What happened with this? I'm just curious cause I've had two UTI's in a month and I've had multiple menstrual cycles as well. Some with heavy bleeding. And I've had my IUD Mirena for a little over four years now.

I've been having Uti s after sex for a few years - a while after the birth of my youngest. It's just clicked with me that I had the coil put in a year after he was born. I've been fairly constipated and I think my heavy colon has been lying on my bladder causing it not to empty properly and allowing bacteria to grow. I've been relying on dmannose powder to cure and prevent UTI s. I was recently recommended to take aloe Vera gel to help my colon. I haven't had even as hint of infection since. Stunned to think the coil may have caused all of this.

P.s. the aloe Vera makes me more regular - maybe twice a day when I drink plenty of water.

It's so great to find this site and feel like I'm getting some answers! Like many women who posted, I had a Mirena for 5 years with no significant problems following the birth of my second child. I had a second one put in a few years ago. I have been experiencing chronic UTI's now with low-grade symptoms in between. I have a history of UTI's but nothing like this. I finished a round of antibiotics, went in to my MD and tested and she said I do not have a UTI even though I felt the symptoms return. My gyn said that the string has disappeared up into my uterus, so removing the IUD will be more complicated. But I am definitely taking it out! I have also been bloated, tired and moody. At 43 I'm not looking forward to my periods returning, but will gladly take those over these symptoms any day! As many women have said it is infuriating that my medical doctor did not pick up on this! She told me to drink a lot of water to make the UTI go away on its own! Which would just lead to a kidney infection. That's just crazy!
I have been careful to pee following intercourse and shower beforehand to avoid bacteria getting in. I am a DES-exposed daughter and I've read that some of these women may have irregularly shaped uteruses and the differences in anatomy in that region can make it easier for bacteria to enter the urethra. However this is a whole new level of recurring UTIs that cannot be explained by anything but the Mirena. Thank you for your posts, ladies! I hope you have found some relief from this situation!

Do you just get the uti pain when you pee randomly? Because that's what I have. I've been having problem for the past month.. And tonight I can't feel my strings. I'm seeing the doctor on Friday but it still scares me any advice?

No mine was more of a constant, mild pressure/discomfort on my bladder. Although it was uncomfortable to pee as well. I'm sorry to hear you're having pain! :( I went in and had my Mirena removed a few days ago. My doctor numbed my cervix and I had some cramping but it was okay. Not horrible. At this point I'm a little sore and am having some mild cramping. But I feel the pressure on my bladder is gone. It's very strange. I definitely feel better, and it's not just from the antibiotics (because I would continue to have symptoms even when I finished them). My doctor didn't say much when I explained my rationale to have it removed. I could tell she wasn't quite in agreement with my beliefs. But she took it out and helped me to explore other birth control options. She seems to think the best choices for me would either be the pill or the NuvaRing. I've pretty much ruled out the NuvaRing because I don't like the idea of anything inside of me that could be harboring bacteria and causing infection. I had problems with the diaphragm causing UTI's in the past.

I am shocked to see 13 pages and over 180 posts about this... I have had my paragard IUD for less than 2 years - never had any problems with UTI before it and big surprise - I have had over 6 cases of UTI since the iud devise was inserted. I am on the D mannose supplement all the time, always have bottles of cranberry juice in my pantry and also over the counters pain medicine for UTI :( not to mention that every single time after sex I have to jump out of bed and run to the bathroom to make sure I pee so it will reduce the risk of another UTI. I have 7 days long heavy periods, and constant back pain. Enough with this. I am glad to have found this page and I did read through many of the posts. I am having the iud removed next week. I am almost 40 and will try the diaphragm or in the worst case I may have to go on the pill again. It cannot be worst than constant infections.

I've been seeing urologist and nephrologist for recurrent Uti. On constant courses of antibiotics. Never thought it could be my mirena causing it.

Well my friends, I had mine taken out after 9 years. Copper IUD.
2 YEARS of chronic UTI/Yeast/BV infections. (period, two weeks later one of the three infections, two weeks later period) I never had a break. I had a physician tell me i needed psychiatric help. REALLY, because I want an infection???? Found a gynecologist/urologist and he took the IUD out the first visit. No questions asked. Its been a year now and happy to report NO infections. GET IT OUT!!!!!

I got an IUD inserted about 5 months ago. I had no real problems with it until 2 months ago when I started getting severely painful UTI's. I went to the doctor to see what the problem was and she said that it wasn't from the IUD, so she prescribed me antibiotics. Of course it only helped for a little bit, and made it worse by adding yeast with it too. Now that I have found this page I know for sure what the cause is and I am making an appointment to get it removed as soon as possible. I am amazed that this is so common yet doctors aren't warning people with this. If you are looking for a birth control I highly recommend not using any type of IUD.

I just had to go to urgent care yesterday with back pain, 103 temp and 120 heart rate and get major antibiotics. Ive had my IUD for 8 months and have struggled ever since with utis and Ive never had one before. IMPORTANT QUESTION: Has anyone who had infections from an IUD who then got it removed, had trouble getting pregnant? That is my worst fear..

I would just like to share my story here so that other women can see it and know what to do when this happens. I had mirena put in about a month or two ago, and had almost no problems. Fast forward to last week, I started experiencing what I thought was the beginning stages of a UTI. I have a history of chronic UTI's so I thought I knew exactly what was going on. I went on antibiotics and my symptoms subsided for a day or two. Then, I started to experience extreme urgency, I felt like I constantly had a full bladder but was unable to void at all. It became so painful that I ended up going to my nearest ER so they could do a bladder ultrasound on me. Everything looked normal, and my UTI test came back negative, so nobody was able to tell me what was wrong. They eventually sent a OB/GYN down to come talk to me, which is when I asked her if my IUD could be causing this problem. She told me that there was no chance, and that in all her years of studying the female anatomy has she heard of this issue caused by an IUD. I then looked up this page along with a few others, where I read women's stories of experiencing this urgency, which I then realized was the result of a bladder spasm. After spending all day in the ER, I saw another OB/GYN who though she had never heard of this problem, took my word for it and removed my IUD. I felt almost instant relief, and after about four days IUD free I am 100% better. Moral of the story: DO NOT LISTEN IF A DOCTOR TELLS YOU THESE SYMPTOMS ARE UNRELATED TO YOUR IUD. They most definitely are. It happened to me and it can happen to other women as well, I just want to make sure people are aware.

I got my Mirena over a year ago and I have been getting UTI's and yeast infections non stop.
It seems every time I have intercourse I get a UTI or yeast infection. I am aware of thimgs to help prevent them su h as going pee after sex, eyc. Antibiotics dont seem to help since its a vicious cyle. Get rid of the uti and then i get a yeast infection from the antibiotocs. I'll be seeing my doctor again to discuss different options.

I have something to confess! I was absolutely convinced that my Mirena was causing my frequent (every 1.5 months) UTI's. I posted earlier about it on this site about this too. I went to the sexual health clinic and demanded to get it out 'because it was causing my UTIs'. The nurse said no, we try other things first. She asked that when my partner and I have sex to ensure he doesn't rub other areas down there. Sure enough, I havent had a problem since.

So, ensuring my partner was a perfect aim during sex has stopped my UTI's. I'm not saying this is the solution to everyone's problem but it might be another avenue to try!

HI everyone. I have had the PARAGAURD IUD now for 2 years. 6 months after getting it I got the worst UTI of my life which lasted a tormenting 3 days...and then turned into Bacterial Vaginosis.... Which makes your vagina smell like apple cyder vinegar.. It's horrifying. That lasted for 6 months and is still somewhat present after sex or during my period. So just 5 days ago I got another UTI...got rid of it...and then it surfaced again today. I'm about ready to blow my head off. I can't take this pain anymore. IUD'S SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have to get this removed. Anyone have any recommendations as far as preventative options on the men's side? Like a temp fix? Thanks
