Toxins remain in your dna and take time to be released. Things like the steam room will help. I have suffered major tiredness since giving up but I'll deal with the symptom for its far better to feel tired for a couple of months than smoke forever. Good luck all.

I've been smoking heavily for 13 years. I've suffered anaemia throughout my life but the tiredness I'm experiencing now, 9 days quit, I've never experienced before. With anaemia I can't clench my hands and know exactly when I'm suffering lack of iron but giving up the weed has led to my eyes not being able to stay open and I'm constantly shattered. So glad to have found this page as I was getting worried due to everyone saying one of the major symptoms of giving up is insomnia. Good luck to all. I thought I'd never give up. I feel liberated and feel like I'm getting my life back. I'm so excited and hope to stay off this drug for life.

Hi everyone. I have been 13 days clean from smoking weed every day since I was 18 (daily use fluctuated but at the least one blunt per day up to 5). I am now 30 and officially hit my rock bottom a couple months ago sure to personal issues. I continued to use until something clicked in my head 13 days ago and I made the decision that smoking weed has truly hindered my ability to live a happy, fulfilling life. I can attest to the fact that stopping has made me super tired. I go to bed earlier than I have ever in these 12 years and I sleep 7-8 hours each night. Unfortunately my dreams are very intense and I do wake up feeling quite exhausted. It is something I've researched and understand that this is to be expected for up to a month. I am extremely anxious to flush all of the toxins out of my system and see how I feel in another couple weeks of sobriety. Just wanted to share and be another example that this is true. You just have to stick with it, eat right, exercise and believe that you will come out of it. I'm very happy for you all that you stopped, whatever age, whatever you're reasons. I think it's extremely admirable and taking control of your life is not something everyone can do. So, be proud and remind yourself when you get down that this is all a part of the process and it will pass. We're on to bigger and better things!!!

I have quit recently as well and also in 2010 for a year. Both times i felt extremely tired. I can not even make it through a half a day without caffeine or falling asleep. I also have very hard time staying asleep and have irregular sleep time.

Oh YEAH! I quit about 30 days ago because it was making me depressed, groggy and problems with focus, etc ...I smoked daily..some days several times a day..started weaning myself down by using weaker strength Mj over a period of months...then decided I needed to stop completely to reclaim my life & finances. Very tired most of the day...and like you stated...felt like I could fall asleep at any time...(except when it's actually time to sleep)...go figure, right!
Anyway, I'm trying to ride this through...I want to get off all tranquilizers and pain meds...which are prescription for back issues/pain...I want to be totally clean and free of all this $#!t. I am striving for very healthy high nutrient diet(no fast food/junk food). But because I'm so tired most of the time it's difficult to get out for a walk or get things done...but I'm going to have to push myself. Keep striving for your ultimate health...there's a ton of tar in smoking Mj and cigs...so think of how your lungs will love what your doing & preventing COPD which is a lung disease that took Leonard Nimoy. I wish you nothing but the best! Stay with it!

I'm going to add in more Vit C...I think a good multi vitamin and just going for super healthy foods helps too in the long run too...I had some serious digestive problems too when I cut back and had to "fast" and go on liquids only at times. It affects us on so many levels and body systems...not to mention emotionally too. I get easily frustrated and upset...but that's it...I can't go back to using...legally or for medical reasons, I have to say Mj has taken it's toll and she's got to go and stay gone! Just be good to yourself..it's hard to give up any dependency. I've saturated my body with THC and Mj smoke for way too long!

Yes those are the withdrawal symptoms we are generally told to except...but sleeping problems could also be construed as feeling the need to sleep and drop off anytime of the day. Don't forget, Mj stimulates your brain...now you don't have that stimulation/elation. I smoked heavily for years..but cut back as I started to get hit by depression...serious depression. I couldn't handle "cold turkey"...and got "sucked back" into starting again a couple times. Then one day I had to ask myself..."dude are you even enjoying this anymore? Don't you feel bad more than it makes you feel good or high?" So I just didn't refill my prescription if you know what I mean. I also went to Marijuana Anonymous meetings for awhile...but one woman there was so domineering...I had to stop as she made n]me want to go home and light up..lol!
Once you make up your mind to stop...that's it..that is what it takes..and knowing others are experiencing very similar problems to yours. Also it wouldn't hurt to get a health check up and see if there are any underlying issues too.

Yeah I felt jittery and sweated like a pig easily the first couple weeks...many rather iniquitous things & conversations irritated the hell out of me...that might explain the extreme tiredness/sleepiness we feel when we quit...nervousness/irritability is exhausting. I would agree with the person who mentioned that caffeine would only make things worse...I want off all that stuff...including addictive foods & drinks, tranquilizers, pain meds, etc.

Wow! 19 years old and full of...OK...won't say. You sound like you gave up on humanity. We shouldn't care because in the long run we're nothing? Oh I disagree wholeheartedly! People do matter..life does matter...but if you feed negative thoughts like that...you're going to end up "rotting away" and your life counting for naught!
Life is a precious gift and we only want to get out of this dependency we got sucked into and feel life without grogginess, fuzzy thinking and memory problems...why did you post here if you aren't commenting on excessive sleepiness!.

Im glad I found this post because I was getting worried. I was a very heavy Cannibus smoker for years and recently quit. I been sleeping 8-10 hours a night and taking naps whenever I can. I just napped for 3 hours and feel like I need to go to bed again! It's been about a week and the irritability is diminishing but not the sleepiness. Thanks for the replies and post to help my understanding of the problem, Im glad it's not something serious and I can't wait to get ride of these withdrawal symptoms and be done with the lovely Mary Jane, for good this time!

To the guy above... withdrawals are what people go through when detoxing from a drug. So the withdrawals people are experiencing are symptoms of detoxification. So you see that it is all actually linked together. Detoxification is what causes withdrawals. I just wanted to make sure the people reading your post ate not misinformation.

Hello everyone, I don't really feel like posting too much information about myself but instead focus on what will help you through this process. I have read all the posts on this forum and have found them extremely helpful, and I just want to add to that in the shortest way possible for those that are struggling through.


First of all, don't get too down on yourself for being tired, don't feel like it is a waste of time through this period to take the extra time to relax and sleep or chill, just enjoy it because it will pass. You have nothing to worry about, and time is going to heal the issue if you keep the substance out of your system. It depends on your daily use, and how long you have been using it. Could be a week, it could be 3 months, but either way it is all good! Drink plenty of fluids (water obviously), and if you are experiencing the sweats, keep up with drinking some coconut water too so your salts don't get depleted. If they are depleted, water will actually only dehydrate you more. Take vitamin D (not over 2000 iu), omega 3, and a good multivitamin. Take some L-tryptophan, 5-htp and l-theanine to take the edge off if you have headaches, anxiety, etc during the day. You can also take them at night to help you sleep, as well as with melatonin. Don't take the supplements for longer than 3 months, you won't become addicted to these substances but doctors recommend not taking them longer than that. They really help in all forms of detoxing, not just for pot. If your body is able, start a nice workout routine, and don't go too hard. Do some cardio, lift some weights, keep it balanced. If you can play some sports you really love then take the opportunity, spring is upon us right now so it should be pretty easy to get outdoors for hikes and other things like that. If not though, just go for long walks. This will not only help get in some exercise to tire you out for when night comes, but it helps the mind unwind as well, it gives you time to think through whatever you feel like you need to think through. Even if you are not tired, choose a time at night to go to bed, laying there with your eyes closed and not getting to sleep quickly is better than staying awake waiting to feel tired enough. Hit up the sauna, get your sweat on. Remember, the more sweating, the more you need to remember to be replacing those salts. If coconut water is too spendy for you, sports drinks will work as well. Also, don't overdrink the sports drinks/coconut water either, as this will dehydrate your body if you have not been sweating enough. Typically, you only need 20 ounces of a sports drink after an hour of cardio. So you have to be sweating a good deal. I would also recommend counting your calories, so you can ensure you are eating enough. It is important to not let your calories drop too much, because you can experience a lot of symptoms from that as well. It will be different depending on your weight, but 2000 is a pretty standard number to shoot for. If you are a heavier set person, it may be more. It is better right now to eat a little bit more rather than a little bit less, those calories are going to help with your energy even if the food is hard to get down. Sometimes drinking smoothies can help if eating is really difficult, you can chug your calories very quickly and have it done with. If you have a headache, don't feel guilty to have to take an aspirin or ibuprofen/aleve, etc. These symptoms will pass and taking the edge off them will help you through this. Just make sure to be following the recommended doses and don't take the NSAID's many days in a row. Caffeine has different affects for everyone, and if you are already experiencing a lot of anxiety then it may not be the best path, but for those that are just experiencing sleepiness, just counteract it with a caffeine dose. Don't go over the top and drink an energy drink for it, just have something with 50mg or so. It won't eliminate all the sleepiness, but it will help during those crash periods. Also, if you can make it through the day without napping because of the little bits of caffeine, sleeping at night will be easier. Also, drinking the caffeine at least 12 hours before you go to bed is probably a good idea so it doesn't end up also affecting your sleep that night too much. Caffeine takes over 24 hours to completely get out of your system, so if you are finding that it is hurting your sleep at night, cut it out and just deal with being sleepy during the day. Make the accomodations necessary, even if that means taking a nap each day. Make sure to jam out to some music, watch some good movies. For me, I have had a heightened sense for visual and auditory stimulation after quitting. If you feel the same way then definitely go this route. Stimulate yourself by listening to something new, and watching something new as well, not just stuff you have already been listening to for years. The change can be very rewarding and distracting. Remember if you are feeling bored, just go with it! You are making a big change, just chill out and let your body adjust, don't be mad at yourself that it needs to go through this process. There is nothing wrong with being bored on the couch and being sleepy for a while. It is crucial to not feel guilty and down on yourself for taking this time to RELAX. I can not express this enough, your body is making a big change, be gentle and let it do its thing, time is always your homie. Eat as healthy as you can, but don't go over the top and try to make huge dietary changes at the same time as going through this process, biting too much off at one time can make the whole project collapse. Eat healthy, but reward yourself as needed. These things are very individual and only can know what is going to help you keep your head in the game.


Also, just because I haven't read many posts that touched on this thought, I thought I would put it out there. Just because you feel like it's time to take it out of your life doesn't mean that all those years you used it had to be wasted years, wasted dollars. You can still look back to those times with a warm feeling and enjoy the experiences you had, while simultaneously still believe it is time for a new perspective, a new pair of glasses for life. Enjoy the time you spent with the drug, and enjoy the time without it in your future. It doesn't have to be one way or the other. Those years spent with it will give you a different perspective on life once you are through, and the more perspectives we have in our arsenal, the better.

Hi all! It is refreshing to see that I am not alone on this journey. I have been smoking consistently for about 5 years(2-4 bowls a day). I have always been into fitness and eating healthy(work out 4-6 days a week, mostly weight lifting). Had to stop to get a new job and it has been 2 weeks-2days strong. Had no problems letting it go however my motivation and energy are in the dumps. I have to force myself to go to the gym now and am at half power. I sleep long nights and feel I can take a nap at any point in the day even after coffee and food. My sex drive is down and its worst when I don't eat carbs (dropping weight for summer) and I feel very irritable and on edge with everyone and everything. Just want to be left alone and sleep. After learning thc is storred in fat cells I attribute this lack of energy to me losing weight and my body releasing thc back into my blood stream. Going to stick with it though and am happy I came across this message board to see I wasn't alone. And for anyone wondering I took a wal-mart pee test(believe the brand was "Reli-" something about $13) and it came back positive on the 2 week mark. I was discouraged but realized I had taken it in the morning after I had slept all night. I was 100% confident I would pass but discouraged I didn't. I then tried the "flushing" method and just drank a ton of water, coffee, b complex vitamins and took the test 2 days later at noon. Came back negative(yay!)but the line was very feint. Have the actual pee test in about 3 days so we will see what happens.
