I've had cold sores come and go over the years but when I'm stressed and really tired I find they are more apt to appear. I've tried Abreva and a couple other home remedies but they don't work. My sister recommended I try a product called, Zyderma. It uses silver to help kill bacteria on the skin. I've been using it everyday as part of my cleansing regimen and I love it! Lately I've been crazy tired and sick. I could feel a sore coming on so I added extra Zyderma cream to the corners of my mouth. I never did get one! I dunno if it's a fluke but since I've been using the product I haven't gotten a cold sore. I dunno guys but this may be worth checking out. www.zyderma.com

Hello all my fellow coldsore sufferers. I am a male and have been getting them since i was about 13 years old. I recently found a regime that seems to work well for me.
Go to Walmart and buy a bottle of Oil of Oregano. Quite expensive (about $35) for a small 13ml dropper bottle, but it will last about a year. When u feel yourself gettin a cold sore take the dropper and drop about 4 drops onto a Qtip and rub it all over your lips and make sure your lips are properly coated. If a sore does manage to break out then take an ice cube and put it in a papertowel and rub the ice cube directly onto the spot of the breakout, make sure there is direct contact between the cube and your lip. When the cube has melted, pat it dry and put on more Oil of Oregano.
I also take the Oil of Oregano orally. I place about 4 drops under my tongue and let it dissolve and swallow. Caution! It tastes soo bad, but is supposed to help your immune system. See, oil of oregano is anti-viral so it helps with the breakout which is caused by a virus.
I also use Lysine tablets. I take about 1000mg twice a day, and if the breakout goes even further then i open a capsule and take the powder from within and rub it on the breakout, this helps to dry it out.
I have gotten my breakouts down to once a year, and from the first bubbling up to when the scab comes off had been about 1 week. Hope this helps.
PS. When it forms into the scar, do not touch it, keep it clean with cotton swabs dipped in vinegar or alcohol and put Polysporin on it frequently. This keeps the scar moist and avoids the scar drying and pulling the skin.
Hey, can you please elaborate as this really seems to be a good idea having tried every frikin product out there that all proved to be worthless and quite afraid to resort to laser treatment. Thank you sooooo much!
My mom is a nurse practitioner and our whole family suffers from cold sores. We usually do take Lysine supplement to help shorten the duration, and sometimes even prevent cold sore. I try to take one every day.
I know that my triggers are stress and sunlight expose and high altitude. The one think I've found that has worked for me it take 2 grams of Acyclovir (Valtrex) -an antiviral medication for herpes as SOON as I feel a tingle. I've had to do this a few times this year and it's the first thing I've ever done that has actually helped STOP the cold sore from getting to the blister stage. Since the cold sore usually appears in the same place everytime, I too have a small scar area from getting cold sores my whole life. I usually get 1-2 a year and I really like my lips, so it is a total bummer to feel like your lips look weird. I have not found anything to help the scar other than trying to prevent cold sores.
I'm still using Zyderma and it's working really well. I find too that is some dark discolouring of my skin... same happens with my acne... which I also use the cream on... so great! The darkness fades really quickly because the silver in the cream keeps working on the bacteria. I think part of the reason I like it best is because it's a natural product and it's gentle on my skin. Has anyone else tried it yet?
