I have just read all your posts and still i am unsure what is wrong with me. my doctor doesn't know either, all I can say is that i have had this pulsing in my left ear for as long as i can remember, lets just say that its been constant for at least 15 years and probably longer. just recently it seems to be getting worse, some days I can stick my finger in my ear, have a good rake around and my ear will feel wet for an hour or two. does this mean that there is a build up of fluid in my ear and occasionally it leaks out ?. I have got to a point where i don't think it will go away on its own and probably will get worse over time. I will go see my doctor again and demand he look deeper into it. I don't get dizzy spells, I dont lose my vision, I don't get flemmy. Right now I have a pain in my ear and a pulsing to go with it.
any help is much appreciated.

in William Shatner's most recent book he mentioned that he experienced tinnitus and what "cured" him was he had to listen to some device that played a tone into his ear that "canceled" it out. after a while he didn't need it anymore. some of what you seem to be hearing does seem to sound like hyper awareness of your own pulse.
look up Sharry Edwards and maybe Tomatis therapy?
I have an occasional annoying "clicking" sound happening.

DAVF and AVM, these are malformations of arteries and veins in the dura matter of the brain, The only way to test for them is to have a Angiogram performed..

I'm back again. I saw my ENT after the neurologist, and the ENT was quick to say it's not Meniere's, but he didn't know what it was and I'd just have to deal with it. Two years now I've heard the sound like blood rushing in my left year. I see someone has posted a new entry stating he/she has that sound, as well as jaw pain and headaches, the light-headedness when you stand, hearing difference from ear to ear, and even your jaw popping out. I have several of these symptoms. My last visit to the ENT left me utterly hopeless. I just sat and cried when I got to my car. He mentioned William Shatner and his biofeedback method, and I laughed at that. That's not my problem. I don't have what they call Tinnitus. It's not ringing. I hear a watered down heartbeat.
So here's what I've deduced: I clench my teeth while I sleep and sometimes during the day, especially when I'm stressed. I have a lot of tightness in my jaw, I think because of that. Even the ENT said there was something "not right" with my jaw. So I have my chiropractor adjust my jaw once a month or so, and he also got me a mouth guard I wear every other night or so (it's called "Sleep Right Rx" and it's not terribly bulky and adjustable, and cost me $50), which relaxes my jaw and I've noticed a reduction in the noise. Also, I sleep on my left side, so I think having my head turned all night causes sore muscles in my neck. (I sleep on my left to quiet the noise in my ear so I CAN sleep!). I came to this conclusion one day when I had an annoying headache, my jaw was sore, and the noise almost unbearable. I accidentally cracked my jaw, and I felt a bit better. That night I slept with the guard (I hadn't been using it for while) and the next day it all felt 90% better. My jaw was a bit looser, and the noise much more quiet. If you haven't tried a chiropractor yet, try one.
As for DAVF and AVM, I think I did read about that along the way and I seem to recall it not fitting my symptoms. I will be looking into it again to be sure. This is honestly THE most frustrating thing in the world. And having no answers only increases the frustration. My ENT has tinnitus, and he tries to sympathize with me, but I'm not buying it. It's not the same and like I asked him, why did it just start one day while I was sitting there? My next step, I think, will be an orthodontist to see if there is anything I can do about my tight jaw because I still hear the noise, it's just softer, plus I still have a tight jaw. I hope this helps someone else!

Have any of you had Thyroid testing done? If not I suggest doing so.
I have the same problem since giving birth to my son 3 years ago. I've seen an ear, nose, throat doctor and he said I had a major sinus infection (which I was completely unaware of). I took antibiotics for that but I still hear my pulse!!!! Before doing an MRI and another cat scan I'm seeing an endocrinologist for my thyroid.
With Hypo Thyroid disease (which many women get after pregnancy) you could have sinus infections a lot, fatigue, irritability but also VENOUS hum. That would explain why when pushing on the neck vein (Jugular) the sound softens. Check it out.

Mine started 2 days ago and its already been driving me nuts. I got really worried at first because I had nooooo idea what it could be. It seems like a lot of people are having these issues but y hasn't anyone done anything about this? It seems to be a pretty serious issue that needs to be dealt with! I was thinking about going to c my doctor but now it seems like there's no point.....
Oh my gosh, it is almost nice to know im not the only one who has this problem. I am 21 and i had my daughter a year ago and not long after this ear pulsing started, if i bend my neck it gets louder but if I put pressure on my neck it goes away but only while im pushing on it, some times it goes away for a few days but it always comes back. When i get stressed it gets worse, I can sleep or function normally I need help soon im going crazy, PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT THIS IS AND HOW TO STOP IT TELL ME!!!
I remembered seeing some of these forums a while back and I had the same symptoms. I finally went and got mine looked at and it turns out I have an AVM. It is an arterio-venous malformation. The part where you can push it and it makes it stop is because that is the artery that is feeding it. I had to have an angiogram yesterday and I will be having surgery on mine because it's quite large (Huge mass on the side of my head.) I wanted to post this so if there is anyone searching for this post, they need to have it looked at. It seems like it's not too bad if you get it taken care of ahead of time. Google avm to find out more but make a doctors appointment asap to decrease the chances of it ruptering. Not to scare anyone, I had mine for three or four years and luckily got it looked at finally. The sooner it gets fixed the better
Okay, so I entered my question and found this site. It's a little comforting that I am not alone, however it doesn't seem like anyone has had any
luck with this issue. I have had neck issues (on the left side) since the early 90's. This heartbeat sound-whooshing sound started probably about 6-8 months ago and has gotten worse over the last month or two. I have been to countless doctors, chiropractors, physical therapy, nerve ablations, etc. etc. The only thing left is surgery, which I am not a fan of and most likely will not do. If anyone has had any success at least finding out what it could be, or if something can relieve it, please post it. I have headaches, neck pain and now this ear thing daily. :'(

It could be as simple as a B12 deficiency. It could be pernicious anemia. Get a blood test for B12 deficiency and for Intrinsic factor levels. Intrinsic factor is necessary to absorb B12. Low B12 can cause an increased heart rate to make up for the fact that your body isn't producing enough hemoglobin, You need B12 to produce it, it carries oxygen to all parts of the body. If you eat red meat once or twice a week or take vitamins, normally you would get enough B12, but with pernicious anemia the body doesn't process B12 properly. I've read some articles on the B12 shot being the treatment for pernicious anemia, and in cases where patients with pernicious anemia having the heartbeat sound in the ear as a symptom - the sound was gone within 24 hours. (search: "Tinnitus as a presenting symptom in pernicious anemia")
I'm hoping this will work for me. I'll post again, if it does or if it doesn't.

I've had the same exact symptoms for over a year. It's gotten to the point where I can't sleep anymore and I've started to get headaches as well. I don't have insurance so I haven't been able to see a doctor about this, not that they've been much help to anyone else on this post or any other regarding the issue. It seems to me that if this is such a common occurrence that someone out there would know whats going on and how to fix it.
Wow, like so many others, I am so happy to hear I am not alone. I had my son almost 3 years ago and shortly after I came home from the hospital the pulsing started...comically I thought at first I was going crazy and hearing voices so I slept with the lights on for 3-4 days however realized later it was actually just the pulsing in my right ear. I too asked my GP about it and she said sometimes it happens and you just will have to deal with it. It did tend to bother me the most at night or in quiet places but now its sort of a bessing in disguise because if I sleep on my right side the sound amplifies and I no longer and bothered by my husbands snoring :-) Now all fun aside, I have recently been waking up with vertigo like sensations that are worrying me enought to make another apt with the doc-the pulsing I guess I have gotten used to but paired with vertigo I cannot handle ignoring. Before I went I wanted to try to research the two symptoms to see if there was a connection and I ended up here. Anyway, my apt is next week and we'll see if I have any better luck than some other posters....will update the forum with the results.
In May of 2008 I started having jaw pains...could barely talk. Then in June had 1st vertigo attack and have been having them off and on since. The pain has progressed to include headaches in the back of my head (or where ever it wanted to go), extremely stuffy sinuses, dizzines, a feeling of something stuck in my throat, facial pain, tinnitus, stuffy ears. Come to find out it is called TMJD. Temporal mandibular joint dysfunction. Look it up you'll be surprised and relieved to find it has a name. And yes, Everyones answer is always Meniere's Disease. But it is difficult to find Drs who actually KNOW about the symptoms. You have to really search around for someone. After a year of worsening pain, and not being able to work I've found a good Dr. (go to headache.com) located in So Amboy,NJ, who has successfully treated people from all over the world to help rid them of their pain...with dispensing medications...and I guess when it comes to pain, people (just like me) will pay anything and go anywhere to get rid of it. I start my 1st treatment in 2 wks. CAN"T WAIT ! ! !
I have a sound in my left ear, It sounds like a eling fan and it drives me crazy and I can only hear it when everything is quiet. It drives me crazy. I have had mucas in my throat also, so I dont know if it links to that. But the sound in my ear is the beat to a heartbeat, but it sounds like pmping air. It's really strange. Any advice?
I, too have the ear pulsing, for about 10 years now. Annoying as can be! At times it has even awakened me, so loud I thought a tornado was close by!
I`m a lady, almost 57. When I was 49 I returned to college, and in order to hear the lectures, I had to lean my head on my right hand at the point of my jaw to turn off the swooshing noise!
Good news: I started to take Nasonex (mometasone furoate monohydrate) for allergies, and lo and behold, the ear noise stopped! Temporarily, of course, but now when the pulsing starts, I take a puff in the right nostril only and in a while it stops for a bit, at least long enough to sleep at night! I suppose it works by easing some of the swelling in there.
Now that I have learned from this forum about AVM, I think I`ll go get checked for it.
I hope this helps!!
