I'm 44 years old and have had heavy painful periods since I've been 11. I have 2 children and had my tubes tied when I was 33.
I had the Novasure ablation done this past Tuesday. I went in for outpatient procedure, was put under general. I had had a period from Dec. 19th until Tuesday when I went in and was at my wits end and wanting this done and over with! I had very heavy flow and cramping the whole night before the procedure and couldn't take anything for the pain, it was misery! I was so glad to get knocked out - and when I woke up - not a single cramp! There were no cramps, barely any discharge and I felt absolutely great! I went back to work on Thursday and have had more discharge yesterday and today, but I figure it will ebb and flow with my activity level. I had a bowel movement for the first time today and had a bit more blood I guess because of my straining - also a bit more crampiness afterward, but not terrible. I wish everyone success with this procedure - if it doesn't work for me I'm planning to have a hysterectomy - 30+ years of painful periods are enough already! Good Luck to Everyone! I'm going to get on here January of 2010 and post my progress -

I had my ablation and polypectomy yesterday under local anaesthetic and mild sedation.
Before this I had horrendously heavy periods-using a menstrual cup and 2 pads I couldn't get through 2 hours without soaking my jeans, and between periods had constant fluid loos from the polyps.
I felt a little pain during the procedure, I whimpered 3 times and I'm normally a big wuss. I watched the procedure on the monitor, same as the surgeon was using.
I dozed for the rest of the day, have had NO pain since, and NO painkillers.....
so far so good.... :-P

I had nova sure done over 2 years ago in a doctors office. Everything went well. I still have heavy painful periods. It did nothing for me. It slowed down my periods for about 6 months. Then they started to get worse. Not as bas as when I had it done. But... I had such high hopes for this procedure. My friend had it done and has not had a period since.
I had a D&C, histeroscopy and NovaSure done on the 1/26/09. Went for my follow up on 2/2. At pre-op they mesaured my uterus. Dr. said when he actually got in there that my uterus was larger than what the sono measured and the mesh/netting could only expand to a certain point but to keep our fingers crossed. He said the before procedure picture of the uterus was pink and after procedure picture the lining was white, he said we want to see white. I will know more in about 3 months. I had 1 week of pink/watery discharge and bloating. No cramping. I am hoping all went well. I will post more as time goes on.
I had Novasure done on 01/23/09. I am a quadriplegic, so I opted for the procedure to be done in the office. I guess since I am paralyzed and my sensations and feelings are altered, I didn't feel much.
So far I am doing okay, just still having some bleeding, which I hope will stop soon. I really do hope this procedure stops my period, because it's hard on me mentally having someone else have to clean that mess every month. Being a quad I require assistance with everything I do.

I am looking into this procedure with my doctor tomorrow... what I need to know is the cost. I have a $5,000 deductible on my insurance so everything is basically up to me.
Any input on this? Thanks!

I am 39 year old and had the Novasure procedure this morning. I had a pretty good experience. I am having mild cramping so far....nothing unbearable for sure!
For the procedure I was put under sedation, which they said was basically going to sleep. The procedure started at about 8:45 am and i was leaving to go home at 9:45 I believe.
Felt a little sleepy on the way home but no big deal! My pain level is about 3 out of 10 presently (11 am).
Hopefully this info is helpful!

I would just like to share my Novasure Procedure experience with you all, just in case you are planning on having this and you have NOT been informed of the possible complications. Just about 2 years ago (i was 41 years old then) I began to experience abnormal/heavy bleeding. I consulted my GYN several times regarding this matter, and he strongly suggested a procedure called Novasure. He told me this was fast, easy, and the time away from work was 48 hours. Basically, it had no real complications except abdominal cramping, and he could prescribe me some medicine for this. With the Novasure Procedure they insert a metal wand just inside the uterus, it releases a mesh wire @ 180 watts, and in just 90 seconds you are done. I would have to have a D&C done prior to this also. The whole process takes about 1 hour under general anesthesia.
So…..I go have my pre-op ultrasound done, just to make sure everything is where it is supposed to be, and it was, so I scheduled my procedure. I remember waking in recovery in moderate pain. The recovery nurse gave me some Darvocet (pain medicine) and told me I was probably hurting because I have never had children and my uterus was contracting. I was released from the hospital about an hour later. I took my pain medicine thru out the evening for cramping and pain. At approximately 4PM the next day, I had my Mother rush me to the hospital because the pain was so severe I could no longer stand it. They did x-rays and a CT and later told me I had air and fluid in my abdominal cavity. A surgeon later told me I needed emergency surgery if I had any hopes to live, and he was still not sure I would. By this time I was septic! By the grace of God and a GREAT surgeon I’m still here. I had 3 holes burned in my colon from the Novasure Procedure, I spent 8 days in the hospital and lost 2 weeks of work. Well……I do not have any abnormal bleeding, but my colon will never be the same. I’m only upset because the complications were never explained to me and they were not on Novasure’s website.

It is now coming up on 24 hours after my Novasure procedure and I am very surprised. Having read all the posts in this and in other forums, I was concerned that maybe I might have problems or complications. I don't!
The procedure was exactly as described by many others -- an hour worth of prep, a fifteen minute or so procedure, and 30 minutes or so in PostOp. They gave me an IV to knock me out, woke up in post-op with some bleeding, no nausea, just a bit woozy. I did have some cramping, like a bad period, but Vicodin and Motrin (alternating every 5 hours) did the trick last night. The discharge is very light, almost not having any discharge at all as a matter of fact. Again, this really surprises me. I was expecting much worse, but then my OB-GYN is very experienced and has done this procedure hundreds of times.
My advice: Find a doctor who does this procedure a LOT. I lucked out, I guess. Of course, time will tell with respect to the long-term effects. I am hoping to be done with periods forever, and I hear that this happens in about half the cases. I want to be in that lucky half :-D

HI everyone. I went to my Gyn in the end of Dec of 07 for my papsmear. He put me on BC due to an enlarged uterus. I was unable to take the BC due to major mood swings. I already suffer from major mood swings I did not need any help in that area. I have always had irregular cycles. I could go months without a cycle then when it does hit I am bleeding horribly but only for 5 days. Today I go back for a follow up. He wants me to get an US of my pelvic and think about doing the Novasure. Of course if I have any fibroids he wants me to consider an hysterecomty. Now I am only 28. If the hysterectomy is something that he sees that is needed I will get a 2nd opinion. But my question is this. How will the novasure help with my enlarged uterus. I have read a lot about this procedure and it seems it is only for menorrhagia.
Let me add I am married and we have our boy and girl and do not want any more kids. In fact my husband has had a vasectomy.

I had the Novasure in January. My Uterus was larger than the wand that they use for the procedure, but Dr. seemed hopeful that it worked. So far I had a period that lasted 7 day's in February and then again in March that lasted for 5 day's. Bleeding is not as heavy as before. You may want to ask the Dr. about the wand and how much it expands. I think the wand is one size and expands only to a certain amount. I feel it was somewhat a waist of money because he never went talked to me about the size of uterus verses size of the wand.
I had the Novasure procedure done in late 2007. Was 47 at the time and had increasingly heavy flow for the last 10 years. PreSurgery evaluation and testing was particularly detailed. From reading many of the former posts, my doctor would not have done this procedure on the candidates as they had existing conditions pointing to failure and not success. After having the procedure done there has been NO BLEEDING AT ALL.
Careful evaluation of patients is an absolute must if success is to be achieved. Just because an individual might want the procedure, doesn't mean they should receive it!

Had the novasure done 4/6/09. My doctor did it as out patient. Was at the hospital at 9:am, had procedure done and was home by 2:00pm. Had cramps and some pressure for about 5 hours after the procedure was done. Stay home next day as a pre caution. Back to work on wed even went to the tanning bed. So far I have had no problems, just some light discharge. Will know in two weeks if it stops my periods. I will be 50 in seven months so I pray it does stop my periods. have been regular on my periods and they would last 4 days, but that was four days of misery and pain. Hopefully those days are in the past. Well keep you posted in the months to come with me being peiod free I hope.
Hi I debated whether to post this or not but I think that I should.
Since the first day at 12 years old when I started my period, I have been in intense pain. Heavy bleeding for 7 days at least. I would roll around and in too much in pain to even cry. The only thing that would work at all was lots of pain meds and the hottest heating pad ever made, (I wore them out so often I should have been the offical tester of heating pads) I was told that it could be edometriosis, but the only way to be sure was to do some scope which could cause more scarring and more problems. I was scared and young so I didn't do anything. They told me that it would get better after childbirth. I have had two babies. It didn't get better. Also another thing I discovered about having babies is that my periods were VERY similiar to those pains and I was induced with both of them). I have been desperate to stop the pain, heavy bleeding and complete uselessness of my life when my period comes barging in. That brings me to the next part of the problem: my cycle was NEVER consistant. Some were every 30, 40, 60, 72, 24, 55, 43, 51, etc... I kept records for years hoping there would be SOME kind of pattern, there was none. So when I saw the brocure at my dr ofc I jumped on it. I was scared and cautious about it also. But for me it was a no brainer. Here is my experience.
I had the Procedure done Oct 5, 2007. Mine was done in my doctor's office in Southern Indiana. I was overdue for my period (as usual) so I am beginning to think that the timing in your cycle might be important. More lining to be removed = none to grow back? I was told to take the valium before my appointment. I was to take an antibiotic the morning of, and something else three days before to thin my cervic and prep things. I got really shaky and cold and giggily, everything was funny! THey laughed right with me. THe doctor was confident that I would never have a period again, even thought he brochure says that there were other possible outcomes, she said, "You are going to love me after today." I was given an iv of something and they did some scans, a D&C, a pap smear, a pregnancy test, and a uterine biopsy. Then they started the procedure, it lasts for 90 horrible seconds of very extense pain. They gave a shot of toradol just before the procedure. Then they gave me another one when I stopped talking (yapping incessantly; I found out later) and another one when I couldn't breath thru the pain. Then they were telling me to get up and get dressed. They might have given me something else but it was very fuzzy, you see. My mother in law drove me there and home. I went home and slept for 8 hours and I had no pain AT ALL! I had a watery, at times slightly pink, discharge for several weeks. But no blood and no pain. No bloating past the first week (?) At least not noticeable. I seemed to have some incontinence but I was also having a nerve compressed from my ruptured disc pressing on it and it could have been the culpret. But even that was no big deal. I called the doctor's office and asked a couple of questions and I didn't even have to give them my name! They recognized my voice from all the talking I did the day before! Apparently, I tell everyone anything when I'm high, it seems! I vaguely remember talking a LOT.
They are great and everything went better than I hoped. I haven't had a period yet and it's April of 2009! However, I was just today informed that I have a cyst on my right ovary and a fibroid tumor in the wall of my anterior uterus. I wonder now how this will affect how it grows and how to treat it since I have no lining left. I have no idea how big it is or what this means for me. I have read terrible things about fibroids and I didn't think they were so bad before! I definately don't want to look pregnant or to start the misery of pain all over again!! Any thoughts? So far nothing I've read gives me any input on this.

I have read the post here and notice that no one seems to have the same post op problems I am experiencing. I had my surgery on Thursday April 2nd. Like most of the posters here, I was plagued with uncontrolled heavy bleeding. My history includes removal of my left ovary back in 2000 due to cysts and multiple fibroid tumors. Since removal of my ovary I have been suffering from hormonial inbalance and do not get a period but once a year. Well that was until March 11, 2009. I got my period after a year and a half of peace shortly after getting a tooth pulled. Didn't think anything about it until 10 days later it was still gushing. I work in an active Emergency room and having a flow like that when you are constantly on your feet is no joke. I was filling up a pad an hour. By day 20, I was pale and bleeding clotts. My HCT was 7. Even though I am 41 years of age I did not want to have a hysterectomy. I have some issues related to hormones and having a complete orgasm. No uterus, nothing to contract!
On April 2nd at about 7am, I had the procedure done under general. When I came to at about 9am, I experienced a lot of pain and contracting. They gave my meds via IV to control this. Then I experienced extreme nausea, I was given meds for this. Once I mellowed out I was taken to the recovery room. Within two hours I was discharged. By 5pm that afternoon, I felt like a new woman. My pelvis felt so empty and the pain was minimal. Most importantly, no bleeding. The only side effect was migraines, pinkish watery discharge with a slight fishy odor and break thru pain. I was in seven heaven. At my 7 day Post Op, I hugged my Dr. with my newly found energy.
Well now for the flip side. I had to go see my Dr yesterday on an emergency basis because now that watery d/c has a foul order and is accompanied by pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. It hurts worst when I am in a sitting position for more than 30 minutes. I also sell life ins during the day and have had to cancel appointments due to my pelvic pain. It has been very costly. While at the office, I had a low grade temp of 99.7 . He stated my urine shows some white blood cells but the exam showed no vaginal infection. He said it is not uncommon for the uterus to contract to get the fibroids out of the womb. The d/c is from the lining of the uterus mixed with fibroid dying tissue. I was sent to the lab for CBC and have an appt for a sonogram on Tuesday. He gave me a prescription for ibuprofin and Vicoden, which has helped the pain. No antibotics. My vision is also bothering me and is my back. I have also been having some chest pains or SOB. I am getting very nervous. He told me to watch my temp and they would call me with results. Did anyone else experience these symptoms?
