This is a very late reply but you are extremely incorrect under normal circumstances, there is a very clever thing in our body called the blood brain barrier and very severe cases of infection will cause bacteraemia crossing and causing bacterial enchephalitis, although it is atrue S. pneumoniae, which can cause lung infections (normally easy to diagnostically classify through rusty sputum which can be foul smelling and also using a stethoscope you should hear wet crackling noises when taking deep breathes) is one of the main causes of meningitis, the fact that we are assuming he is immunocompetent and fairly well nourished, does not have HIV/AIDS we can rule out almost completely that the chances of him contracting non viral and non pneumococcal meningitis almost completely. Fear mongering people into seeking antibiotics is the very reason people overprescribe, then contract worse, resistant strains with higher MIC's because they dont finish courses or never needed them in the first place. Also it is good to note, the likelihood of bacterial sinus infection far lower than as viral infection. such as RSV. or infact almost every respiratory virus. infact in america the IDSA has stated that 90-98% is viral. So don't just tell him it is bacterial and that you need antibiotics because you are probably wrong, it isn't bacterial, the smelly phlegm is probably because you have some c**p down your throat. or dead neutrophils (which i would go into but this is getting a little long so it basically means you are fighting the infection so you wouldnt need antibiotics if you REALLY couldn't get them anyway). Also can i point out it is very naive to think that bacterial infection = need antibiotics.. how do you think we survived when we didnt have antibiotics produced in the 40's 50's and 60's like penecillin, amoxycillin, cephalexin or tetracycline. Our bodies are the greatest weapon against infection because we have evolved to tackle it through innate and adaptive responses.. Also if you want a good cheap treatment. Studies have found a dose of zinc every day (45mg max) reduces symptoms of viral and bacterial infection by 2 days and actively tackles viral infection through competitive inhibition of attachment proteins. what he needed was rest, tissues, lemsip, pseudophedrine maybe and some zinc lozenges.
this is a site intended to help people with their medical problems. keep your religious obsession & fanatcism out of it.
I've had sinusitis 3 times with an attendant sinus and chest infection & I am also tasting something in my mouth that continually tastes rotten as well. I almost died from it the first time. I am going to go to the allergist this week and beg them to do something to kill this off once and for all. I thought that when I had my sinus surgery it would rid me of this forever. It didn't and every time I get a cold now, it turns into a sinus infection. Has nothing to do with demons or religion. I am allergic to grasses, eucalyptis and 2 kinds of flowering trees.
I have had this sinus infection 5 times over the last 8 years. Over the years I have tried everything from anti bios to detox diets, it always seems to last about 20 days. I think around 20 days is just the time it lasts before you body fights it off! Mine has just today cleared once again, I found this site and read all the posts, interesting ideas! but most of all I am glad its not just me cursed with this crappy thing. Next time you get that horrid taste or smell, accept 3 weeks of nose blowing and so on until it goes away. best wishes. x

First of all, none of you even know if it is a "sinus infection," "Bronchitis," or a combination of both. The symptomatology for both can be somewhat similar, especially when one can be causative to the other. Just because the poster says it happens when he "blows his nose" or "coughs" does not necessarily mean that the infection itself is coming from the sinus. It's even entirely possible that it's neither but is in fact fungal, or perhaps the person is an I.V. drug user that has gotten the infection itself from an outside source altogether that has simply settled into either the Bronchi or the sinus cavity. (HA! Betcha all didn't know those two!)
Either way, the odds fall like this.
90% of these infections are viral in nature regardless of the "area infected."
10% are going to be caused by bacterial or fungal agents.
One fairly reliable way of determining this is by knowing that Viral infections will typically last less than ten days, while Bacterial or other infections will usually last longer.
Now, for those of you waiting for the patient to die of drain bamage, you are probably going to be a little bit disappointed with what I have to say next.
MORE LIKELY THAN NOT, THE INFECTION IS VIRAL AND WILL CLEAR UP ON IT'S OWN! (Remember the 90%?)
If an antibiotic is necessary, then most likely the infection has lasted longer than ten days and is bacterial in nature.
So MY opinion would be as follows.
..."Any time that you are experiencing health symptoms that you would not typically describe as "normal," or if you have any doubt at all as the the general overall health of your body, you should seek the advice of a physician or medical health professional."
NOW, I want to address the drain bamage argument! :)
First of all, I'd like to congratulate the "Encephalitis" survivor. :) (Hey, you said "brain" complications! Not the Meninges.) I'm betting that the next time you get a case of the sniffles you'll be right off to the already overcrowded ER won't you? I mean c'mon. You wouldn't want to wait a few days for that nasty old bug to build itself up any right? The brain's only a few inches away from your nose so you'd better hurry! I mean, it's not like 90% are going to be viral to begin with, and only require approximately 7 to 10 days of rest, plenty of fluids, proper nutrition, etc. for the infection to clear up on it's own! (http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/viral.html)
All sarcasm aside for a minute.
This post may be old, and I'm sure by now the person who asked the question to begin with more than likely fully recovered within a couple of days and has never been back. But unfortunately, Google's search bots (probably impressed with all of these extremely knowledgeable neuropathologists) have nonetheless seen fit to keep this page as the first hit for anyone entering "green nasty tasting mucus" in their search box.
So for those people, I've got to say this. GO! RUN! GET AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THESE PEOPLE BEFORE YOU CATCH YOURSELF A BRAIN COLD AND DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH FROM SNOTROT!

Lol
I will see what he says.
In the meantime, I have been trying the over the counter saline rinses.
But I have an appointment for the doctor anyway on Monday and I think you are right that is the best place to be.
Lol
I love it. Thank you!
You should try some hot tea with honey and lemon. I know because I suffer with sinus. If you have the bad smell drink a little lemon juice, I promise this works.
AMEN!!!! Agree totally
I started having similar problems 8 days ago, which I think came from nasal trauma. 2 events which preceded the Sinusitis and not caused by the common cold- 1. I inhaled burning toxins such as plastic as I burnt rubbish. Had small headache after that.
2. I was eating at the table the day after, I had a bit of a cough from smoking, started to cough with food in mouth, suppressed by closed mouth, some food and water blasted hard, out my nostrils.
Started with tooth and jaw aches, then head ache again, followed by cheekbone and behind nose ache on and off, they got worse, more consistent, dull and constant, all together on right side of my face. Noticed my mucous a day or 2 later, foul smelling and tasting, coming from my right nostril only. Reminded me of the smell I once got from my infected ingrown toenail, only now I can taste that smell, ugggh. I still wonder though is it bacterial or viral- does that same putrid smell come from the viral strain? This smelly discharge is much worse than the pains in my opinion. I took OTC "Sinutab"-Paracetamol 500mg, Psedoephedrine Hydrochloride 30mg. Will not fight infection however.
Yesterday, I took Panadol(paracetamol500mg) instead of Sinutab, because I wasnt blocked up, the fever came later on whilst my pains began to subside. I didnt go to doctor, thought I'd try to get through it and I cant really afford him at the moment. My mother is a nurse, asked her if she had any antibiotics(I seldom take antibiotics) for sinus infections. She gave me Augmentin(gsk)-Amoxicillin 500mg, Clavulanic Acid 125mg, which she had at home, lucky me.
Today Im feeling non feverish if just a little wolly headed. Barely a headache, still discharging smelly mucous but overall reckon Im on the mend, with the help of those antibiotics. But if Im feeling on the mend already, after 8 days, would that not mean that its the Viral strain? I hadnt felt as good til I took the antibiotics, unless they have some placebo effect and it is viral
