Well, I did the Fungicide, and the smell was still there. Finally went in for the MRI to see if it was neuroloical. Turns out it isn't. Brain looks good. So, my doctor officially told me that this is simply one of those unexplained phenomenom, and there is nothing that can be done about it. It may come and go over the years, but there are simply no answers. For me, case closed.

Occasionally when I am getting a cold, the first symptom is a smell of ammonia in my nostrils, then the runny nose starts. Weird!

I know you mean well but the variety of issues on this thread beg to differ(hard to lump all this into those two conditions).

I too have occasionally experienced sensations of smelling something like ammonia or exhaust for the last few months. The sensation only lasts a few seconds to 20-30 seconds. No one has experienced these sensations when I have. I immediately drink water or eat a small snack like crackers when I recognize the anomaly and the smell sensation goes away quickly. Hopefully someone can pose a more plausible explanation for what is ailing us.

Could it be ketosis? Check out the low-carb forums and the body-building forums. If you're eating extremely low-carb or working out a lot, you could be in ketosis.

I have been having this problem for years but it didnt start out with the nose.. 5 years ago when ever i started sweating it would bleach my shirt around the armpit area and then my underwear. i had to get rid of many things because of this. then all of a sudden the bleaching stopped and my nose would run and whatever came out of my nose litterally burned my skin and i would get scabs. i would put baby butt cream around my nose and it would go away quicker but then when it started running i would smell something close to ammonia especially when i am in the shower. i have heard of the liver problems and not sure if this has anything to do with it.. years ago i was addicted to pain pills and took quite a few of them but i am clean now but i do drink once in a while... just last week the inside of my nose hurt so bad and was swollen on the inside so bad i couldnt breathe out of that side. kinda felt like a spider bite and would bleed and its very sensitive.. the bump is going down but the acid ( i think thats what it is) is burning all other parts of my nose and it just wont stop.... somebody please help... i am going to the doctors on monday and hopefully figure this thing out.. if i get answers i will let everybody know....

This morning at work, I had a real tightness in my chest which I then ended up feeling in my back. My throat also felt a weird tightness. It lasted about 10 minutes and was a bit scarey. After it seemed to go away, I notice a vinegar smell. Nobody else could smell the vinegar smell. I left the room a bit later and when I returned to the room I smelled the vinegar smell all over again. Then when I got to a restaurant for lunch noticed the same smell. Then got home and have been noticing the same smell at various times. I have no idea what this is about. I am very happy to read all of your comments. I will continue to watch for more comments and will pass on info if I learn anything important and sensible.

I get this sometimes when I exercise. I have read that it is a sign of ketosis. . .it's a by-product of your body burning fat instead of glucose. So if anyone is experiencing this on a low carb diet. . .that's what it is and what it is in my case. HTH

I would get a whiff of ammonia every once in awhile, even though there was no source of ammonia around.  The odor would only last for a second or two. I just started working in an environment where ammonia is frequently used. I have now limited my exposure to ammonia and find that I now rarely smell the ammonia at home and the intensity is very much diminished if I do smell it. My smelling of the ammonia was also related the activity I was doing (e.g. after a shower, driving in car, laying on the couch, etc.).  I think my smelling of ammonia at home may have been due to a short term exposure to ammonia, which lasted a few weeks. Any comments?

i recently went in for a root canal and now i have this ammonia smell in my sinus. i think your absolutely right with the connection between the dental work and smell because it smells like the infection i had in my root canal before i went to the dentist. i have a light yellow mucus drip that smells when is discharged from nose... not my mouth, only my nose.

I went into someones house the other day and was there about 30 mins, we also walked out into her closed off sun room that smelled very musty. When i got into my car to leave i had the smell of ammonia in my nose, it lasted about 5 mins. But ever since my sinus have bothered me and eyes burning, that has been about 3 days ago.

Some say bread smell, and that would be yeast. I would say it's a yeasty, dieselly smell, before I read these. Burnt diesel? Hard to put a certain smell to it, but someone said ammonia and you could say it's tends to that kind of a smell too. It's not a nice smell, that's the problem, and why we search to find out what it could be.

My wife did a search on Dr Oz's website to help me out, and something interesting came up. It said when your liver can't get rid of the ammonia poisons it's used to doing, kinda fills up, then the lungs have to take over and exhale the ammonia through the mouth/nose. That makes sense, but some here have had their liver was tested and found it to not be the culprit.

I've been pretty healthy, on no meds, but have these smell problems for a few months now. Not knock-over bad, but unrelenting and it makes enjoying a meal impossible as everything is tainted with the smell. Don't think it's stress, as I don't, and it's there after waking up, you don't stress while getting a nice night of rest, and I do.

I did have a tooth problem a few months prior, and had it checked out and I needed a root canal, my first, and that did not help with the smell- yet. A different doctor (holistic) said it could still be an infection under the tooth (bottom level, rear) and ordered an x-ray by a holistic dentist. That will be in two weeks.  Heard the infections from finished root canals can be very problematic, that infections can still remain!!?

What can you say, our bodies are "wonderfully and fearfully made" (King David- Psalm 139:14), thank U Lord.  Praying like crazy to solve this dilemma, for you folks too.

I have been also getting the smell of Chlorine in my breath for the last few days and disturbed over the reason for the same... May be it is due to some allergy or dehydration as mentioned here above. I am drinking water to compensate
