Hello there!
I've been dealing with either an allergy or intolerance with avocado ever since I can remember. Always, within a minute or two after taking a bite of avocado or guacamole I start gagging and vomit. I react the same way with cantelope too. Might there be anything that can be mixed in with the avocado to keep me from expelling? I found one restaurant that had guacamole that I could eat without getting sick (it's now closed). Any ideas?
Omg SAME. Happened to me twice. Once last year and once just now. I thought it was the egg on my avocado toast the first time it happened but now I know it's the avocado itself. I have guac before with no problem through. I agree with everyone else must be the salt and lime juice that kept me from getting sick before.
That's so weird, I gave was the avocado and cantaloupe too. Although I find them very tasty, they still make me sick.

I have also always wondered if they are GMOS. I grew up eating natural foods and when I moved to USA i developed this reaction to avocado like everyone else is saying here
I didn't even know that avocado allergy is a thing until I started vomiting a few weeks back. My husband told me that I got food poisoning from a meat we were eating at time but, after vomiting repeated two times in next seven days, I started suspecting at avocado. We are using it as salad and it is delicious, I must say. To test my theory, I washed one avocado and ate it raw. In a matter of minutes, my head was all over toilet seat.
I'll definitely try your tip. If it works, it will be great. If not, ah, what to say, someone can completely exclude avocado from meals.
I'm the same: avocado, papaya, canteloupe, watermelon. Mostly fine when I make guac and add lots of lime and some salt. I don't have the same reaction to my tree at home in the Caribbean. Eating imported avocados always induces vomiting. I think it must have to do with the source and the fertilisers. I don't think it's an allergic reaction per se as I haven't noticed any swelling or scratching.
Anyone have luck with organic produce?
Avocados make me gag as well! I don’t particularly like the taste (probably because my body rejects the food before I put it in my mouth) but it also gives me a stomach ache. Some avocado had snuck into my food tonight and the pain is unreal. This has happened before so I knew it was the avocado. I also have oral allergy syndrome when it comes to peaches, kiwis, apples (anything birch pollen really) so I’m not sure if there is any kind of connection between the two.

Yeah it's really weird. If I have avocados plain it makes me gag but if it has salt on it and other seasonings like guacamole I'm ok.
You should try to squeeze and some lemon or lime on it! It helps me!
3 things instantly trigger my gag reflex. Avocado or banana with the slightest tinge of brown and sometimes eggplant. To add to this, I travel internationally quite a bit, and will eat anything from grasshoppers to rattlesnake. I eat plenty of "mushy" things, so I really can't nail down the issue.
I am glad I found this blog. I too have problems eating avocado. The moment it touches my tongue I would vomit sometime for 5 minutes non-stop. I have not eaten it for 10 year. Between that time I would try it and the same thing happen. I went to my country Jamaica and I eat a whole avocado and nothing happened. I firmly believe that it is the insecticide they spray it with. No one does that in Jamaica.I really miss eating it. I grew up eating avocado everyday as long as it is in season.
I have the same "allergy" to Avocado and Watermelon !!! I wonder what these two fruits have in common that makes us sick.
For what it's worth, if adding salt/lime prevents it the reaction then it must have something to do with the electrolytes balance in your stomach. When I was pregnant drinking plain water would make me puke for the same reason, I could only keep down (sugar free) Gatorade or water with lemon juice in it. Even not pregnant though, avacados and cantaloupe could cause the same feeling, but similarly alleviated by consuming something salty.
Avacados, cantaloupe, and even watermelon or papaya to a lesser degree have a significantly higher ratio of potassium to sodium, which may explain the upset stomach if you don't intake enough salt to balance it out. A true allergy may manifest similarly so I'm not sure how to pick them apart unless you have been tested and confirmed not allergic but still have said symptoms.
I have the same allergy! I immediately regurgitate any type of melon and avocado. It’s so weird. My doctor just said stop eating them.
