Im having this problem with the cough and it happening worse on lying down.  Its getting more problematic.  I'm 71.  I think  I'll just put up with it after reading the posts.  No point going through all the tests and medication to end up worse or no better.  Thanks everyone.

I am having the same thing only when my heart starts to flutter it feels like it is going up in to my throat and then I have to cough and the flutter kind of goes away for a little while and it seems to be worse during the day and not so much at night.

I have the exact same symptoms which is what brought me to this page. I have actually been better off caffeine and coffee but its not gone away. It does actually get worse lying down which is really surprising. At one time my heat was beating strong for two beats and missing the third for some time and the next day missing the fourth beat or so weak I couldn't feel it. I had an appointment for an ecg and had visitors and forgot it. I have another appointment for next week. I'm sure nothing will show. Its good to know so many share the same problem. A problem shared is a problem halved. X Angela

Have you tried chewing gum for the coughing? I've just started having this problem within the last 3-4 weeks. Wriggley's gum helps with the coughing and I've started on beta blockers.

If you have the same symptoms, please let's make a group about it on facebook or something as I do too have the same symptoms and so in this way we could support each other.

I recently been really sick. Thought it was the flu, and/or medications I was taking. Quit my meds, 10 days or so later went to urgent care. They said I have ear infection and bronchitis and possibly another cold/flu set it off. Gave me inhailer and ear drops. Now, i am getting palputations and heart hurts then I cough. Hurts pretty bad.

I am also 42yo. I have heart flutters which causes me to have a slight cough. It does not happen often but, more than I would like. Some weeks it's worse than others and, I do not drink a lot of caffeine, drink or smoke nor do I do any drugs (recreational, prescribed) Sometimes I must take over the counter such as Advil or migraine medication. I know there is caffeine in the migraine meds but, I don't get the flutters when I take it. It is very random and, will happen sitting up, laying down or standing.

I am a 29yr old male, I have had this for as long back as i remember, even back in highschool. Its been about the same intensity, usually just the one early beat followed by the next 'thud', the 'thud's vary in intensity. Occasionaly i will feel a couple run together in a flutter sensation, where it feels as if my heart is struggling to pump blood out and these ones tend to cause me to cough every time.  Only sometimes will i need to cough after the 'thuds'

Someone on the first page said hers was Premature atrial heart contractions, and when i read the symptoms its exactly what i get.

One of the casuses that would make these worse is being tired, which would make sense why so many people feel them at night, and lying down - because after a long hard day you lay down to sleep..

One of the other causes is caffiene - which I (like most people) tend to ingest more of before i go to the gym, or when i need energy. So, yes, i feel them more commonly on nights i have been to the gym and am now over caffinated and tired lol

They did say Stress will make these worse, which kinda sucks because once you have one and notice it, it starts to stress you out by worrying if its serious or not and that will only make it more likely that you will have more and more..

I am so happy that i found this, its good to no longer feel alone and that girl on page one who mentioned Premature atrial heart contractions has really put my mind at ease.

Sucks when it happens.. its still scary, but letting it bother you seems like it only makes them more frequent.

Best of luck to everyone!

I am so scared, I went to the doctor this afternoon because the palpitations were countinuosly for two days, and when I was there, my palpitations stopped, so I was devastated, the doctor couldn't do anything , and was careless about this matter.
now I am at home and I am coughing like hell

I have had this issue and found the following explanation. I thought it may be possie since I was previously on hctz(water pill) for high bp after I had my babies. Palpitations are irregular beatings of the heart. Causes of palpitations may be inconsequential or serious, ranging from anxiety, fear, overexertion, caffeine or nicotine intake, emphysema, cancer, asthma or heart disease. Palpitations with coughing may indicate a more serious heart disorder, such as coronary heart disease or myocardial infarction. Patients with chronic heart palpitations may develop an accompanying cough due to fluid retention from insufficient blood flow. A medical professional should be consulted for all bouts of palpitations and coughing, especially if followed by chest pain, difficulty breathing or blood-tinged mucus.
