I have suffered this pain before and it was due to excessive stress in my life, that caused gas to be produced resulting in this pain under my shoulder blades. The doctor gave me tablets and it went away within days.

Hi. I would like to ask what's really causing it
My boyfriend started complaining about the pain he feels on his left shoulder blade. He told me that before but he told me that maybe it's just a sprain or something. I asked him what did he do to make himself feel such discomfort but he told me that pain occurred when he went out of the school's comfort room.
2 days later, he had colds and his back didn't hurt anymore. Unfortunately, when he was about to pick me up at school a day later, he complains again about the pain on his shoulder blades and this time, it's worse than before.
First thing that went on my mind was pleurisy.
Pls, help me, what's wrong with him?
What could be the probable cause of his pain?

I have the same pain and I'm only 12. I sleep on my side so it might have something to do with that. Nothing seems to work for it and there are no visible signs that it's there, but it hurts like heck.

Hi I recently found something that works! Lay on the side that is painful and stretch the same arm out as far as you can So that you are laying solely on your shoulder blade. Lay there for about 2-5 minutes.

People experiencing this pain (I am not a doctor, not even close.)... I'm athletic myself.. I ride bikes, jog, play sports, lift weights, sleep wrong... about once a week I experience pain behind my shoulder blades in my back, but I have learned how to correct it before it becomes too painful to bare.. The way I picture it is that a nerve or muscle fiber has been pinched by the shouldblade itself, and the longer it remains that way it becomes inflamed and sore... It starts out as a sharp pain only felt in certain movements and then becomes just sore and painful regularly (inflammed). Makes sense? What I do is lift my shoulders as high as I can towards my ears both at the same time... and a lot of the time I will hear and feel a pop sound accompanied by a sudden shift of the shoulder blades (unpinching the nerve/fiber).  Thats when I know I have solved the problem(it takes practice)... The pain will usually subside within 3-4 hours... (the re-alignment has taken place, but the agrivated nerve/muscle fiber has to come down from inflamation.) I've been doing this for about 6 years without fail, it works for me at least. Hope this helps...

I just got in from the dr. today. My pain in the chicken wing" area of my back, left side, was EXCRUCIATING. I got nauseous in the shower and had to throw up from trying to wash my hair! The pain from putting my arm up and back almost knocked me out. I got to work very late and took almost 30 mins to get from my car in the parking garage to my building -- a usual seven minute walk-- because my work items were too heavy to carry in either arm based on how my body was pulling. Tears were involuntarily streaming down my cheeks. I got tot he nurse in my building and she said I had a pinched nerve and required medical care. I had to choose what to do, so I picked this urgent care place that did all the stuff in-house, like xrays and lab stuff, etc. They said I had mild scoliosis and have probably had it forever. That I had muscle spasms and a pinched nerve. They gave me steroids, pain killers, and muscle relaxers and understood that I was in great pain. I am talking like pain that makes you sweat and vomit and pass out. I am athletic and very healthy. I had no clue I had this condition. I have had these pains before (also in the lower back) where it feels like someone stabbed me with a hot railroad spike and it is first a jolt and then takes like a month to entirely go away. These pains I have been advised, will recur as there is conflict with my shifting spine and muscles, trapping and pinching nerves. I am horrified. My left arm was filled with tingles (still is), and at one point the pectoral muscle was also spasming and I could almost feel the pain on the entire other side of my body, under my boob, in the same place in the front. There feels to be a giant metal knot where the railroad spike first occurred between my shoulder blade and spine as an epicenter which is just radiating rings of flaming hell. Even with the copious meds I feel it and my left arm numbness/tingling persists. The difference is that I care less due to the meds which still translates into caring a hell of a lot. The dr. said this is "common" with mild scoliosis and this episode should be significantly better within seven days with help from the relaxers and steroid. I hope I can do it for seven days because when this medicine wears off I feel like I will be right back where I started. Does anyone have this??

Hey there. I had the same idea and even though I would get these weird pains about once a year for like... maybe 7 years now, I always attributed it to something I did like sleeping funny, sleeping in a car, lifting weights improperly, etc. It was like a pinch was occurring from a torn or inflamed muscle which would swell or whatever and so i tried all this stuff like heat/cold compresses every 20 mins, advil for antiinflamitoy stuff, caffiene for bloodflow, etc. And it always took at least a week and mostly up to a month to sort itself out. I think a realignment was happening too. Now I am 34 and I just got freeking' diagnosed with scoliosis. Even when I went to the dr. for back pain once like... well probably seven yrs. ago no one ever took an exray because there was no skeletal trauma. Now, as an adult, my insurance requires xrays before an MRI (probably to be cheap, but I do have fantastic insurance now), and THAT Is the only reason they found the stupid scoliosis, which I have probably had since childhood, but now because I am getting old as dirt, it is affecting me more negatively. SO... just a heads' up. Don't live with this and get to be 34 without getting a spine xray because you may be able to get some kind of nonsurgical treatment to help you stave off the excruciating pain beyond my age, cause it is AWFUL and keeping me from my work (as are the meds).

I also have a pain under/beside my left shoulder blade. It has been persisting for about a year now. It wakes me up constantly throughout the night. I am a physical therapy student and I am still puzzled by this pain. It is a sharp stabbing pain, but I also feel a slight sensation across the area of my back where the pain is. This is just a sensory sensation so that leads me to think it may be connected to some sort of nerve impingement/damage. But mainly I think the pain is caused from postural problems, but then again I'm not completely sure. All I know is that it hurts and its an annoying pain.

It's trapped gas that gets under your shoulder blade. It's seems to be like a big bubble. It makes it hard to take a deep breath and uncomfortable to lay down. It eventually goes away, but can always come back. Hope this helps!!

I have the same problem. My pain feels like it is under my right shoulder blade. Sometimes, the pain is so strong i can't walk, breath, roll over in bed, or move my right arm without excruciating pain. I had my boyfriend try to massage it out thinking I had a musscle that was in a knot. It only made it worse. I don't know if i should go to hospital, (although i've been seriously considering it). And i haven't been in any kind of sport in years. I stay active, but not overly to the point where I would place this pain with an activity i did where i could have sprained. Sometimes the pain is so strong I can hardly handle it. I'm 22 and have been experiencing this pain for several months now, at least. Pains meds like tylonal don't seem to do anything, and I'm not fond of doctor prescribed pain meds. I don't know what I should do.
