I really wish more people followed up with their posts! Would def put me more at ease to know the outcome, since I'm feeling the same way!!! I feel silly even thinking I'm prego, since I'm not suppose up be with Mirena in! So my symptoms are, tender breast, colostrum when nipple is squeezed, majorly nauseous, little weight gain, tired, headaches a lot more, and I think that's it. I've had 3 daughters, so I'm not new at the pregnancy symptoms. I have take a few tests and got negatives. I got a light period, to where I only have a light brownish/pink discharge when I wipe. I have an appointment next week, I'm gonna talk to my dr then. I will def follow up and let y'all know what's going on!!! Everyone out there feeling like I am, I wish you all luck with what's going on!

I also have been concerned about my Mirena lately. I've had mine in for 2 years now and ever since overhead it I've gotten . my period on time every month and it lasts 7-8 days normally. last month it came 5 days late and this month it hasn't come at all and I will be 2 weeks late tomorrow. I have a doctor's appt the last Tuesday of the month so another 2 weeks now. poas on the 10th and it was negative. I have not had any pms symptoms this month at all..normally I have EXTREMELY bad pms but not at all this month. I still have 2 weeks till my appt..but if something changes sooner I will post!

I am a 40 year old woman that had the Mirena in for a little more than a year. I had it put in because I just gave birth to my daughter. I  finally had it removed in October.  My period stopped completely after 8 months.I had all of the symptoms other women have had: weight gain that just doesn't go away, headaches, flutters that felt like pregnancy, anxiety, mood swings, stomach bloating that never went away, zero sex drive. I finally had enough and went to my doctor to have it removed. She said that my blood pressure was high-for me that was 116/90-told her about my anxiety(initially she wanted to put me on Prozac or some other med. I told her no because it is crazy I should need mood elevators for my birth control) She said it was a good thing that I had the Mirena removed because of how my body was reacting. I think more women have these problems and are just ignored. Now I am having the issue of no period after two regular periods. I am 3 weeks late. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests- all negative. I do not know if the Mirena has sent me into an excellerated menopause or if I am pregnant and the levonogestrel is still affecting me some how. I have always been regular. In the 30 years that I have had my period, I have only been late a handful of times. The majority of that being because I was pregnant. And I have NEVER been 3 weeks late unless I was pregnant. The Mirena was the worst thing I could have done to my body. My sister has had hers in for almost 5 years now. She says she likes it but even she is having trouble with weight loss. And now has discovered that she is having horrible acne issues that she has never had-even in her teen years.

I was one of the ones guilty for not following up. I was NOT pregnant! However I'm still having periods after 8 months of having Mirena. Is this normal?

I have had my Mirena in for 4 years and 8 months; recently my breasts have been incredibly sensitive and today I vomited out of the blue for no reason and I had no residual nausea. I haven't had my period in 2 years because of the mirena and with my first pregnancy I had no signs of pregnancy, so honestly I don't know if I'm pregnant or paranoid? I took a pee test a little bit ago and it came back negative, but I'm going to retake it in the morning. Do the hormones decline after having the device in for so long?

Hi

So I've read every single post here. I'm obviously here because I have the same situation (flutters in lower ab, nausea and fatigue) I did the pregnancy test and it came out negative as well. I felt like I was going crazy because I have two children and know what a baby feels like down there in the first few months. Anyway some people have answered, I think everyone is just too lazy to read through the posts. One woman demanded an ultrasound and wasn't pregnant another woman confirmed she wasn't and yet another stated that she wasn't and her dr said it was a phantom pregnancy. Mirena fools your body so perhaps in certain moments of elevated stress or hormonal imbalance it breaks out into full pregnancy symptoms. Most of the people that have had the flutter i noticed had other babies so it could be that these hormones are tricking our bodies to copy those feelings. It sounds bizarre but if you are here reading this you know that there is some explanation and its not that we are pregnant. Its disturbing to say the least. I can hardly function I have such strong symptoms and the nausea is so strong that I almost threw up yesterday. I'm guessing and hoping it will end soon, but to say the least its very discouraging to know that this thing inside me is doing this to my head and body!!

Hello.

My friend has recently had the IUS (Mirena coil) fitted and has since been experiencing symptoms of pregnancy. After reading the comments here she came to me for advice as I am a trainee nurse. I am shocked at the amount of you experiencing the same symptoms with IUS. I am here to put your minds at rest.

Firstly the issue with everyone saying they don't trust the pregnancy test results. Pregnancy tests work by binding the hCG hormone to an antibody. The antibody present in the pregnancy test will bind ONLY to the hCG hormone and not to any other hormone. The hormone hCG is ONLY present in women that are pregnant. This is because the placenta secretes this hormone after fertilization, so unless you are pregnant you won't have this hormone present in you! The IUS releases the hormone progesterone and not hCG so having the IUS does NOT affect a pregnancy test result. So basically if the pregnancy test is negative, the likelihood is your not pregnant!

HOWEVER make sure you are taking the pregnancy test at the right time. If you take it too early after conception and you are pregnant you will not have enough hCG in your blood/urine to be detected by a pregnancy test. To avoid this, take a test on the first day of your missed period. As the IUS can really mess up your periods (sometimes can make them stop completely!) you probably won't know when this is. In this case you can do a pregnancy test three weeks after the day of the alleged conception.

Secondly the issue of all the symptoms. The IUS can cause completely on its own some pregnancy symptoms. For example headaches, acne and even breast tenderness. This is caused because of the hormone progesterone (that is released by the IUS), not because of being pregnant. Having these symptoms may then cause you to really start believing your pregnant and other symptoms may occur. This is what we call pseudocyesis, or a phantom pregnancy. Although most common in animals like dogs, humans can have this. It is thought to happen because of the stress of someone really believing they are pregnant causes the secretion of hormones similar to those secreted when pregnant (But NOT hCG!!) This causes symptoms like swollen belly, nausea and even feeling of fetal movements!!

If you are concerned you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test. If you are not satisfied by the results of this test, and truly believe you are pregnant then go see your GP. They could do a blood test to check for the presence of hCG in your blood (If hCG is found you are probably pregnant), hCG can be detected in your blood before it can be detected by a pregnancy test and is sometimes more reliable. If you are still not satisfied your GP can refer you for an abdominal ultrasound. This is what women who are pregnant have to check the well being of the baby. If the scan shows no baby and finds no heartbeat you are definitely not pregnant! However to have an abdominal ultrasound you will really have to push your GP hard as they probably won't be very willing to refer you for one If the pregnancy test and blood test are negative.

It is also worth noting that certain medical conditions can mimic the symptoms of pregnancy including ectopic pregnancy, morbid obesity and cancer. These conditions may need to be ruled out with tests so if you are ever in any doubt go see your GP!!

IUS is more than 99% effective (some doctors argue that it is more effective than sterilization!) so as long as you are responsible and are checking for the strings once a month or after each period then you should be protected.

Hope this helps, and remember if you have any doubts. go see your GP :)

I know many women worry about the false pregnancy test with the Mirena mostly because so many chemical birth control methods can cause a negative pregnancy test when you are still pregnant. I also know that Mirena will cause an ectopic pregnancy-this does not produce enough hormone to give a positive test most of the time. I have know women that have gotten pregnant on the Mirena. I found this birth control to be more stressful than it was worth. I am currently waiting on a blood test to find out if I am pregnant. I am also having my thyroid, kidneys and liver checked. If non of these gives any results then I am having an ultrasound to check the lining of my uterus.

Yes. I had periods for almost the first year and then they stopped. This is normal. You may be one of those women thatstill has their periods even with the MIrena.

I would definitely go to the doctor because you are coming to the end of the 5 year mark. Even if you are not pregnant, you need to look into a new Mirena or another form of birth control.

Yes that is normal. I have had Mirena for 4 years now and have had a period every single month. We are just one of the unlucky ones. They should get lighter over time though.
