat subsided with minimal discomfort.
Monday morning I woke up with the extreme pain with maximum stiffness and bruising/ cramped feeling in my forearms, biceps, legs and lower back. Again, it seemed to get better as the day progressed but now today I have the same feeling again as I woke. Ive been hydrating now for 3 days and am really starting to get worried.
The only thing I can think of is that about a month ago I caught a really bad stomach virus. I have always had an iron stomach but after having a kid, I have gotten more sick over the last year and a half than previous 20 years. So this stomach virus lasted over a week and kept me running to the bathroom and in agony for most of the time. I am wondering if the lasting effects of the virus may have triggered something that has now made me unable to metabolize alcohol (beer). I have not tried this with anything else as I a still feeling pain with almost every movement. My god, if ANYONE can suggest something that works, please please let me know.

I'm not alone!!! The pain and tenderness spreading from my neck to my knees after a night of drinking is unbearable. Nothing alleviates it. Eating worsens it. I can barely wear clothes against my skin. I have never been able to pinpoint any one thing I.e. Wine, beer, or spirits, hydration, the amount consumed.. And, like many of you, it doesn't happen every time I drink. I guess I wish there was some "magic" combination of over-the-counter meds and/or vitamins I could take at the onset.

please read the post from the person that points to the linfatic system, it is from a few months ago. It is indeed the cause, not any myolisys. I have been able to CURE it with medicinal herbs that are aimed at decongesting the system. And it works. I am a normal person again.

I experience the same thing. Hurts my whole body. Neck, back, legs, arms. Only the first drink, usually with in the first 3 sips. It has to be my metabolism, it's like I am not filtering it properly. Could be like how the Asian sinario up too says. I can still drink a lot of alcohol in one night. 9 times put of 10, no hang over. That 1 percent of the time I feel as if I am not getting oxygen to my major organs, like my blood pressure is way too low. I have to lay with my knees to my chest and not move. Can't walk because I will get light headed. It's like my heart doesn't want to beat anymore. That has happened maybe 4 times in 10 years. One time I drank a whole liter of moonshine in one night. I felt better after I s**t and ate..

I have also had this bruising feeling on and off for years. I finally found one real part of the problem.
I wonder if anyone who has commented has immune related disorders, Chrons or celiac disease even heartburn or ulcers that may worsen the leaky gut syndrome?

I am 69 yrs old and have been experiencing this phenomenon for years. I never drink more that 2-3 drinks a night. Sometimes it will be a year before the bruising feeling happens and then is gone the next day. Then one night I may have one drink and the feeling is back the next day! This is a serious problem that doctors seem to be ignoring. We are not alcoholics, just enjoy happy hour, which to me means 1-2 drinks before dinner. Is there any doctor who can answer all these questions??

My professor at UGA studied this in depth with a fellow professor in biology department upon the whole idea of Asian glow you were referring to. There are certain alleles that have been linked to the break down of alcohol and from there to acetaldehyde. If anyone is concerned genetics tests are out there such as 23andMe that can run test for all kinds of genetic disorders and possible health defects.

Yeah I engage in binge drinking quite often in a fraternity in college almost all my Asian brothers camplain way worse about hangovers and get sick much easier. Most fight through it but they have needed medical assistance more than a few time so be careful it's not fun. I will say eating and drinking water before always helps because the alcohol is being processed slower and dehydration side effects won't be a severe when you wake up. My college class studied the alcohol metabolism this year and genetics test are out there if you want to know which ADH2* allelel and ALDH2* allele you posses. Most of the time if you have the right combination or wrong it can completely change the effect of alcohol.

I've got this feeling right now. When I was younger I used to drink fairly heavily and often but never used to have this problem. I find it strange that I've started to have these symptoms now when I only drink once in a blue moon. For me it's pain in and around my waist and my hips. To me it feels like bruising. I'm wondering if the pain is brought on by water retention caused by dehydration after alcohol.

I get it and have never known anybody else who gets it, nor I think it's alcohol myopathy as it happens when I detox, not whilst drinking. I am alcoholic and who tries to be sober, but had recently two relapses. Each lasted a week or more. No bruise feeling whilst drinking. Both times I committed to a detox facility and the bruise feeling started about 16 hours of my last drink, in neck, arms chest, and legs. Gets the worst at about 30 a hours and then starts getting better and dissappear's totally at about hour 30. Doctors gave me no explanation but I'm sure it's something with withdrawal as out of the facility it started at about hour 16 as well but dissappeared if I drank again, like the jitters.

I think I have finally figured this out. I have had this for a few years now and like everyone else have been puzzled/worried about it and unable to find anyone (doctors, other people) who relate or even understand what I'm trying to describe. I had C Diff a few years ago and ever since then my health has not been the same...nothing too bad, just random symptoms that have worsened (asthma & allergies more severe, IBS, and the skin bruising symptom). I noticed that I also get the skin bruising feeling when I overeat, and sure enough there are forums where recovering bulimics discuss the same feeling after a binge. I went to an acupuncturist mainly to address a myriad of symptoms that have been building, including a high high level of stress from my previous job, and she had me do a series of tests including blood, urine, stool, and saliva. What came back that pertains to the skin bruising was that I have trouble with Methylation, a detox function of the body (among other processes it helps with). I also have low cortisol and DHEA, which may explain the lack of adrenaline helping my body to detox post-binge of any sort (even if it's just too much candy!). I have started taking a range of vitamin B supplements, licorice root, and a couple hormone supplements tailored specifically to my needs (this should only be done via testing, never take hormones without a doctors advice). I already feel SO much better and I have not had the skin bruising feeling since I started, despite having to work an event where i had to drink a good amount of wine (I am a food writer....so I can't just give up wine as I sometimes am asked to cover wine festivals/competitions). I am also taking probiotics to help rebuild my gut flora. The gut is no joke...if yours has been messed up in any way, you have taken a lot of steroids or antibiotics, or you are under a severe amount of stress, I would urge you to seek holistic/alternative treatment. The urine test I did was organix, which anyone can order, and the other tests were through a doctor at a lab. It might be as simple as vitamin B deficiency! Good luck everyone.
