Hi there! So for all of you looking for answers and not getting them, here is the answer: NO. You're not pregnant. I've had the Mirena IUD for 4 years and 7 months, and I'll be replacing it this summer and over the last 4 years there have been SEVERAL instances where I thought I was pregnant. I had all the symptoms, from heavy, sensitive breasts to "baby kicks", to weight gain, to a baby bump that I looked at and thought "there's no way it's not a baby!". But the inevitable truth is, my brain was convinced I was pregnant and by body responded. I was bloating, I had internal air bubbles or something that felt like baby kicks, by breasts were tender and I had cramps because even though I wasn't having a period, I still had "that time of the month" symptoms. I took countless pregnancy tests and none of them came back positive, however, if I was pregnant, they would not have come back as false negative's, because the hormones released by the IUD don't block your HCG levels. I still take a pregnancy test every three months religiously because I don't want to risk such a dangerous pregnancy progressing too far unnoticed but the truth of the matter is, the Mirena IUD is 99% effective and I myself, a 5'10", 150 lb woman, has not experienced a period in over years, and no pregnancies despite several perceived ones.

I will agree with you on some of the things you have said! After my IUD was inserted the first few months I had a regular cycle, by the end of my first year and into my 3rd year with mirena I didn’t have a cycle at all, the past year and a half I have been back to a regular monthly flow. I haven’t had pregnancy symtoms since it’s been inserted, however a coworker of mine brought it to my attention a couple days ago that I’ve been having/complaing about pregnancy symptoms over the last couple of months and it made me realize not only how quick the time went by but I also haven’t had flow in town since feb! At first I complained about being tired (I work from home) and I started to randomly need naps even as early as 10 AM and that 8 hours of sleep a night wasn’t enough! She said she has noticed that’s my emotional state has been off the wall, and apparently I’ve developed a habit for smoothies and chocolate milkshakes! In addition my boobs have been tender for the past month however my nipples feel like they are raw and are more “alert?” .. my fiancé pointed out my nipples have gotten larger as well as like blue lines on the sides of my breast. This past week I have been just full of energy, and my belly is no longer flat and it also is very firm and tight like over all a very heavy feeling. When I’m sitting or laying down it’s honestly hard to take a deep breaths because of it being tight! My sex drive is the highest it has been in 3 years this past week!! The timing of these symptoms are matching up with first trimester and second trimester symptoms! I took an HPT last night and said not pregnant so I took another one this morning and it also said not pregnant. So I looked up false negative with IUD, and I know the Mirena doesnt cause you to have a false negative but it says that one reason you can have a false negative is because you’re too far along. It says that since HPT are set/looking for high levels that you get right after conception. I myself am just worried I’ve been now for 12/13 weeks now and that is causing the false negative. Also my Mirena is ready to be switched out in July of this year!

This kicking sensation is actually quite a common reported side effect with Mirena, though it is not well documented and there is no solid evidence as yet, of what the cause is. I’ve been pregnant before and know what kicking feels like, and with the Mirena I get these sensations almost daily. It’s bizarre. But I do know that many women report this symptom swearing they are pregnant, when actually it’s a currently unexplained symptom of Mirena IUD.

As for the false pregnancy tests...Mirena cannot cause a false pregnancy test if you are in fact pregnant. It’s hormones are specific to creating an uninhabitable environment for sperm. However no contraception is 100% and if you were to fall pregnant on Mirena... (provided you use the test correctly, aren’t testing too early before HCG levels are being produced/high enough to detect and are testing at the best time of day [morning])...then no test will give you a negative result if you are in fact pregnant. Mirena hormones do NOT interfere or intereact with pregnancy hormones.
Also Nothing I’ve read/heard/seen can yet explain the kicking sensation many of us feel, but if you’re test is coming up negative...chances are extremely high that youre not pregnant. Hope that helps!
