I suffered from a major sore throat for a while and had very swollen glands. I went to an ear nose and throat doctor as I thought I felt a different sort of mass in my throat. My doctor sent me for tests for acid reflux and it showed damage way up into my throat. The reason I had the constant sore throat and swollen glands with occasional ear aches was from acid reflux disease. I was put on Nexium and changed my diet and eating times and it cleared it up. Hope this helps anyone.

hi guys,
about 7years ago i had a sore throat that just would not go away. i had it for well over a month and it seemed to get worse at night. i went to the doctor and of course, he tried me on antibiotics which did not work....i went back and again, more antibiotics....they did not work either. by this time i was getting fed up...a sore throat is one thing but to have it morning, noon and night - well, i was in anguish. i couldn't even move my tongue and my throat, when i spoke, seemed to be swollen... i literally cried in pain. again i went to the doc and they checked me for mono, strep throat, etc and everything came back ok. they put me on steroids, as said before, antibiotics and nothing worked. then, one day out of the blue, my sinuses began to run....i took a sinutab and used flonase (prescribed to me awhile back but not cuz of this problem) and within an hour, i finally felt relief. I, myself, had put the problem to being a sinus infection. my sinuses were uncontrolable, sticking to my throat. NOW, 7 years later and as I type, I have the same problem. It's been a week now and I've purchased sinutab, sudafed, dristan spray and NOOOO relief!!!! My sinuses have been running for approxim. 1 1/2 weeks, I've got a tightened chest flu. I'm once again putting it off to the sinus infection problem and today, will be going to the doc....this is terrible! Sinus is a very serious problem. I am a nurse and know all too well that a serious sinus infection can go to the brain and kill an individual. 7 years ago i was not a smoker....today i am.....to those who are afraid to see your doc? don't be.....take a big breath and just do it....may be something small - however, if it is something big....step up to the plate and deal with it while you can.

I have had the same problem, thats how I found this site. I have also been to a primary care Dr. and they always tell me its a virus. I honestly think, they tell you that when they don't know what else it could be. I do however believe that it is probably caused from seasonal allergies. Have you all been tested? I found out I was allergic to pretty much everything outside, plus dust, mold, cats & dogs. I am not allergic to cattle, thank goodness! (said sarcastically) Did you know we swallow 2 qts of mucus everyday? If we are allergic to anything then the production of that increases and drains down our throat making it raw. The only thing I have found that has worked is over the counter Benadryl. I have tried many other prescription allergy drugs but they don't work for me. Good luck!
HI i,ve always got a sore throat nearly all the time ,,,it,s got worse due to air con been installed at work ,,so spreads germs ,,picks them up and blows them out again for every one to catch ie work shopping malls etc ,,a small trick to help sometimes is to have a shot of vodka with some runny honey in and that helps to ease the systoms or gets rid of it but not the full bottle lol,,,,or it,s just a case of a viral infection which cannot be treated with antibiotics you just have to let your own body fight this on it,s own ,,,,,,,but always have a sore throat checked out by your gp just to make sure all is well and is nothing else ,
I went to the emergency room because my throat felt so tight I thought it was closing on me and I feared I could not breathe. Well they told me I had a viral infection and gave me antibiotics, which initially they gave me a shot in the butt and after a few days it cleared up, well a week after I finished the bottle of anti's it came back and I am still dealing with it hurts to swallow, talk, eat, drink, it just hurts. I quit smoking, not because of it but because I had to. which I thought would help, but I feel worse now than when I was smoking.
I dont know what this is and I am going to work on natural remedies to fix my problems. Good luck to you all

I have had this problem for over 2 years, a chronic sore throat. After seeing a few doctors, i found a Gastroenteroligist (sp?) and he thought I had GERD (Gastro Esophogas Reflux Disease or something like that) and has prescribed Nexium and Prevacid. The Prevacid has worked a little in relieving the sore throat, but i have just started, so i'm not sure if that is the solution, but it might be a good idea to suggest that to your doctor or go to a Gastroenterologist. I also do have a stuffed up nose quite often, but nothing more than annoying. I have not found a remedy for that.
:-( My sore throat has been with me for two months also. Could it have anything to do with the Thyroid gland? Anyone know?
for about the past 5 to 7 months I've been having this weird cough and burning throat/chest. When I take deep breaths it causes me to start cough. It feels like i have something stuck in my throat. Ironically this started when I quit smoking for ice hockey season, but before that I would only smoke very rarely and only when I would get drunk. Over the past 2 summers I also have been smoking a lot, prolly nearly everyday (not cigarettes..), but other than summer I didn't do it a lot at all. I can't imagine that my short and infrequent smoking career could be at the root of this, but im scared to ask a doctor because of it. not really sure what to do, its doesn't occur enough to be overally intolerble, but enough to be concerned and want to get rid of it. what should I d?
Hey there!
My throat has hurt for about 6 years now. I had my tonsils out and ever since then I have had CONSTANT throat pain. I have been to NUMEROUS doctors, local and not local. I even went to KU medical center and Mayo clinic in Minnesotta. No one knows what is wrong but it hurts so bad! One ENT told me I could try the anti depressant zoloft beacause he says it helps pain and they are not excaly sure why. He said he wasn't just trying to give me medicine to cover up the pain but he wanted to at least give me something to help with the pain until someone could figure out why I am having this constant pain. I finally agreed to try it and I got up to the maximum dose and it does help SOME. Not completely but some, it takes the edge off. I know its not psychological because when I went to the Mayo clinic I had to talk to a psychiatrist and she said she determined that I REALLY DO have pain. So, if anyone has any ideas please share! I am tired of a life full of throat pain. Thank You SO MUCH!!!!

Try not drinking milk it my cause of allergies, also try nuts and common allergens like dust mites. Taking Claritin AND Zyrtec may also help.
I too have had a constant sore throat mostly the back wall of throat in back of mouth, I did a search using Google and found out that by me using foam earplugs ( my wife snores really LOUD >;) ) it is causing me to have this sore aching throat, (the ears & throat are connected). I have been to ENT and a Gastroenterologists and they found nothing...so I hope the above info helps :-D
could be tonsilitus, or it could be strep throat or it could just be some other infection. if the anti biotics dont help then it is viral and not bacterial as anti biotics kill bacteria...good luck all.
Hello Everyone,
Definately do get your throat checked to make sure it is not cancerous...and if it is a virus, and a nasty one, 1st try using half a teaspoon of salt and put with a little warm water and 3- 4 times a day, gargle with it.
If it still doesnt' work, then go to and look up a product called OPC3, it is an immune system builder, and for the 1st 2 weeks you take two capfuls and liquify to fill line with cold water not hot.... and this is an awesome product to take care of you from colds and flus to cancer....It is a very potent antioxidant goes to work in 5 minutes ....our famillies have been on this for about a year now, and none of us have gotten sick this year....This is the only ISOTONIC product around and has no side effects....
It's main ingredients are Bilberry Extract, Grape Seed Extract and Pine Bark Extract..... One bottle once started lasts 3 months.
If you do have high blood pressure or Diabetes etc... you would take 2 caps daily, but if it's just the throat bug, once gone, just take 1 cap a day to boost your immune system and if you are feeling a bug in your system, take 2 caps wait 2-3 hours and if you are still feeling it 3 hours later, one more cap and you should be back to normal.... I felt the bugs this year, as they are strong....but I happily say, I have not had a sick day this whole last year.

Hey everyone. My father had the same symptoms as the poster, and he ended up having a small tumor at the base of his tongue. It was the same kind Michael douglas has now. He had a sore throat for about 6 months, and went to 3 different doctors. The third finally found it, she was and Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor. He passed away after a year long battle. Don't wait. Get this checked out now!!!!!
