Ive gone through all of these symptoms plus, the right side of my body began to stiffen, making it difficult to use my right arm and shoulder. I also lost movement in my neck. After 5 different doctors, I was told that I had TMJ and an uncontrolled nerve, I was put on nortriptyline (30-50mg at bedtime. Nortriptyline is an antidepressant when used at or above 70mg, but pain management and migraine control are 2 off label uses that are safe. For my neck, arm, and shoulder, I had to see a chiropractor for rehab 3 times a week for almost 2 months to fully regain normal and pain free use. Symptoms did come back when I was menstruating, but soon went away if I took an extra 10-20mg of nortriptyline. Almost a manageable year later and the symptoms are coming back and are not being controlled with the previous slight increase in medication. Im going contact an ENTS soon about the possibility of ESS. Also, ibuprofen liquid capsules were the only other medication that stopped the pain, pulsing, and noise.

My husband complains of a buzzing sound in his ears " Star Wars Light Saber" sound. He only gets it when he is sleeping at night or when he takes a nap. It comes for a couple of days, goes away for odd amount of time and then shows up again. The only way he can stop it is he has to stand up and beat on his head. He's in the military, so unfortunately we have to see Army doctors and physician assistants. We have seen the military ears eyes nose and throat md, a neurologist physician assistant, a MRI, and scan of his ears. We already knew he was deaf in his left ear due to him being blown up in Iraq, but none of the tests explain the buzzing in his ears when he is sleeping. They are giving us the run around and will not give us an explanation or where to go to figure this out. I feel bad for him becuase it wakes him up. I wish someone would help us!

I also have the annoying rocking/pulsing which has prevented me from geetting a good night's sleep for a year and half. At first the symptoms were more like a mild rocking sensation while lying down on my right side, and the sensation was amplified when my right ear was on the pillow. I also have a feeling of fullness in my right ear, but I do not have hearing loss. Over the past year, the sensation increased to a pulsing and has also moved to my left ear, but not as strong. I have tossed and turned nightly, trying to get to sleep and usually end up with the left side of my head on the edge of the pillow so that my ear is hanging off the side. The sound is also there if I wake up in the middle of the night, and then need to repeat the process of trying to get comfortable again. And like most of you, several doctors have ignored my complaint, looked at me like I have horns growing out of my head, or told me that lots of people have that - like it's normal or OK. AACK. It really makes you want to scream or cry or both. :'(
When I first experienced the symptom, I went to an ENT who was baffled and ended up doing an MRI. Ironically, it turns out that I have a very small acoustic neuroma, but its in the left ear, not the right ear - where the sensation is the strongest. Then I was diagnosed with a multinodular goiter. I've read that hyperthyroidism can cause this pulsing sensation, but two Endocrinologists that I've been to, say my thyroid problem has nothing to do with this pulsing sensation, even though the pulsing sensation started to increase after starting the thyroid medicine, Synthroid, and diminshed greatly about a week after I recently discontinued it. Now I have less trouble going to sleep but the sensation is still there. The only doctor who has even offered a possible solution is my gynecologist who suggested that I have the coratid artery checked, which I had done a couple of years ago before the pulsing started, and it was OK. In addition, I was recently diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, and in my head and heart, I believe that this is also related to the pulsing, thyroid/adrenal problems, and thyroid meds.
Fed up with the lack of interest by MD's to acknowledge/solve this problem, I have gone to a chiropractor, who specializes in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. He says it's an adrenal problem. I have not started a treatment yet, but I'm willing to give it a try.

In all my Internet searchings, I have discovered that the sensation is called vascular tinnitus. I believe that I have found the best article that describes this phenomenon and possible reasons. I hope this helps and best of luck to all of you with this problem.

I've been hearing what I like to describe as a washing machine in my right ear or a car alarm. lol
And about 3 inches upward from my ear get this pain. My right eye has been twitching so much....???? I have been losing my balance on and off.
I missed work today because I can't go on like this anymore it's just too much for me.
I haven't gone to see a doctor. I might today. I feel so weak and tired.

I know this is an old post, but I thought I'd comment anyways. Ive been suffering with the same thing in my left ear for 8 years. Been to lots of Doctors(western, eastern, etc) and nothing helped. I recently started seeing an Upper Cervical Chiropractor and it has helped me so much. If your atlas/Axis (top two vertibrea on your spine) are out of wack, you can suffer from many chronic conditions. Basically my brainstem was being "pinched". I was having anxiety, digestive problems, mentrual problems, etc. Now I feel great. Everything is getting back to normal. The "throbbing" in my left ear is WAY less intense, and is not as frequent.

Hi

I have an irritating pulsating in my ear that has been occurring for the last six months. So I am new to this in comparison to the rest of you. I have had an MRI and my ENT doc couldn't recognize anything wrong. He sent my result to the neurologist and his thinks I might have Meriere's Disease. I read it and it sounds like I have a lot of the symptoms. Only one ear is effected at the momement. I have constant pulsating in my ear. Worse when I am sleeping and laying on my side. It eventually goes away. It sounds like I am draining a blood from one side of my head to another. Once the blood is successfully to one side then the pulsating stops. It's really weird. It drives me crazy. I always have a slight sense of vertigo, but not as bad as some of the other people have complain. I wonder if mine will increase with time?? I hope not. Maybe I am just use to it.

I have had pulsing in my ear for two years. Been to a medical doctor and a chiropractor. Chiropractor had relief but did not fix the problem and became expensive. Some times i have preasure in head, back side close to neck. There is also a loud nice like paper crinkling. Change positions and goes away. I HAVE FOUND A FIX. I went to Energy health and wellness. I was checked for Parasites. Take Paracom and parastat. I am on my third month and they are not quiet gone but my noice and preasure is totally gone.

I started getting this just this morning when I woke up and I thought I was just hearing things. Then I got it again just now when I was trying to sleep, so I decided to google it and I realized its pretty common.

I can't sleep or anything. I only hear it when I'm laying down. I literally heard it for the first time this morning. It better be temporary, or it's going to drive me insane.

I have the same symptoms everyone has described.

Went thru the same process at ENT & General Practioner. The last ENT I presumed got so confused that he told me that I need to loose a qhole lot a weight.

I must share this amazing discovery though...........One day I felt so distressed that I told my husband I wish he could just hear the sound and believe me when I told him that I not making up the story and I am not getting crazy.

TO MY SURPRISE!!!!!!! HE CAN HEAR THE SOUND WHEN HE PLACED HIS EAR OVER MY EAR!!!!!

I have now resolved to keep squeezing the vein behind my ear until either my shoulder or my finger gets tired.

Wow thank you for the post about the parasites, I have been going to physical therapy, cranial sacral, and acupuncture treatments for about six weeks now trying to figure out my headaches and the throbbing and clicking in my right ear. So I just called my naturopathic doctor and inquired about a parasite test. They claim that getting tested for parasites from a hospital or regular doctor often turns up negative, but they recommended a test that I am going to try. If it turns out that I have parasites I will post another reply to this site. This ear thing is starting to affect me mentally, emotionally, and physically. I don't know how so many people have dealt with it for so long. I have sympathy for all of you and I hope that we can all get to the solutions we seek.
I highly recommend going to a quality naturopath as opposed to an ent or general practitioner. But no matter who you go to, you alone are solely responsible for finding out the truth about your health, so question everyone's authority to say what the solution to your problem might be. You know what feels right and what doesn't. With the amount of inaccurate diagnoses these days it pays to be in charge of your own health! In so many ways! Again I wish you all the best, and I think we all have similar symptoms but I am not sure that they have the same causes or solutions.
Thank you.

Hi, this pulsing in my right ear started this morning. I was hoping it would just go away but after reading some of these posts I'm getting a bit worried. If it continues then I will go for some of the tests that I've seen here in this forum.
I figure that if its something to do with my lifestyle then it might be useful to others if I list a few negative or relevant aspects of my lifestyle. If you can find common attributes then it might help to narrow down the cause of this problem. I've also written in brackets potential problems resulting from each aspect of my lifestyle.
-I'm Male, 26 yrs old,
-I've just given up smoking, this has lead me to eat a lot more (increased blood pressure?),
-I'm using patches and chewing nicotine gum (medicinal side effects?)
-Just lost my job so I've been sitting around for the last week or so. (bad circulation and posture?)
-I have a high metabolism so I eat a lot of junk food. (increases blood pressure?)
-I clean my ear with my finger every now and then (parasites?)
-I only do about 15 minutes worth of exercise every day(not helping the blood pressure)
-I spend a lot of time in front of my computer(inflamed optic nerves from light strain?).

I hope this helps.

Interesting that 2 things were brought up and I have both! First, I have had the heartbeat in my left ear for almost 2 years straight and it's driving me nuts. I tend to notice it when I'm a little dehyrated or stressed. I have hypothyroid and was just diagnosed yesterday with TMJ/TMD.....so I'm thinking the heartbeat problem is coming from one of these!!

I have been experiencing the same symptoms as most described here. Mine have been going on for probably about ten years off and on. It has been particularly bad in the last couple weeks again, and it is enough to drive me batty! I attributed it to all of the extra stress that I have been in lately; thought it may be a blood pressure issue, but my bp has been fine. I have only mentioned it to a doctor before, and they looked at me like I was crazy, so I did not pursue it further. I get the pulsing sound in my ears most of the time; it interferes with my hearing and is terribly distracting. The only time it doesn't seem to be there is when I am up and walking, when I lie with the affected side down, when I hold my breath, or when I put physical pressure on my neck or ear. I have found that using one of those foam, expanding ear plugs seems to offer some relief, but I can't just walk around all day with one in my ear. I would like to find a more permanent fix, but I don't know where to start. If anyone has any luck with the ENT, please let me know.
