I too suffered from these symptoms for a solid 3 years and it will spread eventually both hands and work its way all over your hands, its painfull and not nice for people to look at.

I did eventually find a solution called "Prevex Protectant cream" Believe it or not after 5 applications it cured it for the last 6 months and it worked fast. It can be bought in toronto at a shoppers drug mart over the counter, just ask someone about it.

Steve Banks

I have been struggling with this same condition (peeling thumbs and pointer fingers) for years. It's now constant all year round. It can be so painful.

I have aunts that suffer from the same thing. My grandmother suffered from it. So it's definitely got to be genetic. That I'm sure of.

It at least makes me feel better to know that there are others out there suffering from EXACTLY the same symtons. It's got to be a common affliction with a common cause ... most likely genetic.

Please, please if anyone has a solution please help.

This started about 10 years ago for me, I am 23yrs old now, and hoped with time that this would go away.
It started with only slight flaking and scaling which over the years began to spread slowly down my index finger. As of today, I am afflicted with periodic numbness in my fingers which is commonly followed by extreme sensitivity. The problem spread down my entire finger, to my middle finger, and my thumb on my dominant hand. The skin looks similar to a mild poison ivy rash before the small empty blisters appear. They travel to the surface of my skin, once they breach the surface all the skin around it begins to peel. The 'blisters' are dots of hard dead skin working their way to the top layer of skin, causing the area to swell mildly. Needless to say, when they run their course, my hands are raw and sometimes bleeding. Often my fingers throb with twinges of pain, like needles and burning. I no longer have cuticles on these fingers, though my nails look completely normal. This 'rash' only appears in the warm months, never in the winter. It can be triggered at anytime however by stress. No creams, moisturizers, steroid-based creams, allergy medications, etc, have helped. My dermatologist does not know what it is either. I am afraid because several people who work in close proximity to me have developed similar episodes just this year. When I cover the areas with bandaids it only expedites the peeling of the skin, but it does stop me from picking at myself.

I feel helpless like most of us here and hope that someday there will be a cure for this. If I find anything out, I will be sure to post. My sympathy for everyone experiencing this terrible ailment <3

Wow, I had this problem a few years back and the doctor gave me nail fungus medicine. Not sure that did any good, but the problem gradually went away. I assumed it might be from the medicine but I wasnt sure.

Then, last month it came back. I tried everything. I took something for awhile that was supposed to balance your yeast/bacteria levels. That didnt work, but it made me think of the posibility that my yeast level was way too high. So I took a potent suppliment of multi-strain probiotic bacteria that i purchased over the counter at a drug store. It worked amazingly! In only a day it was almost totally stopped and after another day, my skin was practically back to normal.

I dont know if it will help any of you, but I sure hope it does. It is an awful thing. Be advised, however, the killing of billions of yeast/fungi enmass, will cause a sudden increase in nervousness, anxiety and/or depression. This will pass in a day or so, but it may be very intense. I am glad it happen to be the weekend when i did this, so I could just stay in bed for a day or two. You might want to plan accordingly.

Can it be a really bad case of eczema? Try cortisone cream, that should fix it. It takes away the redness, itchiness and will moisten the skin.

I had it some time ago and the dr. recommended it. You can find it at any pharmacy.

I found it interesting that no one mentioned that it might be
Shingles. However, someone did mention that it might be a herpes virus, which is
of the same virus family as shingles and is brought on by stress.
I have in the last year or so been diagnosed with Shingles.
Many of the symptoms that all of you have described go along with having Shingles.
For example: 1) the pain that one has on one side of the body (left side for me)....
    I thought that I was having a heart attack before I was diagnosed as having shingles;
numbness or tingling in the extremities; itching of the skin (sometimes all over the body
causes me to feel as though I have something crawling on my skin), unexplained pain on
    parts of the body; etc.
    2) small bumps appearing on my face but not really any pus (but clear liquid) in them.
I can scratch them, they dry up and leave no scarring.
    3) I had a blister on the inside/roof of my mouth.....very painful; pain under my bridge...
it was later diagnosed as being shingles in my mouth. The pain that I had required me to take
VALACYCLOVIR 1GM tablets. This helped a great deal....but the pain, itching, etc. comes back
when I am under a lot of stress.
    4) I had a very dry spot (sharp as a razor blade) on my arm that turned into a bump.... it continued
to grow.....I put lysine cream (also good for the herpes virus) on it and it slowly dried even
more until one day it just fell off on its own.
I suspect that this was shingles also.
    5) For several weeks, I had crustiness behind my ears with a little weeping liquid coming from them
when I tried to remove the dried skin (what I thought was dried skin)..... When I let the liquid from
the crustiness get under my nails, I suspect that I may have caused the following:
    6) I have just recently started to have very dry skin around and under my fingernails....it does
not bleed when I remove the dried skin. Before the skin became so dry, I had an extreme case
of itching on my hand and around my fingernails/cuticles and on my fingernail bed at the front of my
nails. I intend to go to my doctor and see if this is shingles also. Nothing had changed in my life, other
than extreme STRESS .....which by the way causes or aggravates Shingles.

I am very convinced that the stress is the main cause of this....I am a teacher and was under a great deal
of stress when I developed the shingles in my mouth. I have noticed that when I get the symptoms it is
when and after I have extreme Stress.
I really believe that this is probably shingles because I am 61 years old and age is one of the things that is
    mentioned when I researched shingles.....the only problem I have is I don't
remember ever having chickenpox (Shingles are what lays in the body and attacks the nerve endings
after a person has had chickenpox.......thus, the reason for the numbness, tingling feeling that one gets).

I have the same problem with my left thumb: itchy, skin peeling, skin becoming hard, numbness. Everytime I wash dishes by hand, the skin starts to have whitish bubble, then breaks up, then the skin starts to peel and it spreads all over my thumb. I went to a Dermatologist, gave me some creams to apply, but nothing happened. The peeling continued. I went to another Dermatologist, same thing - gave me some creams to apply, and again, nothing happened. I went back to the first Dermatologist and complained that the creams they prescribed didn't work, so they gave me a stronger prescription...... and told me not to wet my finger too much. What I did was wear gloves everything I wash dishes or handling food or anything that will result in me washing my hands often. The prescription worked as long as I am very careful not to wet my hands, especially my left thumb, too much. The prescription: APEXICON CREAM! It will take some time before it takes effect but now, I only apply it every other day. Good luck!

My skin on my thumbs gets hard and thick and then 1 or 2 small white "blisters" form.

If they are itchy it may be something called pompholyx(sp?)

I ALSO SUFFER FROM DRY FLAKY SKIN ON FINGERS... USUALLY JUST ONE AT A TIME... HAVE TRACED IT TO "GLUTEN INTOLERANCE"... THIS MEANS NO EATING WHEAT, RYE, BARLEY, OATS... THIS IS HEREDITARY... MY MOTHER HAD IT, AND MY DAUGHTER ALSO HAS IT... NOT SO DIFFICULT TO CONTROL... DIET CONSIST MAINLY OF MEAT, VEGGIES, FRUIT, DAIRY... FORGET ALL THE PROCESSED FOODS, BREADS AND BAKE GOODS... WHEN I WATCH MY DIET, THE CONDITION WITH THE FINGERS GOES AWAY... WHEN I ENDULGE IN GLUTEN, THE FINGERS GET SORE AGAIN... CAN MAKE YOUR OWN BAKE GOODS BY USING SPECIAL GLUTEN FREE FLOURS... MANY RECIPES ON THE INTERNET.

You might want to get your thyroid levels checked. Both hypo and hyper thyroidism can cause peeling skin on the thumb and forefinger. It is an easy test (TSH Test is what you want) and it is important to check if you have this symptom (the peeling skin) because thyroid disease can cause many other problems and is easily fixable (hormone treatments)

I have this too.  Had it for over two years...searched the web...tried a lot of expensive creams, with no luck.  Then I had a really bad sunburn while I was in Hawaii and the locals recommended the Oils of Aloha Kukui Oil.  A four ounce bottle is around $15.  It worked really well on the sunburn.  Never thought about using on my fingers, had the bottle for over 6 mths before I read the label.  Then I read that it worked on excema and psoriasis.  So I tried it.  It's only been a few weeks, but I HAVE NOT had the peeling.  It's still not 100% but it's about 98%.  I haven't had them start to harden before peeling since using the oil once daily.  It's the BEST thing I've tried.  My fingers finally feel cured.  I never post to blogs...but I have to post this.  Hope it can help someone else.

The last two months the skin on the pads of my index fingers has gotten hard and leathery feeling. I bite at it and it peels off and feels soft again til the next morning.  What to do as it is scary
