Not sure if this is still a live thread, but: Try changing out your deoderant or toothpaste. Especially if doctor cannot find problem. I think the way deoderant mixes with your body chemistry, esp if you are taking drugs, can cause a difference in what you smell around you. It could be YOU.

I'm not sure if this thread is still live either but had to comment. I just had that clorine smell again a couple hours ago,,it lasted for about 20-30 seconds. I was very stressed earlier and had symtoms of my high blood pressure going up,,buzzy dizzy feeling. I'm not sure if it's related. I don't have the clorine smell regularyly at all,,months inbetween sometimes so I'm pretty sure mine is not related to sinus infection. I'm newly diabetic so will have to mention to specialist at appt next month,,my liver levels are still high and I read on this thread that sometimes it causes the clorine smell. Someone also mentioned thryoid and I also have tyroid desease. I know the smell when I get a cold,,this is different and my head feels funny when I smell it. Just hope it's not more health problems,,I have enough!! Good luck to everyone,,hope you find the answers to this..

Hi Chill D....My dog also has an ammonia like smell when he exhales from his nostrils. It too is intermittent. I'm thinking renal, diabetes etc and am getting very worried. He is urinating and drinking fine and I did a dipstick on his urine and results were as follows: Glucose=NEGATIVE Urobilinogen=NORMAL Ketones=TRACE Bilirubin=++ Protein=+--++
Nitrite=NEGATIVE Leukocytes=NEGATIVE Blood=NEGATIVE PH=5 and Specific Gravity=1.030. Can you run this by your medical student friends please? Also, he was recently treated for Lymes Disease with antibiotics and they say kidney problems can be a problem after infected with Lymes Disease. He is 4 y/o...THANK-YOU!!

About six weeks ago I suddenly noticed an ammonia-like smell in my head. Since then I have had this symptom intermittently. It is not coming from my skin, but it is stronger (sometimes when my head gets hot). I also have had a loss of balance sensations, which is very unusual because I am an Ashtanga practitioner. In the past I have had migraines and visual migraines, and I am sensitive to many smells. However, I have never had a scent associated with the migraines and do not get one related to this ammonia smell. I increased my carbohydrate intake to see if it was related, but to no avail. Hydration also does not seem to have an effect. So I question whether it is glucose or renal related. Although i did have a proteus mirabalis infection and my left renal duct was blocked briefly, but several years ago. I do not seem to have a sinus infection, however it might be persistent and low grade. I did have a severe bronchial infection a few years ago, but again the symptoms started recently. I also did have a trauma to my right temporal lobe just prior to the onset, but it was minor. Stress also does seem to have some relation. Sunlight also seems to be a trigger, but perhaps just because my head gets hot. My only other obvious symptoms other than the scent and  balance issue, is fatigue. So my guess is bacterial related from a dental or other pathogenic exposure, or injury related to the mild head trauma. I'm interested in the h. pylori hypothesis from the comments as well. Please feel free to email me with any comments.

I have found after years of smelling strong chemicals almost everywhere I go and having them linger constantly in my nose even after I've been away from the source, is that the problem was actually in my nose (body). I could smell paint, gas, mold, perfume, sick people, cleaning products, detergent and most any toxic fumes; and once I had an initial exposure, it would cause me to be ultra sensitive and to feel as if I was swimming in a chemical soup odor. Right now I am 100% free of this hyper-sensitivity and my nose is completely clear and fresh and normal in it's smelling sense. This healing occurred through ridding my body of systemic Candida, especially the yeasts that were living in my nasal and sinus passageways. You will be amazed once you start to eliminate this fungus, how much toxic yeasts have been lodged in your body affecting its basic functions, i.e, sense of smell. Bless you and don't give up hope. I think I had it worse than most and am totally free of it now!

I get a faint smell of side stream smoke at a certain place in the house although no one smokes.  It's like after I've sprayed bleach but faintly there.

I too have been baffled at the smell of super glue.  I noticed it around this time last year but it has not been constant.  Right now it is so strong I want to leave my house.  The smell is only in my home.  Since it happened this time last year (which was winter time) I am wondering if anyone else using gas fire logs?  I was wondering since we have had a fire for the last week if these fake fire logs are putting off a toxic odor.  My husband doesn't seem to smell it but I am very sensitive to smells. Any thoughts?

My other question is does anyone smoke an electric cigarette?  No telling whats really in those.

Smelling ammonia turned out to be a symptom of H. pylori for me. You can test for it by getting the Gastro test by Metametrix without having to go to a doctor. There are other options to test, but this is the one I needed when my doctors failed me and wouldn't order the tests I wanted - I'm grateful for this legal loophole (did you know its illegal to order medical tests on your own?) since it's been 13 years of incompetitant doctors. Anyway, I was the only one who smelled the ammonia in my own nose/throat/mouth and didn't have stomach issues that were terribly obvious in the early years. I may have gotten some urea/chlorine smells, too. Now, I'm allergic to almost coods and aromatic compounds (especially phenols). Best to test for Pylori if you suspect you have it before it gets thisfar out of control - its even proven to cause cancer...can't say that about many things definitively. Good luck everyone!

What a relief to find I'm not the only one with this problem!  For about 3 months now I have been intermittently smelling super glue.  I thought maybe one of my dogs had chewed up a super glue tube and left it somewhere in the house... but then I started smelling it when I'm not at home.  My initial fear was some kind of neurological problem.  I have had no other symptoms.  I am 38 years old, a smoker (been smoking for 20+ years - yes, I know I need to quit, that's not the point, here), and do not take any medications.  Has there been any association between this type symptom and neurological issues?  It's only mildly annoying, and if it's not a sign of anything serious, I'm not going to worry about it.

I finally figured out what is causing me to smell super glue in my home.....Gain laundry detergent.

Crazy. I also have the same smell / taste of mint for three days now. I think it's being caused by a bath and body works plug in. I think it's eucalyptus mixed with something. It's very strong and in the kitchen so it smells throughout the house. We've had these for years but never this scent. I just moved it out of the house and hoping the smell in my nose will disappear. It's very annoying and feels like something mint like is stuck in my sinuses. Praying this will be gone soon. I'm also dealing with RLS from opiate withdrawal. I might just stab myself if this goes on much longer. This is the first time with the smell issue. Good luck to everyone and thank God for the Internet.
