Why are you people taking someone else's answer to someone else's question do seriously?! Wow, the internet never ceases to amaze me. How about everybody just see a doctor, forums are never facts, they're full of opinions, attitudes, and sarcasm smh

First of all, amoxicillin is pretty much worthless for many people because bacteria is resistant (lets see an amox/clav study). So either the person did not have a bacterial infection that was sensitive to amoxicillin or they had a viral infection. Secondly, it's the viral infections that don't need antibiotics and resolve. If you have a bacterial infection for more than 2 weeks, you need an antibiotic!

Absolutely INCREDIBLY rare complications of sinus infections ... While encephalitis or meningitis are rare complications of sinusitis, pointing it out does not make the previous poster less correct. Sinus infections typically clear up within a week, and can be easily cured using saline flushes. Chill out a little; no need to go around insulting well-meaning folks.

Wow. I rarely get sick, but have had few bacterial infections, diagnosed by doctors, I successfully remedied at home. There are many ways to do this without antibiotics, as well as most healthy immune symptoms are more than equipped to fight on their own. I understand these rare, severe cases can happen, but not typically. The world is Beautiful, we all only get this ONE life, don't spend it being hateful to each other while hiding behind your screen :)

I know this old, I'm not a professional at anything relevant, just trying to help. I've had this problem at least once a year for the past 6, been to my regular doctor, never went to the ENT. What works best for me is something called "water therapy" mixed with antihistamines. Basically I drink two large glasses of water first thing in the morning, before brushing my teeth or anything, then take a Zyrtek or Claritin with breakfast about a half hour later or when my stomach feels ready (I have a sensitive stomach also). Then I just make sure I drink lots of fluids and eat healthy and if I keep my sugar intake down I can usually clear the smell up in a week or less. With antibiotic treatment I suffered with what I call "the smell of decomposing flesh" for over 3 months. My dog loved it... Yuk.
Also, sometimes this is accompanied with mucus in my lungs, for this I drink a small glass of carrot juice with a dash of cayenne pepper twice a day until the 2 liter bottle is gone, I notice an improvement in my breathing in the first two days.

I've tried the netti pot but my nose doesn't seem to allow a flow between nostrils.

They make a small lipstick sized inhaler that smells like Vicks which helps to cover the smell, sorry I don't know what it's called but they sell it near the nasal spray

Prescription flownase works great to relieve the pressure

My favorite pill form decongestant is mucinex, just make sure with any decongestants to use a saline spray, someone mentioned that otc spray has preservatives but to me that means I can keep it in my pocket or tool belt, desk, car, or whatever.

Moisture is key, keep hydrated and wash that stuff out as best you can. I think that's all the advice I can offer, good luck and to anyone that says to go to the doctor- I'm an adult and can think for myself.

Oh, one last thing, I was desperate I've time and poured hydrogen peroxide in my nose and sucked it back into my throat trying to clean it out. I think it might have helped some but was not worth it. I would recommend against it. It didn't seem to do any damage, just very uncomfortable.

Phenergan is antiemetic (nausea/vomiting).....not an antihistamine. Smh b

Please ignore this, a sinus infection will not go to your brain hahahahaha

I'll be sure to give my MEDICAL DOCTOR your expert opinion regarding antibiotic therapy before she writes the scripts. 3 wk infection, saline washes, antihistamines didn't work. So....ATB still not appropriate? Oh how the mighty fall. Be nice, not condescending

hi. for someone looking for REAL answers, what I've learned from MY OWN EXPERIENCES AND REASEARCH is that if your suffering from thick GREEN mucus with a foul taste antibotics ARE needed in order to clear up this kind of infection. The color GREEN IS a indication of a BACTERIAL INFECTION IN THE SINUS. Green is caused from your own white blood cells dieing. Often your own immunity loosing the battle with this specific type of bacterial infection. being BACTERIA AND NOT A VIRAL INFECTION, ANTIBOTICS ARE REQUIRED IN THIS INSTANCE. This type of infection if not treated in a timely manner can and will worsen. causing ears to become involved in the infection, as well as the pharynx, throat, and finally the lungs. I personally made the mistake of trying to " wait out" this kind of a infection and by the time I got to the doctor I required three shots (antibotic, antihistamine, and vitamin) then was given my perscriptions for ANTIBOTICS TWICE A DAY FOR 10 DAYS, a nose spray, a pro-botic because the bacteria was actually spreading into my intestine because of the mucus, and a antihistamine to help with pressure and headaches from the mucus. This is a great example of what can happen trying to " wait out" a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections can and WILL spread to other areas of your body if they are not taken care of with a ANTIBOTIC. This is because your immune system alone is usually NOT sufficient enough to fight off the BACTERIA it ends up spreading to other areas of the body such as ears, throat, stomach, and lungs. Having just gone through this myself, the BEST advice I can give from MY OWN EXPERIENCE is to visit your doctor at the BEGINNING of the infection so other areas of the body do not become involved Get a ANTIBOTIC to help your body fight the Bacterial infection and get well. I do hope this helps someone out. Trust me when I say, you don't want to go through what I did and have the bacteria spread to other areas of your body.Get help from your doctor and get the Bacterial infection cured up in the beginning.

Thank you for this answer. I have been sick for two months with a sinus infection and on meds twice. It feels like it is almost gone and I really don't want to go to the doctor again. I found this reassuring.

Don't do nothijg, but get a Neti pot and flush your sinuses with it. It helped me. Some people say to put probiotics in the solution. I didn't do that, butyou infection was not severe.
