Hey everybody,
I've been having the same problem. i had a cold sore about a month and a half ago on my upper lip and it left, then about a week or two after it left, i got another one! i put Blistex, the medicated one for cold sores (it has a white outside) and i also put it on my other one and i think thats what made me get scars. Everytime i got a cold sore, i never passed anything on it and it left on its own with no scars. but then i started passing Neosporin on the second one and it helped the cold sore leave faster but i still have a scar on my upper and lower lip but they're barely noticeable. I really hope they leave. My advice for the people who is gona get laser surgery, DONT get it. I also know someone who tried the laser and it got worse, and above the other people even said it got worse. Good luck everyone! :]

I used to dry my sores out as quick as possible with peroxide or whatever I could. In retrospect I think that was the worst treatment. It left scars. Lips are skin and like any other area of skin if you want to minimize scarring you moisturize and keep away from sun. Here is my cold sore treatment. It lasts about a week but is not very noticeable, and it looks like it not only prevented more scarring but because my last sore was in the same spot as the one before, it seems to have faded the old scarring : ) Try it:
-1 Lysine tablet a day (only when you have a sore otherwise it won't be as effective when you do.)
-Pop open vitamin E gel capsules and mix with honey (1 capsule to 1 drop honey) apply to lips for an hour or so
-Use just the vitamin E at other times (poke a whole in one end and squeeze it on)
-Ice it once or twice a day for the first 2 or 3 days
-Apply original Neosporin ointment just to the sore starting day 2 or 3 (vitamin E on the rest of the lips)
-Use Neosporin Lip Health overnight renewal therapy before bed

You may notice the dead skin coming off after icing, just be gently wiping it away. Don't ever pick or peel any skin away unless it's about to come off on its own. You want to keep as much skin from peeling off as possible. Also don't use the regular neosporin if you're going to be eating soon as you really should try to avoid ingesting it. Continue the vitamin E and neosporin for a while after the sore is gone to really help the scarring. It seems like a complicated treatment but it's not. And it's inexpensive (Vitamin E capsules around $7/bottle, Lysine tablets $5/bottle, neosprin $4-$5.) Everything can be purchased at Target or similar store. Use Advil in the first few days if it's swollen or hurting. With this treatment pain was minimal and gone after day 3 for me. Avoid chapped lips and sunlight (use spf30 chapstick) to minimize outbreaks.

... not sure if I had a cold sore or what it was but it left a scar as well. That was 10 years ago when I was 15. It also did a number on my self esteem, but you eventually learn how to deal with it. It is just a scar, but how it affected me! I dont want to have any surgery to it, especially now, because lips are sensetive area and it might get worse. Right now I just accept it and it is easier. Sometimes though it doesnt bother me at all and I forget about it, sometimes it looks bigger to me and stands out more, it is quite strange what we do to ourselves sometimes...

i am having a massive cold sore breakout. i have them all over my face. like 5 on my forehead, one on top eyelid, one on lower eyelid, two on nose, a ton of small ones scattered around my mouth, and tiny-hard-to-see ones on my lips. have no idea why i just suddenly got soooo much of these freekin things. i wasn't even sure they were cold-sores, because most aren't even on my lips, and they sure didn't start there. but now, i think they really are. New ones pop up, faster than the old ones can heal. But the ones that are healing (around my mouth) seem to be scarring my face. One's left this like dark barely noticable mark. others have left pinkish bruise-like marks. im seriously afraid if these will scar my face. i have so much that if they do, it's gonna look like i have a mustache. and, i mean, who likes scars anyway? ughgh, this is really concerning me. i may have had one or two cold-sores before, but never so much. i am putting aloe-vera on them because after researching, it seems like it could help the cold-sores heal and minimize scars. i really hope this skin problem will pass with no scars as a remembrance of it. makes me so embarrased... :$ making me sad :'(

w/ hope & strength,

hey, I had the same issue five years ago. It does heal. It lightens and lightens slowly but about a year ago it finally finished. I used cucumber natural lip gchap but it goes on like gloss. And I washed my face with extant regularly. Also pinching that area to promote bloodflow. My dermatologist recommended this. Goodluck!!

Hey, Lambo again. I'm sorry for the post I did. I was seriously stressed bout my skin. I went to a doctor because I had one like nearly in my eye, and it was a bit scary.. haha. even though I thought it was a cold sore, it wasn't, there were so much all over my face, and barely on my lips. truthfully, not sure what happened to my face, the doctor wasn't very clear. but I took some antibiotics, and the skin problem basically vanished. Afterwards, I still had some popouts of the weird red bumps, but now, my skin's pretty clear, with an occasional pimple, and whatnot. I had some scars but they're gone now. I just wanted to update on the situation cuz I don't want anyone to get the condition I had with cold sores confused. sorry about the misinformation. Best of luck to everyone. :-)

I have the same problem. I've only ever had one outbreak, but it left me with a large red area on my upper lip. It is sensitive to everything. Sweat, food, toothpaste, I try to keep it clean but no amount of special treatment seems to be enough. I've had it for a year now, and there's no sign of getting better, I've seen two dermatologists who could offer me no help.

HSV-1 is very common, but what is not common is to permanently have the mark of infection on your face. It feels really bad to be around people with this. It has made my life significantly worse.
