I had sinus surgery, a deviated septum, and a bone spur removed from nose. The surgery took about 2 hours and I woke up in soooo much pain I was crying. The nurse gave me more meds and the pain is more tolerable now. The worst part is the blood and drainage but its been 2 days since my surgery and it only bleeds when I get up and walk around. I have a sinus rinse that I have to used 3xs a day minimum and antibiotics and pain meds. I have stints that have to be removed one week from the date of surgery and it can not come fast enough.

Hi everyone. I have surgery coming up in 2 months and will need packing (sounds terrible but what can you do? Just gotta toughen up) I need packing because not only do I need the Septoplasty surgery but they also need to cut through my sphenoid sinus cartilage bone as its currently blocked and the passage is terribly narrow according to my CAT scan. I was just curious if anyone has had both done before and what were their experiences? I can't seem to find any stories on both getting done off Google. I'm hoping after this surgery I'll be able to stop getting sick so often as I am prone to multiple sinus infections/colds throughout all year plus recurring sinus migraines and facial pressure.

Hello everyone,

I am still going through recovery from my surgery on the 25th of April. I had multiple procedures performed that included correcting a deviated septum, removing two large cysts, and also removing the boney structure (can't remember the medical term) from one sinus. It was a type of defect that created a boney bubble within the sinus cavity. The nurse referred to it as a Cadillac surgery because I had so many procedures performed at once.

Be careful what you read prior to the surgery since there are a lot of horror stories out there. I had a lot of anxiety pre-op and they gave me sedatives to help. I have read several stories where the nasal surgery was done in the doctor's office. I will say that my nerves were calmed a bit because the surgery was performed in a hospital surgery wing. I met the anesthesiologist (she had previously had the surgery) and the doctor also came in for a brief visit. I remember the operating room briefly and then I went under.

I was on the way home within the hour of waking up. Make sure you read the entire post-op recovery guide completely. My ongoing recovery has been much more difficult than I anticipated. I have large stents in each nostril that are stitched in so they won't move. I also have dissolvable stitches that are a different color that are separate. I should find out the biopsy result from the removed cysts tomorrow.

I am on Oxycodone and acetaminophen for pain and also amoxicillin for infections. I have ran a low grade fever almost every night and the third night I woke up in a pool of sweat. I am not sure how high the fever went but it broke so I was ok with that. I did not have packing placed in my sinus cavities but did have the gauze mustache. On a side note use an elastic band and not tape to hold this in place. You are already in enough pain without ripping your skin to change this out. Without packing I changed my gauze every hour for the first three days due to blood. I was coughing up blood due to it draining down my throat. My teeth constantly throb. Oddly enough my dental implant even hurts. My eyes hurt and my head hurts.

There a few things that help. Saline rinses will push a lot of fascinating items out of your nose. Most of this will be blood, scabs, and what I can tell are little pieces of leftover tissue. Also be sure to take your pain medication and make yourself drink water. Buy a large pillow that will let you sleep upright. This helps everything drain and not solidify to be cleaned out later. Popsicles and sherbet are wonderful since it can be painful to chew. I have lost seven pounds so far and simply have little desire to eat.

The last thing I will point out is that everyone's surgery is different. Some people will tell you how easy it was...Good for them. My mother is one of these but she was clueless about stents, etc.. No surgery is the same and no recovery is the same. I have my stents removed tomorrow and still reserving judgement on whether this was all worth it. Keep the faith and good luck.

I had the same procedure about 5 weeks ago and I am still in so much pain. I have been looking through the internet and you are the only one that is just like me. All the other stories people are saying how in doesn't hurt. I feel like I am walking around with a serious sinus infection which is making me nauseas and very tired. Although the pain keeps me a wake for mos of the night. I also had the same reaction to the removal of the splint. I would never recommend this to anyone, unless it was a life or death situation.

Hmm it seems you have an infection then. It should be totally healed within 5 weeks! I never had any pain from my deviated septum surgery. I did have a stuffy nose for a few weeks but then my ENT said to restart using my flonase since i have sinus/nasal swelling and stuffiness from allergies. That worked like a charm. You may have had a botched nose surgery, I don't know. Personally you should have had follow ups with your ENT who did the surgery through this whole time. If not, you seriously need to contact them for a followup appointment... I had one I think once a week for over a month or so. I had no complications of surgery (plus i had other surgeries with this deviated septum surgery.) You really need to call your doctor.

Hi I had septoplasty and turbine reduction on 18th June 2013 and everything went well. Day 1 I slept upright to stop blood going down back of throat - only had blood with mucus in left nostril (where problem was). Day 4 been sleeping on my back and occasionally breathing through nose. Looked up my nose and left nostril looks the same as before narrow and deviated. Hoping this is swelling and will get better with time. Fingers crossed.

Had my nose broke on the 20th of June while playing softball. This also deviated my septum. Surgery at 11 AM to reset the bones of the nose and repair the deviated septum. Have not been able to breath through my nose for days so what is a few more days. I will follow up with results

Hi Ruchi, I also had surgery back in 2008, after years of waking up dozens of times a night due to trouble breathing through one or both nostrils. Honestly, I did feel a bit better during the day, but still had problems breathing at night. Doctor told me that septoplasty sometimes doesn't work so well ... saw another ENT a year later and he recommended trying a nasal dilator to get a decent night's sleep. I tried a few different ones and they really help me to breathe at night with no more waking up through the night. The one I use comes from Europe and is call respifacile.

They DO NOT BREAK YOUR NOSE!  I just had septoplasty last week, along with turbinate reduction, and sinus surgery- and they fixed my deviated septum and they did NOT break my nose to do it- The WHOLE procedure is done through your nostrils.. It might depend on how bad the deviation is.. If you HAD a broke nose already- they might Break it again to put it back- but for people who never had a broke nose, that have a deviation they do NOT break it to fix it.  The procedure is life changing. The stints are a pain in the arse- but that's about it.  After the stints come out the dried blood is a pain to get out- but all was a piece of cake compaired to the infections I was having.

I just had it done two days ago. The problem i had was peeing after the surgery. The drugs that prevent nausia make it so I couldn't pee. The hospital wouldn't let me leave until I showed a little progression in that department. I never took one prescription pain pill. I am fine other then the discomfort of not being able to breath out of my nose. I could breath out of my nose briefly after surgery and it was amazing. Shortly after blood and swelling came. I was given splits only and those are coming out on the 7th day. I am assuming they are going to clear my sinuses the same day. I can't wait to finally be able to breath and to breath well. This surgery is totally worth it. I would not hesitate to do it again. They do not break your nose. I live in Boston and we have some of the best surgeons in the country.

I had nasal surgery less than a week ago to repair a nasal fracture (from getting hit in the face with a refrigerator door amongst other things) and deviated septum as well as to improve my breathing (I've had constant nasal drip into to my lungs which has affected my breathing).  The surgery itself went pretty smoothly (was taken into surgery around 9:30am and left the recovery room around 12:30 or so.  The doctor put packing in my nostrils (tampons he called them) for one night then I went into get them removed the next morning.  I was prescribed Percoset every 6 hours for the pain which definitely helped.  Breathing out of my mouth for 24 hours was not comfortable mainly because it made my mouth and lips extremely dry and lips slimey. Constantly sucking on small pieces of ice helped a lot with the dryness.  I few times I felt a slight panic attack coming on about not being able to breath out of my nose, but after I made a conscience effort stop my mind from going there I was ok.  This first happened when I was waking up out of the anesthesia when my nose was packed and my throat was numb. Feel like I couldn't breath for a second, but once the nurse gave me ice chips to suck on it helped.  I think I maybe just needed to swallow and hydrate my throat.  Once the doctor removed the packing the next morning, I thought I was ok, but quickly felt like I was going to pass out.  My stomach turned and felt lightheaded and had to ask the nurse to find me a bed to lie down on.  Once I was able to lie back, the nausea and lightheadedness subsided thank goodness.   It's been 5 days since I had surgery.  I am still bruised, both eyes back an blue but it is going away as well as most of the swelling.  I've been taking antibiotics (cephalexin) and using a saline rinse several times a day to help hydrate and clean out my nostrils.  Lots of scabbing and stuffiness there.  I am so looking forward to Friday when I can get the nose cast removed.  It is causing my insane itching both underneath the bandage itself (where you can't scratch of course) as well as intense inchiness around my face.  Was driving me absolutely insane at one point.  If this happens to you, try applying an anti-itch spray with a Q-tip or tissue to your face.  This helped me tremendously.  Thank goodness since I thought I was going to lose it.  The spray I am using is a generic brand Extra Strength First Aid Anti-Itch spray that you most likely could find at any drug store near you.    It contains diphenhydramine HCI 2% and Zinc Acetate 0.1%. Other than that I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the results of the surgery look good and help me to breathe better. If so I will be ecstatic.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  Hope this information helps someone out there.
