heartbeat in ear

I have a heart beat sound in my right ear that I can feel pulsating at times. It started as a whooshing sound so I went to my family Dr. that said it was an ear infection. He gave me an antibiotic after it only got worse and turned into a heart beat sound that I can hear at night. I went to an ent and a neurosurgeon who sent me for a cat scan and even a cerebral angiogram which also came back negative. This drives me crazy!

:( I've been having the pulse in my ears for about two weeks now...I've had it before but it was a while ago...I assumed it was stress but if it's not then it makes me stressed.I thought maybe my blood pressure was sky high but much to my surprise it wasn't..The doctor looked in my ear and said everything looked fine and whe I asked her what it could be I didn't get a solid response...It's driving me crazy especially at night when I'm trying to sleep. When I stand up or stretch or yawn it gets really loud and sometimes accompanies a slight headache but it goes away..I'm losing sleep because of it.

I had this last year along with the flu. Turns out that I had pseudotumor cerebri - (fake tumor) - your body's first defense is to save the brain..... so it created an abundance of fluid in my skull. They put me on Diamox and it relieved the pressure and I got better. They said most women who get this are females between 25 - 40 and white. After going to Johns Hopkins, they finally determined it was the daily acne medicine (tetracylcine type) that caused the pseudotumor. Just a thought...

This is a very interesting thread. All ages and reasons for the heart beat in the ear(s). I'm not sure when mine started, left ear only. In the last 3 or 4 months, I think. It doesn't drive me crazy, but sure does worry me. My GP was worried about it but is sending me to an ear, nose and throat specialist first. I thought maybe it started after I had gotten very sick with diahrea in Las Vegas. I did notice today when I got a little upset over something that it was louder. If I have to live with it I will do so peacefully if I know that there isn't something dangerous going on. BUT, I'm taking the advice from the person who suggested a chiropractor. My Chiro cures everything. I never thought about telling him about this. I'll get back in a few weeks and post any results.

my mother is suffering from this pulse beating in her head.
it started after she had a tooth extracted.
it is sometimes accompanied by headaches.
she has had CT and MRI both normal, BP is normal
does anyone have an answer?
I've had this problem a long time as well, not sure how long but over 5 years anyway.
I only hear the heart beat sound if I sleep on my side and press my ear down on the pillow. I can only fall asleep on my side which makes it a bit annoying, I end up having to sleep on my arm so my ear is not pressed down but my head is still supported.
I never knew this condiition was so serious, I'll book an appointment with my GP now since its got me worried.
I've had whooshing in my ear for almost 2 months now. It's just about driving me mad. At first my ear was also plugged up really bad so I went to get it flushed out but then it still wooshed. So I went back to the doctor and got some antibiotics.(It looked like an ear infection) I'm almost done those and still it's whooshing away. It's not nearly as loud as it was though or am I just getting used to it???? When I press down a certain spot on my neck I can't hear it but then I feel it pounding in my head!(which is worse) also when I tilt my head to the right side it will stop(but again head pounding) what the heck is this????????
That descibes me almost to a T! I can hear my pusle in my left ear, and this has been going on for almost 3 years. It is highly annoying!! I too can press on my neck on the left side - my husband just looks at me like I am crazy, but if I want to listen to something really well (like to see if the baby is crying) I have to! The noise does not go away if I tilt my head on either side, and it is still there if I press my tongue on the roof of my mouth. It never, never, never goes away. I saw a doctor in California right after it started, and he just blew me off saying the same thing about "sometimes people can hear their pulse...blah blah blah".... Well, just recently (like two days ago) I noticed I can actually see my pulse in my left wrist...on the outside - opposite side where they tell you to feel for your pulse under your thumb. So, what the heck is going on?!
I do have an under active thyriod, but I have had that for 16 years. My blood pressure is high normal.
i also have an underactive thyroid, but I have had that for 16 tears.
It's great to find this forum. I'm male 39 years old. About 2 years ago I started hearing my pulse in my left ear. It was mild but I went to a doctor and had an MRI and it was normal. I just learned to live with it because it wasn't that bad. Then just the other night for Valentine's day my wife and I were out for a nice romantic dinner and I had a cocktail, wine, and then champagne. Needless to say my blood was pumping hard and my face was red. Well the next morning I woke up and the pulse was a lot louder and constant!! I remember as a college student when I would drink a lot I would hear my pulse in both ears. But then it would go away once I was sober. It also gets louder when I bend down and the blood rushes to my head. I'll go to see a doctor again. But after reading everything here I'm thinking I'll just have to live with it. It's not driving me crazy yet but I could see how it could. It's only been two days. I liked what the one person said about how eventually it will go away like not seeing your nose. My dad had it bad and it was driving him crazy. His was from world war II when a bomb exploded near him.
It's good to hear from everyone. I have had whooshing that is in synch. with my heartbeat for 9 months (called pulsatile tinnitus). It just started out of the blue and it is only in my right ear. I saw my primary dr. and an ENT. The ENT referred me for an MRI and an MRA. The MRA was to check for a vascular abnormality (an AVM) and theMRI checked for something structural, like a tumor. Both were clear, as were blood tests for thyroid and anemia.
He then punctured a hole in my eardrum to see if there was any fluid in there that he couldn't see...NOPE! Now I have a hole (which is healing ) in my ear and still whooshing! I feel much like many of you that sometimes it is the anxiety that there is something wrong and not knowing what it is that is more annoying than the actual sound.
Mine, too, is worse at night because that is when my house is quietest. I have tried sleeping with a white noise machine to help drown out the sound and that does seem to help.
My dr. referred me to a neurologist, but since this is my only symptom, I"m going to try to just live with it and stop chasing down an answer for now. IF I develop other symptoms or it worsens, I'll see a neurologist, but I think it might just be something to learn to live with for now.
And to reply to Leenamba....mine seems worse if I've had a drink of alcohol too. I wonder if it's because alcohol dilates your blood vessels so that the blood flows through them easier? OR, it's possible that the alcohol makes my sleep lighter so I waken easier to hear the whooshing.
Good Luck everyone! Even though my testing results were negative, I do suggest that everyone gets checked out by a physician.

I have had this pounding/purring, or almost a motor noise in my left ear off and on for about six months now. It seems to be a lot worse lately, and especially at night. It is so loud that it scares me.
I hope it is just an ear infection, but I recently figured out that the acne medication that I've been on for eight months, or thereabouts, causes tumors in test mice (Aldactone). I might have been taking too much because I figured it could only help. I should have researched it first.
Well, just thought I'd write.

I think anyone who has this should get a complete checkup from their doctor. I haven't yet. But I find out now that I have very high blood pressure.(you'd think a doctor would find this out) This could be part of the problem!! Don't put up with these doctors looking in your ears for 2 seconds and saying you have whatever problem that they guess and rush you out of the room. I'm really beginning to hate doctors!!!I've had this heartbeat in ear/pulsatile tinnitus problem going on 4 months now so far it's not gone away. >;)
WOW! I was starting to think that I was alone with this whooshing sound. Mine started in Dec 2005. I was 21 yrs old. A number of things was going on in my life that may have caused it ??? Stress- my mother was sick with cancer and passed away that same mongt, weightgain, I even wondered if Ortho Evra the birth control patch may have had something to do with it.
I have been to numerous doctors, and the ENT. They were afraid that it was an anearism or tumor but nothing has turned up. I have had hearing test, MRI's , and CT scans of the neck, head and brain area. Everything turned out normal. The ENT wanted me to go to Charlotte to another ENT but I figured why bother?
I have lost almost 15 pounds. I plan to lose about 20 more and if the noise doesnt stop maybe then I will go back to the doctor. My OB-GYN suggested that maybe because of my sudden weight gain that my carodoid artery was being pressed against my eardrum. So maybe, and hopefully she is right. I explain the noise as sounding like an ultrasound.
Anyway if anyone ever does come to some kind of conclusion about this or has anything to add please email me. _[removed]_ THANKS AND GOOD LUCK!
I am so glad i found this forum! I have had this whooshing sound in my left hear(sychronized to my heart rate) for about 2 months now. Mostly at night and when i have to strain. But it doesn't do it all of the time anymore. I have noticed when i am really tired or my heart rate goes up it is worse. Well i went to the dr. for this, ear looked cloudy and went on antibiotics. This did not help. I also have a knot on my neck right behind where your jaw squares off and have gotten it looked at and tested(went to my ENT). Turns out it is my parotid gland and it is mildly full. Nothing else significant in that area(had a ct scan and u/s). But they did find that i may have a under actice thyroid. So i am getting blood work in a few days. That would almost explain everything! Major wt. gain, sooooo exhausted, mood changes, dry coarse hair-you name it, i've got it. So wondering if this has anything to do with my thyroid as well? or my parotid gland? Before i found this the only info i was finding is that it could be an anuerysm(spelling?) So that scared me to death! I am just so glad that i am not alone in this! I will let you all know when i get my blood work back. If the whooshing sound doesn't let up soon i will seek further help. Anyone else ever figure out what is going on with your whooshing sound?
