I too am experiencing the problem of constantly smelling exhaust fumes. I have had this happen once before, and I think I know what might have triggered this reaction (at least for me). Prolonged exposure to intense aromas. In the past when I experienced this I had a Glade Plugin fan device plugged in next to my bed. The problem is back now as was the plugin. I use these alot but normally do not keep them plugged in continuously. Please respond to this post if you have experienced these symptoms and were exposed to intense smells for a prolonged time.
Two years ago, I experienced smelling ammonia in the am hours. I asked nurses and doctors and no one heard of this symptom. During this time. I developed frequent urination and nausea with weight loss related to excessive fluid loss. One day I became lethargic and admitted with a dx of Insulin dependent diabetic. I do believe the ammonia smell is related to my kidney function at the time and diabetes blood sugar level > 400. Once I started on diabetic treatment I have not had the ammonia smell again.
My sister is now experiencing an ammonia smell and I never mention this symptom to her. I instructed her to have her Blood glucose level and kidney function test done asap. I hope this helps.

I also have been smelling fumes at home and at work. Trying to figure out what it is. One guest said that they were going to try to exercises maybe that would help. I exercise daily and that does not stop the smell of fumes. Recently I painted my moms interior 2 weeks ago. Then last week i went back for some touch ups. Then yesterday, I painted the entry door from the garage to the house. No one at work smells any fumes, I work for the processing postal center and we have lots of machines running. The building maintenance guy tested the building and found nothing. This smell started 2 weeks ago. Maybe the fumes of the paint is still lingering in my nose. So if anyone has done some recent painting maybe this is causing us to have this smell of fumes.
I think this phenomenon is due to increased break down of nitrates in the body and the nose has chemoreceptors which detect minute levels of ammonia-like compounds in the blood. Keep in mind the nasal cavity contains many blood vessels and the chemicals which bind to the hairs are almost directly converted to electric signals in the olfactory bulb which is in the brain. Nitrate catabolism can be caused by many different ailments, I would suggest getting tests done seeing as high levels can lead to diseases, even death, or may be sign of a psychiatric condition such as epilepsy. Not something to mess around with.
I have this same thing with a mint smell and slight taste. I had it a few years ago, had an MRI and CT which found nothing. It eventually went away. Two weeks ago it came back hardcore and it is driving me nuts. It's like I have always just finished eating Thin Mints or Mystic Mint cookies.
I don't believe my smells were cause by prolonged odors but now I cannot stand to be around prolonged orders (such as plug ins, dryer sheets, perfumes) I've worn perfume my entire life and love fresh smelling things like carpet power, dryer sheets, and air fresheners.
I get a heavy to moderate exhaust fumes smell in my nose probably once a month. I thought maybe last month it was associate with my period.. (no idea how but I'm at a loss here) But the smell has been here for 3 days and no period yet - scratch that idea)
My first experience was while I was pregnant... I chalked it up to the super human pregnany lady nose... but the smell just keeps coming back. Anyone else looked up Clairalience?
Clairalience is an alleged psi phenomenon, usually described as a type of clairsentience.
Clairalience is the apparent smelling of odors and scents beyond the usual range of human perception.

I believe the smell is being caused by high uric acid in the body,as i get these smells when i have a case of gout. One of the symptoms of gout is ammonia according to wikepedia,i dont understand it,but maybe someone who understands chemistry or health issues better might be able to shed some light on the subject.
I have had flu like symptoms 3 times after drinking 1 beer, i can normally drink 6-10 with no sickness the next day,but i felt worse and worse i went to the doctor and got a antibotic 3 times,a ct scan with dye etc and all is well i felt better in a few days i noticed that ive had gout and the smell of ammonia since, ive been researching today and when i plug in beer and flu i get candida yeast overgrowth with acetaldehyde as a player in this condition.Yeast overgrowth is definetly at least a player in my sickness and smells
Im starting to get very freaked out. I started having a terrible smell in my nose, like rotting meat and now the smell of vinegar. It truely is horrible and seemed to start when I suddenly lost the hearing in my right ear. As yet, doctors have no idea why I have lost my hearing and, yet, have all kinds of noise 24/7 in my right ear, as well as sore throats, unexplained fevers, swollen glands. Two rounds of antibiotics and nothing has worked and its been 5 weeks now. The dizziness from the loss of hearing and balance and the constant changing pressure in both ears now has me very scared. I work in an extremely high stress job where I have to have above excellent hearing and this is about to cost me my job. I was fine before I woke up on June 11, 2009 and now everything has changed. Oh, and did I mention the pain? Yeah, not to fun. Anyone ever have this or know what it could be? Thanks in advance.
Seems like we're all experiencing similar symptoms, but no one can say if the symptoms are caused by various different illnesses or if they have one underlying cause. My own experience is this: About two years ago I noticed I was smelling bread all the time; this was after I'd noticed the smell when I was breaking up bread for the birds. The smell was constant for a few days, but then went away. I had no health issues at the time, other than the chronic but mild sinusitis that I have all the time.
Then last Christmas I could smell Germolene all the time; my husband had been using it, but I could smell it constantly long after he'd stopped. It was so annoying, even though it's normally a smell I quite like. I then took the flu and was pretty ill; when I was well enough to eat everything tasted strange (this actually happened in the few days before I came down with the flu too). I had to take antibiotics for my sinusitis after the flu and eventually the smell and the strange taste went away. I assumed it was the combination of flu and sinusitis that had caused it and the antibiotics that had cured it.
But about a month or so ago I noticed that water was beginning to smell strange to me, with a strong metallic odour that I thought might be chlorine. Every time I went near the kitchen sink the smell was overpowering, to the extent that I began to think there was something wrong with the drains. I get my husband to check out all the pipes and the drains; there was nothing there, but he disinfected them anyway. Incidentally, he could smell nothing untoward at all. I still have this strong smell, especially when near water but also on my skin, particularly my hands. I assumed the skin smell was down to the water I wash my hands in, but even using perfumed hand cream doesn't help, or at least only for a few minutes; five minutes after putting it on the metallic smell comes back and is stronger than the hand cream perfume.
So, what is it? I don't know. I began to worry about brain tumour - naturally! - and after having a brief episode of difficulty in focusing my eyes I had my eyes checked out to see if I had any optic nerve swelling, but no, all was fine. I still have chronic sinusitis and assume it may be causing the smell symptoms, but am not sure if I should try antibiotics again. I've read that many sinus infections are actually caused by fungus rather than germs and if this is the case then antibiotics could potentially make things worse.
I'm in good health otherwise, though have had some aches and pains in muscles and ligaments recently. I read about fibromyalgia and how it can cause a heightened sense of smell, which is what my problem might be. It's almost as though I can smell something (chlorine?) in the water that others can't, especially as the smell gets much stronger when I go near the sink or turn on the water. This doesn't just happen in my house; it also happens in my mother's, yet she can smell nothing strange at all.
Sorry for such a long post, but I thought I'd detail my history of strange smells, just to see if any of this strikes a chord with anyone else. Something that comes and goes over a period of months or in my case a couple of years must have a cause of some kind. I'm going to do more research online and if I find anything of interest I'll post it here. Otherwise I think I'll have to consult my doctor and see what he thinks, especially about whether this could be linked to chronic sinusitis.
I'll be very interested to read more of other people's experiences. We may yet hit on something common to us all.

Hello,
I am 24, male and have been experiencing the smell of Ammonia for over 10 years now. Normally in episodes that last about 20 seconds to a few minutes, never longer.
The smell is extremely pungent! I normally sense it only in my nose, but as of recent the "sensation" moved up my nose, past the inside of my right eye, over the front of my head and pulsates intensely around the back-top of my head causing irritating pain in the area, before fading away.
This is vary rare though, till now it has just stayed in my nose and manifested as an unforgiving Ammonia smell that makes me cringe and grimace.
My Medical History:
- Had epilepsy when i was around 8 including several seizures.
- Have experienced quite a few concussions
- Recently was physically ill and mentally set back and lost about 9 kilos, mostly muscle mass because i have extremely low body fat. (think ripped martial artist)
*I have noticed that the smell has a higher chance of manifesting in environments with very dry air; ie: Air Conditioned rooms
So far, based on what i have read here., i am ruling out Epilepsy, i have not had any sort of epileptic symptoms since age 8.
I am also ruling out the possibility that the Ammonia smells is caused by excessive catabolic activity with a low simple/complex glucose intake, because as i said i have had this for years. If i hadn't i would attribute it to my recent dramatic loss of weight in which case it would make sense, but that would not apply for the years before in which my diet was stable.
In other words i'm back to square 0 with solving this problem through Western science.
Eastern medicine ? - Kidney problems? - Possibly.
My recommendations are, to regulate your water intake; increase/reduce etc. make sure you're drinking at least 2 to 5 liters of water per day depending on your body mass and physical activity, 2-3 liters is normal for most people and (4-5) if you're a big person who does a lot of physical work.
If you have regular episodes, enough that you can keep track of them (mine are very spaced and i can never recall the last one) - put your sex activities on hold for a month (unless it causes problems in your relationship) and find 30 mins a day once in the morning at lunch and evening to just sit down and relax without any disruptions. (Thats 3 x 30mins)
I hope doctors figure out what this is all about, my occurrences are rare, but still damned annoying and when they hit they hit hard, the Ammonia smell is so potent it almost feels like its burning.
Good luck to all X_X

I'm 38, female... just noticed this ammonia smell about 3 weeks ago. It was so powerful that I dragged my kids out of the house because I thought we had a chemical leaking somewhere -- but no one could smell it but me. It's very strong, but over very quickly. I do not taste it - just experience the smell in my house. I, too, seem to smell it mostly when around water... in the kitchen, in the shower.
I'm also experiencing considerable hair loss. Handfuls of hair. I have chronic anemia, so thought that was the culprit and that I was just bonkers over the ammonia smell.
I don't mind going to the doctor - but it sounds like most of you have gone for one reason or the other and never get any real answers... and why do some of us smell and taste it and others not? Why do some say it's exaust and some an ammonia/acidy smell (don't forget the mint!) What on earth IS this?

I am 25, male, with a history of sinus infections and a family history of diabetes. Maybe once or twice a year I'll get a strange smell in my nose/mouth that other people can't detect on my breath. It is similar to acetone (nail polish). I am athletic and an active person. There are a number of things it could be, but most likely has some link to acidosis, keto acidosis, diabetic complications, kidney issues, sinus infection, dental infection, or it could be a minor issue due to exercise and lack of hydration.
But, I just got over a cold (still recovering a bit) that was just sinus blockage pressure and I now have this acetone smell again and a little bit of jaw pain and pain in my rear teeth. So, it definitely sounds like a sinus issue or dental issue, unless I'm having massive kidney failure (which I doubt).
I haven't been tested for diabetes, though.

I have the odor in my nose, in my nails, in my urine. My friend told me it's a good sign of dehydration. Drink lots of water. Dosing up on vitamins and water intake has helped.
I am 33, female, type 2 diabetes, bulimia, major depression and anxiety disorder, ADD and memory loss. I have had this ammonia, alcohol, metal, acetone taste in my mouth, off and on, for a months or weeks now. At first it was from my hair color, because it certainly smells a lot like it. It went away days later. Then I bought these new air freshener for our home and I quickly switched the generic back to the brand name of that automatic air freshener dispenser (I can't remember the name right now), thinking that the generic one had more alcohol than fragrance. I even asked my kids if the generic brand air freshener gave them headaches too and if they can taste it. They know mommy is a little crazy, lol, they said they didn't notice much difference.
Then at night time, I would get it, I would think I was tasting my medications, or were having indigestion or not having anything in my stomach. I am the type of person who research symptoms right away. But I truly believed that this awful taste and smell was just physical, until I remembered to Google it today.
I am very surprised that so many people are having the same issue. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs. But I do have some emotional and mental issues. I just want to share my experience just in case some medical experts decide to study this issue. I am definitely going to get my liver tested now. I thought that because I never drank alcohol in my life, my liver will be safe.
I hope medical experts do a study or research on this soon.
