Hi, I'm on my third pregnancy and have had excess saliva all 3 times. With the first child about 7 years ago doctors listened to me but had no solution and didn't really try hard to find one. I just kept spitting into a cup or plastic bottle with a screw on lid-wide mouth bottles work best:) Then with my second pregnancy the doctors thought I was making it all up. I was able to chew gum and suck on jolly ranchers. This time I've been sucking on hard candies the whole time and my teeth are starting to hurt, I'm guessing because of all the sugar. It is annoying, but I find that when in public the candies or gum work, then you just have to say you want something sweet. I was hoping someone would have some other ideas-but I guess I'll just stick with the candies and maybe go sugarless.

at the age of 21, with my first pregnancy, i spat all day and it subsided as soon as i gave birth.

at the age of 55, i am suffering with rhinosinusitis-runny nose all day (ongoing every winter). antibiotics do not work. may be yeast, i guess. may be some connection.

I thought i was the only going through this problem. I am totally frustrated i don't what to do. I have severe morning sickness i can't keep anything down. And then there is the excessive saliva. I've tried sweets and as soon as i'm done sucking on one more saliva comes. This is my first pregnancy and i'mm definitely not doing this again. its so depressing.
My only hope is that all this will go away after my first trimester. I am totally traumatized. Help!!! If someone has a solution please help i really need it. I'm so miserable. I'm in my 9th week of pregnancy. :'(

ARRGHHH!!!! I'm 8 weeks into my pregnancy and I'm drowning in spit!! Every time I swallow I feel like throwing up or I do throw up! It's gross. I have two boxes of kleenex by my bed and a box of kleenex at all times. Drinking very very cold water helps and hydrates me from all the spitting.
This happened to in my first pregnancy.I had a bottle in the car. Having to spit in a tissue is my life saver. Sometimes I pretend to cough and and spit in it.
I wish everyone a healthy pregnancy despite all the discomfort.

This is my second pregnancy and I am in my 10th week. I've had excessive salivation, and like you all, I am glad that I am not the only one going through this because I'm the only one in my family. My only hope is the fact that, with my first pregnancy, it went away at the end of the first trimester....or at least it was much more bearable and I didn't need to spit all the time after the first trimester. It really does make the nausea worse if you keep swallowing. I have several spit cups all over my house and in my car. I know it sounds gross to other people, but I'm just far too irritated at this point to be considerate of the people who are not going through this problem.

I hear that eating starchy foods make the saliva worse, like crackers or rice, so I try to stick with eating protein..small amounts... all the time because while I am eating, I don't have this problem. Also I think I am going to ask my doctor about scopolamine patch, which has side effect of dry mouth, so I hear that it may help, and it's safe during pregnancy. I haven't tried antihistamines but I guess it can also make you drowsy, which is not the side effect I want to have. I will try to post again if I find anything new.

Hello all. This is my 4th pregnancy. I have not found much comfort for this horrible spitting either. My mother only can share how she sucked ice chips all day long which seemed to help for her. For those of you that have spit in the past, did you find any relationship between the sex of the baby and the excessive salivation????

I spit with all four, but I spit more with my son (my first child) than with my two girls.

I am 15+ weeks preggers and I can't remember when it stopped with the other ones, but I don't recall spitting this much. Mine is not related to nausea...it is more related to heartburn. The times when I don't have heartburn (which are rare), I don't seem to spit as much.

I have tried everything but meds. NOTHING seems to work. I keep cups, bottles, tissues, etc...everything with me all the time. I sleep with towels in my mouth to suck up the spit, otherwise it pools in my mouth and I wake up gagging and choking.

My mother joked that we should invent something like the dentist uses to suck up our spit when we are getting our teeth cleaned for women who have that problem. You could walk around with this thing in your mouth and a bag on your hip that catches the saliva....ha...ha...ha....LOL!!!!!!!!Anyone wanting to join me in this invention, let me know. There may not be a big market, but for the women that are SPITTING MAD like all of us, they would pay top dollar to have SOMETHING to help suck this up (at least you could use it at home).

My first pregnancy didn't cause too much trouble for me on spitting. It stopped before my 2nd trimester. I had a boy. Now it is my second pregnancy I am almost 28 weeks. My spitting starts from the day I found I was pregnant and keeps going on, until, I believe, after my upcoming delivery. I searched online so many times and tried different things. NOTHING helps. So I gave up and keep spitting in cups, toilets, trash cans. It is the most annoying thing I have had with my body. I affects my life, my job, everything. Sometimes people are curious, asking me if I am sipping tea? I said no I have to spit because I am pregnant. One time at work my boss told me some women in the meeting did not like me spitting in front of them. I thought, screw them, someday I wish you catch this problem when your turn comes. I just hope people be more understanding and sympathic about this spitting problem in pregnant women, cause you never know who else around you may be affected. Next time it could be youself. 8-|

God bless us.

Hello, Im so sorry i am just seeing this post..Whats funny is for my first pregnancy, when I experienced this rare symptom, I couldnt really find anyone talkin of it anywhere...at first I thought I was the only one experiencing this, but my obygn told me its a rare symptom, and that there is a medication for it, but it would be worthless to use because it doesnt really stop it, just slows it down...so the best I could do was chew gum, which would get very tiring but it did help me from spitting....And i experienced this through out my 1st and 2nd, and 2mth in my 3rd trimester...very very irritating and disgusting..I know this sounds disgusting but I would spit approx, a gallon to a gallon and a half per day...Second pregnancy exact same thing...Hope this is helpful to some...good luck : )

I'm currently 34 weeks pregnant..my excessive spitting started around 16 weeks and I have been spitting every 5-10 seconds ever since. I tried everything that has been suggested to me with no relief...so now I just deal with it by carrying around a little 8oz plastic bottle that I spitt in constantly. However with the excessive salivation I also have terrible heartburn that I have been fighting off also and I take pepcid AC for that. This is my first pregnancy (its a boy)...I believe I will not get any relief from this until I deliver.

I am in my first trimester with my 3rd pregnancy and have had the spitting problem with all three pregnancies now. I read everyone's respones and can relate very well to all of them. It is very annoying and definitely takes over your life. And also, it does make me very nauseated even if I think about swallowing the spit. The spitting during my other 2 pregnancies only lasted the first half which is a good thing but it is really almost a crippling problem. My family doesn't understand b/c my mother never had it and my sister never had it, they just think it is gross and they don't really come around to help b/c of it. This will definitely be my last pregnancy b/c of my HARD time during pregnancy I am gettting my tubes tied during this c-section when I deliver. I cannot put my children or my husband through this again let alone myself. It really messes with your mind and makes you think you are less of person or not a normal person b/c of this awful and very embarrassing problem. I have tried chewing gum, which for me doesn't help very much, and sucking on mints, which the only thing that has done now is tear up my mouth, my gums are hurting right now b.c of the sugar. So, right now I am just spitting into a towel which relieves the issue for a few seconds until I have to spit again. Next time i see my Doctor I am going to ask him about the patches and see if he will let me use them.

I am now 18 weeks preg with my first and have the same problem since week 5. As soon as I eat something sweet, it gets worse. I use 7 large tissue boxes a week and walk around with plastic bags. I resigned from work coz of this as it was getting really disgusting spitting infront of my collegues and noone ever heard of a pregnant spitter! I dont think it will ever stop till after birth. I also cant imagine going through this and the terrible nausea again. I pray that this bub comes healthy and i'm done. Chewing on crushed ice helps a little while. My mum went through the same but my two sisters never had it. I feel for u all. Goodluck.
