Greetings, fellow suffers. My mucous problem started immediately after thyroid surgery. I believe that the lining of my trachea was injured by the intubation, confirmed by the fact that I coughed up large blood clots for the first three or four days after the surgery. The mucous started immediately after surgery, in the recovery room, and hasn't gotten any better in the 8 months since my operation. I went to an ENT who told me I had post-nasal drip. No way! This is something completely different, but I couldn't convince them otherwise. Several other doctors said that I need to drink more water to thin down the mucous. Not a very satisfactory answer, either.

My subsequent reading and research have shown that this thick mucous is a common occurrence after the throat lining has suffered an injury or major irritation. I have not stumbled upon a cure yet, but knowing the cause must certainly be the first step. I wonder how many of those who have this condition had surgery just before it started. Those who did not have surgery almost certainly have some other type of throat-lining irritation going on, such as an allergy, or perhaps a chronic bacterial infection. Think about when it started, or what aggravates it. Then you may be better able to treat it.

For eight months I have chronic mucus. I hack all day and clear my throat every ten seconds. It is taking its toll. I’m a musician and singer and I can no longer sing in the studio. Been to many doctors had chest X-rays two of them. They just try to treat the symptoms with no luck absolutely nothing helps

I think you may be on to something, I took the oral medication for toenail fungus as well, that's when my problems got so bad! I wonder if anyone has studied the correlation between the two? Perhaps others who have written in have taken the same Rx?

Sounds like candida overgrowth which can be exasperated from the use of antibiotics. I had very similar symptoms and finally saw a naturopath after doctors couldn't figure it out. I had candida (yeast) overgrowth in my body. Had to go on a candida diet (no sugars, grains, dairy, yeast or fruit) and do multiple candida cleanses over a course of 5 years and I still can't eat those goods or it comes back. Research candida overgrowth and candida spit test.. then candida diet and cleanses. It's important to get it treated because it can lead to more serious health problems like cancer.

Too much mucous in my throat all the time, nothing helps! Why do I keep having to hack chunky stuff up? It is all the time, nothing helps. Been at it for years and been on sprays, antibiotics, and allergy pills. What should I do?

I have also noticed for myself, that if I relax and get my mind off of that sticky feeling in the top back of my throat, that it does seem to recede. Not easy to do, but giving it attention does seem to keep it around a little longer. Mine started as an evening thing, usually half and hour, and I'd drink water to relief it. Now it's all the time on and off. I have a steroid nasal spray i'm suppose to use for six weeks, just started yesterday, and really hope it solves this issue. There is also a mix of anxiety and swallowing phobia going on that cropped up in the past few months, before this started, so it might be a little complex. Hopefully one thing cured, will calm the others.
