I too, have problems with my left sholder blade . I'm very active and lift fairly heavy things due to my job . I started with lower back pain and that when away, then came pain up the middle of my back. That as well when away and now I'm stuck with pain down my sholder blade (stronger at the bottom of the blade) with a real strong sharp pain in front midway down my ribs. Tieing my shoe strings really put a zing in pain level. I have always been small , healthy and active. Any Ideas ???
I experienced severe pain behind my left shoulder blade and went to a doc-in-the-box. I was told it was the muscle that controls head movement and often comes on for no apparent reason. The doc gave me muscle relaxant and pain pills and I was better the next day. Also told me to use moist heat. The pain was really severe but within 24 hours with these meds, I was OK.
I just went to the doctor for what you are describing (tying my shoe hurts too). I am also quite active and in my 30s. I bike every day and practice martial arts. I'm not sure how I damaged it, but one day I lifted my arm over my head and felt a sharp pain between my left shoulder blade and my spine. No stranger to pulled muscles, I just thought "OK, here we go again. I pulled something and it will heal in a few days". However, after 3 weeks of seering pain that felt, at times, like I had been stabbed behind my shoulder blade I decided to get it looked at. My diagnosis was "subscapular bursitis" (meaning that I damaged the tissue behind my Scapula (shoulder blade) and now the Bursa (sac of fluid that is supposed to cushion this area) is inflamed and hurting like a...well, you know. They gave me some stretches to do and some anti-inflammatory medication. Also, if this doesn't work there is physical therapy or a cortisone shot to the affected area. Hopefully, I can deal with mine through stretches and let it heal naturally. I hope you find relief soon too.

What every one is describing has been what i have been going through for a while now. But just flared up worse about 4 days ago. I had a bad car wreck about 10 years ago that left me pretty messed up. I am 28 now and not very active because of the wreck except with my job (care giver to people with mental disabilities). I have extremely bad, sharp, stabbing pain in both of my shoulder blades, under and around them. Have been taking prescription pain medication for about 3 years now for back pain, but it doesn't even touch this pain. Have no idea what i could of done to make it worse, but the pain is unbearable. I have to keep my back perfectly straight, no twisting, bending, or using my arms especially the elbows up. It saddens me that so many other people have this same condition and no one know what it is or how to cure it... I have just visited my doctor this morning and she gave me a steroid shot, if it even works it will only last for about 24 hours then back to the pain.. Thank all of you for letting me know i am not alone in this, And I wish Us all the best of luck in figuring this out..
I have the same pain. But, I also had this before, and it was calcium deposits on my rotator cuff. I also had a tear in it. Had surgery a year and a half ago, now the same sort of pain. It is very painful! Going back to the Ortho doc tomorrow. I really hope I don't have another tear and have to go through surgery again. You guys should get MRI's done to rule of rotator cuff issues.
i had this pain also. may 2013 i had diskectomy ...c 5 6 .. no relief. 1 week ago i had rotator cuff full tear and my bicep reattached. that scapular pain seems to be gone . i had a emg ? to see if the pain was coming from my neck first. i had spurs both places. i hope you find the dr that helps you. i had a neurosurgeon for my cervical discs and an ortho that specializes in shoulders for the cuff. do research your drs .. sorry. one handed typing.
I had an exray and it showed nothing. Refered to PT, I guess my next step, won't give me any pain meds?
PT it is then, wish me luck.
If your pain is worse when laying back might be pericarditis. They might need to do a chest MRI to find fluid in the back of the heart.
I have the same problems, but because of my shoulder bag that I carry everyday. What did your doctor say in your case? Best wishes.
I have been dealing with the same pain for 10 years now without a diagnosis. The pain has only gotten worse and travels from shoulder blade to shoulder blade and it is so bad sometimes it wakes me in the middle of the night and it feels like my arms are going to exploded off my body. It also happens now in my knees and ankles. The spasms have progressed into uncontrollable movements in my arms and legs. It has become a very debilitating condition. I wish I could give you better news but actively persue a cause/cure and alternative therapies like acupuncture. Nip this in the but as soon as you can because it really does suck to live you life like this everyday. I constantly drop things and fall from the numbness and tingling in my arms and legs. In the beginning I was too stubborn to see a Dr because I had to work to pay my bills and thought it would just go away with some rest and taking it easy. It may be to late for me to see any real improvement but you sound like I did 8-9 years ago. Please if you can persue and cure and not just the pills because all they do is make you not care as much as you would if you didn't have them . Seriously try the acupuncture before your nerve damage is to great to fix. Good luck.
