I had the same situation. It was a painful mammogram and they wanted to do an ultrasound after. They found what they thought they would find: a cyst. I have had cysts for a few years as I am going through menapause. After that mamagram my
Breadth are still sore.
A friend hugged me and I nearly screamed in pain. This hasn't happened before. I'm concerned but I am pretty sure the pain was from the mamagram as it really hurt.

There is a better procedure, the machine is called a thermograph, no radiation and it works better than a mamogram why don't hospitals use it, maybe because they don't have to buy it and they can keep using those prehistoric machines and make money doing it, don't know??? my next mamogram will be with a therograph ! My breast is killing me after my mamogram it's been over a week. I want them to catch cancer early but I don't want the radiation either.

I did a mammogram today..although painful i would rather endure the 3 mins pain and find out of anything nasty is going on rather than find out later and have to go through a lot more pain. Come on ladies. .nothing worth doing is not going to be painfree or cheap..i thank god for these services.

Nurse Lauie, It is very commendable that you have sympathy and compassion for your patients. Regretfully so many of us experience Nurse Ratched or her offspring during our mammography. The excessive pain I've experienced following my 3rd mammogram is not worth the image obtained. My breasts now sag, constantly rubbing my chest unless wearing a bra. As an example of my high threshold to pain, I refused sedation during my colonoscopy to avoid vertigo that would be caused by the medication. The procedure was very uncomfortable but I managed to make it through it watching the procedure as the Dr. performed it. (squeaky clean thank you). The discomfort following my lumpectomy, identified by palp, was a cake walk compared to the 3rd mammogram. Each mammo became excessively worse although I was assured that the new 3D imaging was painless. I so regret not following my instincts and walking out! 1 week later CBS news broadcasts studies that increased tests have not decreased the death rate. My pain is constant, similar to others described here. Women- I work with computers not in medicine, At the same time I'll not have another Mammogram because the damage appears to be irreversible!!! There are other ways to be diagnosed. Oh I nearly forgot to mention the lumps found by Palp and clearly visible during ultrasound for the bioposy required 20+ images to be taken to display in a Mammogram! Remember you are the best advocate for yourself. Stand up, say no if that is right for you, Cindy Leah

Is been a week and a half since I got my mammogram and also feeling pain in my right noob more than in the left one. I previously have had two non cancerous tumors removed but it has never hurt as much before. I have been applying ice and it does help but the pain is there. I think I have enough of these method of torturing us! Really! Teresa got to be another better way. This is just not acceptable anymore and I will complain to my nurses and doctor tomorrow especially when you have had previous surgeries. Btw, don't be scare of an autopsy I had one done too in my left breast and it it not hurt at it although always unpleasant any of these methods are. My breasts are dense they said it makes it more difficult to clearly get results. But this time us been too much. I had it! We all need to work and let the medical field know it is traumatizing to say the least.

I am very sorry, you're in pain.
I had my very painful Mammagram almost 3 years ago and still have pain in my left breast. It usually occurs if I do a lot of exercise. My nipple is now inverted most of the time.I've had other tests as I was afraid that there may be something going on, but all tests have been negativ and other than the left breast pain, I feel good.
I have found a heating pad and ibuprofen helps.
I refuse to ever get another mammagram, I will get an ultrasound next time.

You speak as if your mother was elderly. Perhaps she died of old age, and cancer was the ailment? We all die of something, the issue is when and quality of life until such time.

I know this is a really late reply. I had a mammogram a month ago and it hurt like never before. I actually had tears in my eyes it was so painful. I ended up having to go back in two weeks later because the mammogram showed a suspicious area. I got teary eyed when they called me back due to the amount of pain from before. Once again I was enduring another painful mammogram.

Since the first mammogram I have had chest pains, trouble breathing, fluttering in my chest, numbness and tingly sensations in my arms, burning pain in shoulder blades, and pain in my collarbone. I thought I was having heart problems. I went to the ER and was diagnosed with muscle strain, due to the mammogram.

Now I have a lot of family members who have had cancer so I will have to get regular mammograms but knowing how much I was in I am scared to go back

I had the zings of pain too before I had a cyst removed the size of a gooses egg. It's worth getting the biopsy. If it's a cyst get it removed. The cyst being removed stoped the pain for me.

Ladies, I too have an extremely painful mammogram the Technitian flatten my small breast so much that the plates was almost touching each other. I told her it was very painful not to squeeze the plates so much but she did as much pressure as it could go. Almost with tears and very red breasts after the mammogram. I told her that was the last time in my life I'll do it. I'm 65. It was the worst pain I experienced. So, I started researching and found out that there is another way, not pressing the breast and more effective in detecting cancer, is called Thermography! You can find in your state where they do a thermogram. Look under Thermography Centers that are approved. They take a picture of your breast with a special camera and that's it. No pain. Look also Thermography vs Mammography. Is a release for me. Next year I will try it since last week I have a mammogram. Hope my insurance will cover that.
