I have a heart beat sound in my right ear that I can feel pulsating at times. It started as a whooshing sound so I went to my family Dr. that said it was an ear infection. He gave me an antibiotic after it only got worse and turned into a heart beat sound that I can hear at night. I went to an ent and a neurosurgeon who sent me for a cat scan and even a cerebral angiogram which also came back negative. This drives me crazy!

I wanted to share that I had the same problem for only 2 days B4 having a stroke. I am 42. The sound in my left ear was the blood squeezing thru what was still in tact of my cartoid artery. I don't know how it became torn and had no pain until after the stroke while I was in the hospital & it was just a feeling not really even pain. The stroke came on from a blood clot that formed when the torn artery was healing. If not for the stroke I never would have known.

I know this post is kinda of old but whatever. This could be a torn blood vessel in head l, not to alarm anyone but should be checked out by a doctor with a special stephescope (don’t know how to spell that word) if the doctor can hear it too then it defffinately needs to be checked out. this can lead to stroke so gbu. If you can get this diagnosed before that happeneds though, I believe there’s a surgery that can fix the torn vessel. Hoped this helped.

Husband started experiencing this condition, about drove him up the wall. Had a ultrasound of arteries in neck, but test came up negative. Doctors now referring him to ear's, throat and nose doctor, would be nice to get a answer....
Look up pulsatile tinnitus.
I’m an audiologist and it sounds like you may have cochlear Ménière’s disease. If it was vestibular you would also have vertigo. Controlling your salt intake and caffeine might help you some
I've noticed for a long time that my left ear doesn't hear as well as my right. 10 nights ago i noticed a sound that wasn't familiar. I sat up late in bed wondering if it was the sound of the train in the distance, nope...rain?, nope...i couldn't place the sound so i went back to sleep. Next day I bent down to put groceries on bottom shelf of my refrigerator and a loud noice and strong pressure suddenly occurred in my left ear, when i stood up and talked it sounded like i was speaking into a microphone, then a very loud whooshing sound followed...the sound softened as the day progressed but did not stop, fast forward 3 -4 days, saw an ENT doc, they did an extensive hearing test, confirming that i have lost substantial amount of hearing in that ear. Given my symptoms and the test the doctor prescribed steroids for 3 weeks (ugh), he says i ("probably") have a virus in that ear, and the steroids should stop the inflammation and allow any infection of liquid to drain thereafter. I'm really nervous because I can hear my heartbeat and when i put my hand to the vein in my neck where you can feel the beat of the heart...it matches the beating sound in my ear. I did have a blood test before they prescribed the steroids, and they took a blood pressure test, i've never had high blood pressure. Needless to say i'm scared because i'm not convinced I have been properly diagnosed. I am going to get blood tests for allergies, which i have done off and on for years. I have also been off of gluten/wheat for 7-8 years. I have 3 children, 1 that has special needs. I really can't afford to have any serious health complications....
any update on your husbands condition?
I have the same loud heartbeat in my right ear. It gets worse when I get up from bed or reclining. Or any exercise whatsoever. I was diagnosed with a regurgitating tricuspid heart valve. My cardiologist found it by doing an ultrasound of my heart. It's just something I have to live with unless the tear in my valve gets worse.S

I've found many of these comments quite interesting and enlightening. I too have experienced hearing pulsations over the years. Some have been related to heart and blood flow sounds. But I have also experienced a different "pulsation" which did not coincide with my heart pulse. I had been encouraged by my GP to take calcium supplements. It was only some time later when I began hearing strange pulsations. Sometimes magnesium supplements and potassium supplements would cause the pulsations to stop. I came to the realization that the supplements were causing some kind of mineral imbalance. So, I finally stopped the supplements and got my needed calcium from drinking milk. Since I did that, those pulsations are gone for good. I later learned that there is something called the "third pulse".. something relatively newly discovered. I post this information for those who may be experiencing something different than the vascular related pulsations.
