I have a heart beat sound in my right ear that I can feel pulsating at times. It started as a whooshing sound so I went to my family Dr. that said it was an ear infection. He gave me an antibiotic after it only got worse and turned into a heart beat sound that I can hear at night. I went to an ent and a neurosurgeon who sent me for a cat scan and even a cerebral angiogram which also came back negative. This drives me crazy!

I have recently been to the dr. for a similar problem. They said I might have increased intracranial pressure. They said that this sometimes is accompanied by visual problems. (Which I do not have at this time). This sounds like what you might have. The recommended remedy is taking a strong dieretic to get rid of excessive fluid. I suggest you see a dr. asap.
I have had this problem for 4 months now. I went jogging while I had a cold, in the freezing cold. I woke up the next day with my right ear plugged and hearing my heart beat very loud. I went to the GP and he put me on some ear drops which didn't work. The plugged feeling went away but the heart thumping, ringing and swooshing are so annoying. I've been to the ENT 4 times now. Antibiotics didn't work. They ran hearing tests, tumors tests, you name it. My hearing is a tad less in that ear but not too noticable. The last time I went, he pearced a small hole in my ear drum to see if equalizing pressure would help any. Now that the hole is mended, I still have the same conditions. He suggested I wait it out for a while and if nothing changes than run some mri/mra's. I did lose 20 pounds in the last 9 months and have been excersizing every week, wonder if that has anything to do with it. I have to admit, hearing my heart beat at nights some days makes me grateful to be alive ;-)
I HAVE THE HEARTBEAT NOISE IN MY EAR. IT STARTED 3 MONTHS AGO. I HAVE HAD TEST AFTER TEST. FRIDAY I AM HAVING AN ANGIOGRAM. WELL LET YOU KNOW THE HOW IT GOES.
"I hate peas" and "17 year old Orange" ha haha...thanks for your updates.
I would like to know what medicine you were given by your doctors that has helped you.
I have never had allergies or sinus issues but 3 weeks ago I felt like maybe I had a sinus head thing going on and it would go away. Just felt pressure in my head, but looked and felt normal otherwise. Then I started getting dizzy and my vision seemed blurred. I'd have to stop and get my balance back. ...nothing major but I though ok, this is due to the sinus infection affecting my inner ear. Now in week three I have the sound of my heart beat in my ear, usually at night and in the morning. It's driving my nuts. I feel simply like I have an inner ear infection and some sinus pressure.
I went to an ENT yesterday and in 3 minutes and one yawn from him later he diagnosed some really horiffic things. I've searched them on the web and they really don't seem to be relevant to me. Come on - water on the brain?! All that because I couldn't pop my ears in his office.
SO - I am going to another doctor tomorrow. I have two sets of doctors I'm sad to say. One that in from my UHC PPO plan and the others that do not accept insurance and you have to pay cash. I have had the best service from the ones I pay in cash and they spend more time with me explaining things. So, I'm hoping it is what my gut is saying...and PEAS and ORANGE had...just an inner ear infection even though the 3 minutue doctor said my ears looked fine.
Will keep you posted. My ear feels like it is loosening up and going to POP which I hope will make the noise go away in my ear. I'm tired of hearing the pulse of my heart! I'm taking Sudafed HEAVY sinus meds.
What is the problem with these doctors. Just cause you hear your heartbeat in your ear does not mean the problem is with your ears!!!! Have they checked your blood pressure or done blood tests?? Checked the carotid arteries for stenosis???? I have a bad feeling my carotid artery is blocked and this is why I hear my heartbeat. I have high blood pressure and that is one of the things that can cause that. But I also have a thyroid problem so what's the deal here?!!? Oh well if my blood pressure goes down and I still have this racket in my head then I really do think it's the carotid artery that is blocked. But how can this be, I'm only 32????? o.O
Just yesterday evening I began hearing a very rapid wooshing sound in my right ear. The wooshing pulses matched my heartbeat. Over the past few weeks I have been experiencing very painful migraines with large pulsing temples. Also within the same time frame my teeth have become extremely temperature sensitive, especially to cold. Anyone else experience the sensitivity to cold? Does anyone think these symptoms might be related or something? I havent been to a gp; but, i'm going tomorrow. %-)
Yes! I'm so happy to know that I'm not alone here. I'm very frustrated right now. I have been having headaches for about a month and a half now. NO dizziness or visual problems. A handful of those headaches were so awful, they could be classified as migraines. On March 13th I fell in the bathtub. I didn't hit my head that I know of. I didn't black out. I just don't know if I hit my head as my left side was hurting so badly and I was stunned. The next day I started getting bad pain behind my right ear. I thought that perhaps I hit my head. Then on Tuesday the 20th, I started getting this rhythmic whoosh whoosh, whoosh whoosh sound in my left ear. I don't believe this is related to any fall. It's a constant sound. Louder at night when there is no noise to distract me. It's not painful but it kinda feels cloudy on that side? I can't explain it. Went to the doctor Friday the 23rd. They said there was alot of fluid in my right ear (which is fine) but nothing wrong in my left ear. Sent me for a CT scan Tuesday the 27th. Those results came back today NEGATIVE and I'm so upset that my Dr's office next course of action is to prescribe me Antivert which is nothing more than Dramamine. Antivert is used for dizziness, nausea, motion sickness, vertigo. None of which I have. During times of my worst headache I get nausea. But I have never vomited. I'm so upset that nothing more was said to be done. It was a receptionist who called me. I asked to speak to the Dr. and won't be able to do that til Monday. I read all these horrible things about AVM's and Aneurysms and frankly I'm scared! I want an MRI. I want a neurologist or a hearing dr. to have a look. But I just wanted to mention after reading the post above mine... that my teeth have also been aching for days and I didn't really have a reason for that! So now I'm wondering what's going on. I'm gonna mention that to the Dr. when I talk to her. What I hate the most is how many times the Dr. tells me to "stay off the internet". As if EVERYTHING on here is fake. I would rather read first hand accounts from patients who have been thru something than be in the dark popping my "DRAMAMINE" *sigh*
The last week of Dec 06, I has a severe headache that caused even the teeth I had pulled to ache. The pain subsided after 3 days, but headache remained constant for the next 3 weeks. It was the middle of Jan when I was woken in the middle of the night by pulsing in my right ear that matched my heart beat. Soon after I began having cluster migraines. My family Doctor sent me to a Headache Specialist who did a MRI. This showed no problems. I quit taking a drug I had began taking in December for cholesterol. The migraines quit, the pulsing didn't. Mid Feb 07, my right eye became reactive to bright sunlight and glare off the snow. I suffered double vision in that eye, dimed vision and flashing and flickering colors. Very wierd. Meanwhile, my thinking was getting foggy, I became constantly tired and felt my head pressurize at times, especially when lying down which increased the pulsing noise. The eye problem sent me to an ophthalmologist who discovered that I had very poor blood circulation to my right eye as the cause of my eye problem. My Doctor then ordered a Ultrasound of my carotid atreries and a MRA. The results sent me to a Interventional Neurology Specialist, who on Mar 23, 07 did a emergency angioplast to repair a psuedo-aneurysm and 99.9% blockage of my right caratid artery. That Doctor and his staff saved my life. I was very, very lucky. They said this psuedo-aneurysm was caused by trauma. Since I had not recieved any blows to my head in recent years, it was probably due severve coughing cause by upper respiratory infection I had in Dec, 06. The pulsing and eye problems are gone, my mind is clear and I feel extremely energized. I can still have problems from the blocked artery. Take the pulsing noise serious until you find what the cause is. Especially if you have other symptoms.
My father has suffered from nighttime sounds of blood rushing in his ears, and claims that his doctor's recommendation to practice breathing exercises for his shallow breathing has significantly reduced the noise. He practices breathing exercises using a volumetric exerciser, and believes that the improved oxygen supply to his brain as a result has lessened his brain's demand for blood flow at night, thereby reducing the blood pressure in arteries supplying the brain. Whether this is a placebo effect or not, it's working for him.
I've been having the same heart beating sound in my ear.. pretty similar to what everyones described.. but also.. i've been getting headaches that are quite different from the usual.. these headaches make it feel like my brain is on fire.. it feels like a strong burning sensation.. and its in different regions all over my head.. ill be going to the ent next week.. but any help would be appreciated..
Wow, Im surprised that Im not the only one experiencing this problem. A few weeks ago I noticed a swoosh in both of my ears. It felt very strange, but didnt last. Just swoosh and then nothing. Since then I feel like a pressure in my left ear. But last nite was so weird, when I could hear my heartbeat, loud and clear in my left ear only.
I have a heart problem and am hoping that is not a cause. I also have very sudden dizzy spells which come and go so fast you wonder if you imagined it. And sometimes I feel like I walked crooked. But again its quick.
I feel very light headed way too much of the time. But had an echo yesterday and will be seeing a cardiologist in a week for the results. I will ask him about the ear problem and the rest of the stuff Ive been experiencing.
Ive been thinking its heart related, but maybe its all inner ear related.
Im not happy others are experiencing this sensation, but feel perhaps it will be ok. I have normal ringing that gets on my nerves, but the heartbeat so strong really bothered me. It seems ok today.
I also have had this problem for over 2 years. It started as a whooshing sound when I would bend down or move certain ways. Now it is worse. I can actually feel the heartbeat in my ear especially when I exert myself or get stressed. Smoking absolutely made it unbearable so of course I quit. I did go to an ent specialist and did all the tests but nothing showed up. Now I actually feel a constant pressure in the ear. It's very annoying. I heard about a friend who had the same problem and had to have surgery on her jugular vein - she had a benign tumor.
Well, this has been very helpful.
Ive been very susceptible to ear infections all my life. Ive had some pretty severe ones early in life.
Never had that noise until lately tho.
I KNOW I cant take showers or swim without earplugs, but I took a shower anyway, got a ton of water in my ear that I couldnt get out for a couple days, and sure enough, about a week later I had an ear infection. A few days later that noise started. Its very irregular and has been getting less and less over the last week so hopefully its clearing up, but I may run to the doc on monday and see about something to take for it.
