I am so happy that I found this site. I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was taking Metadate CD for my ADHD and it made the tip of my tongue go numb. Now I am on Vyvanse which is the same as adderall. My mouth gets very dry and I get inflamed taste buds. I also clench my jaw and get jaw pain and I find I am doing the suction thing inside my mouth too. Because of this, I can't take my medicine every day. I have tried more water and chewing gum, but still have problems. I would love to know what you guys do to help. I need the meds to function, but this is a pretty big side effect.

I have taken adderall on & off for over 2 years & for the first year I also had horrible mouth pain as described by others here. One thing that helped me was gargling with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide & 1/2 water occassionally, it seems to lessen the intensity of the pain. I started taking a multivitamin everyday & forcing myself to drink water every hour (or every other hour if I forget), and I have only had a few irritated taste buds this year. I really think dehydration was a main factor.....(for me at least)

I wiggle my toungue around and rub it raw as well. My gums get sore because I bite down so hard.

But... the inability to swallow because of extreme pain is acid reflux damage to your mouth and esophegus.

Try taking tums or somthing, avoid acidic foods..the ussual stuff to combat heartburn. I take adderall probly about 4 times a year to write final papers and such. I also have had chronic acid reflux for about 3 years. Take my word for it...I know how painful it can be. its literally impossible to eat.. the tissue is damaged but you're so hungry. Anyway, goodluck

A very close friend of mine has been taking adderall for almost 3 years now. He has researched it extensively over the course of that time in order to try and minimize neurotoxicity and other negative side effects. He would occasionally get the swollen inflamed tongue and hard swollen, sometimes white, taste buds but usually only after taking a larger than normal dose, or when pulling an all nighter. He believed it was because of the repetitive licking that is induced at higher dosages so he took measures to prevent the licking/tongue movement by consciously making an effort to stop it, as well as constantly having a large supply of gum and water on hand (something sweet is easier to drink more of). Also on some occasions he would use Xanax or another anti-anxiety such as an opiate to calm the anxious movement. This did seem to decrease the severity and frequency of the painful tongue, however this past year he encountered it again on multiple occasions despite taking all the usual measures to prevent it. He also noticed that in the most severe cases, his skin would become red very easily and overall have an inflammed/irritated hue. After doing some research he discovered that a possible cause of an inflamed tongue is a deficiency of vitamin b6 (ie. here: Now if you know anything about adderall, vitamin b6 is a crucial co-factor in the production of dopamine in the brain, which is the neurotransmitter that adderall increases . Taking adderall puts a very high demand on certain vitamins and nutrients, and vitamin b6 is one of the most crucial, along with vitamin C (try and find buffered vitamin C, calcium ascorbate, so it's not acidic, acidic intestines decreases the absorption of amphetamines dramatically). He began supplementing with vitamin b6, as well as a b complex (and magnesium glycinate is always a good idea too) for good measure and hasn't had the swollen tongue since.

I had the same reaction, only with Vyvanse. The inside of my mouth became raw and was extremely inflamed. I had an extremely dry mouth and drank 3+ quarts of water a day. The inflammation in my mouth got so bad that I lost all ability to taste anything sweet. My doctor switched me over to Adderall XR and the inflammation is gone and my sweet taste buds are coming back. Hall's has a lozenge with advanced moisturizing. It helps with the dry mouth. The zinc lozenges also helped.

Ok so i took adderall off and on for aabout 2 years without a prescription i would always suck on the insides of my cheeks unknowingly but about a few days ago i got an actual prescription from a doctor and the whole inside of my mouth became sore and felt weird. at first i just figured i rubbed it raw with my tongue but my throat and underneath my tongue was sore too. to be honest i got really scared and started looking std symptoms! but then i didnt take my adderall for a couple of days and it started to go away and i decided to look up side effects of adderall. i am convinced that my adderall is the cause of my weird mouth irritation! i dont want to stop my adderall cause it helps so much but this is so annoying! what did yall do??

Hi Everyone! I am a 21 year old female that has been struggling with ADHD my entire life. I just recently sought help with it as it seemed to be affecting my relationships and school work pretty dramatically and was prescribed Adderall XR, or for me the generic version which is simply called Amphetamine Salts. I was given a prescription with 10 mg pills, enough for 6 a day so that I could titrate my dosage myself. Having taken adderall on a couple of occasions before (getting it from friends, etc) I knew that 10 mg would have virtually no effect on me, ditto 20 mg. I decided to start with 40 mg on the first day and realized very quickly it was too high of a dosage for myself personally. I am 5'5" and weigh 125 lbs. During that first day, I ate a large meal prior to taking my medication, and then did not eat until late that night when the effects of the adderall began to wear off. Of course, at this point I was starving since I am used to taking in around 2200 calories/day because I have a very high physical activity level. I instantly scarfed down a Banana with no problems, then ate a granola bar. I noticed while eating the granola bar that the roof of my mouth began to sting and felt almost raw. It went away with 10 minutes but I attributed it instantly to eating. I have since lowered my dosage to 30 mg a day and my appetite is not as low, and I am still noticing great benefits from the medication. When I do eat on the medication, I tend to stay away from anything hard that can scratch my mouth (granola, wheat products other than bread, etc) if I do eat anything that can irritate my mouth, I chew it almost entirely in the front of my mouth in very small bites and this seems to minimize and sometimes prevent all together the pain in the roof of my mouth.

I would definitely recommend people not to EVER exceed 60 mg without a prescription from a licensed psychiatrist. Amphetamines have extreme effects on the body and there is a reason the FDA limits the mg intake per person to 90 mg a day and any dose higher than 40 mg a day is usually only for those with extreme circumstances. I absolutely have done some silly stuff in my life and I'm not trying to patronize anyone, I just want people to be careful! Haha, these are controlled substances and they can be extremely dangerous in high amounts.

Back to the topic of this thread-
I have not experienced any of the sores or pain in the rest of my mouth, only in the very back on the roof of my mouth. It's possible that this could be a type of allergic reaction to the amphetamines or even one particular salt. Adderall is a mixture of four different amphetamine salts in equal parts. It's also possible that you could just be on too high of a dose and taking it down even 5mg would help you significantly- and not drastically lower the positive effects of the medication. If none of this works, you can try what I do and when you eat anything that isn't soft, take small bites and chew in the front of your mouth before you swallow. :-) I know it's a pain but I hope this helped some people. ADD/ADHD is extremely frustrating to live with and there should be a solution for everyone!

Good luck! :-)

I usually get adderall xr 25mg once a month, 30 pills last me about 4 days. Every time I have used it I develop small blisters on tip of my tongue. My mouth becomes extremely sore to the point if I eat food , even if its bread it will tear the skin that lines the roof of my mouth right off.(Imagine what it does to your liver). My throat and neck feel like Im getting an infection and the pain makes me think im sick. But once the adderall is all gone and I go back to sleep. Im fine after waking up.

A few of the posts here have me concerned. Swelling of the tounge or throat is actually considered an emergency allergic reaction while something like motor tics (or mouth tics) are seriouse side effects. It's a really good idea to look up actual drug facts and information (especially side effects) when taking ANY schedule II prescription drug.

I've been on adderall for a few weeks and have been coping with "burning tongue syndrome" through out. I have had dealt with BTS intermittently over the years (i'm on too many meds to count) and have been dealing with dry mouth over the decade. This is worse than it's ever been. I've been to my primary care who is sending me for blood work. I googled Adderall and BTS- and here I am. I'll stop it tomorrow (which is unfortunate... because it was really helping with my ADHD) to see if it helps anything. It's good to read about other people that have had this experience- hard to imagine a time before we had this access!

What is wrong with all you self-centered ***edited by moderator*** ** inappropriate posting**. I'm on here to find a remedy to a problem that's causing me excrutiating pain, and every ***edited by moderator*** ** inappropriate posting** post on this blog is a bunch of idiots going into deep elaboration about a problem that's obvious related to ***edited by moderator*** ** inappropriate posting** adderall. One ***edited by moderator*** ** inappropriate posting** whose probably on 100mg of adderall right now wrote like 5 pages on nothing but himself and his problem with adderall. Please could somebody actually offer a piece of advise, so I don't have to read through 40 of the exact same stories on how adderall causes soars on their tongue?

i CANNOT BELIEVE other people have this problem!!!!!!!!!

i am a law student, i take adderall on a daily basis and more often during final exams... I am in SO MUCH PAIN right now, and anytime i take it, that i figured let me google the side affect.. i have been taking adderall FOREVER and this is very new, and the ABSOLUTE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE WORST PAIN I HAVE EVER EVER EXPERIENCE. my entire mouth is completely swollen and the gums are sensitive and inflammed.. i get this horrific painful swollen piece that grows under my tongue anytime i take anymore than 20 mg in one day. i have a final paper due tmrw, and i took probably around 100 mg throughout the course of the past 48 hours and i cannot eat, sleep, talk, do almost anything bc i am in the most severe pain. i get holes, like actual gaping holes, in the sides of my tongue, along with this lovely, swollen piece under my tongue and my entire mouth is so inflammed i cannt buy or apply enough ora-gel to make it anymore bearable. i asked my dentist, doctors, no one knows of the correlation bc of the adderall, but if ANYYYYYYYYYONE out there has some idea either a) why this happens, other than stress which clearly makes it worse but cannot be the only cause, and b) have a REAL, ACTUALLY MAKES IT BEARABLE pain relief for this, PLEASEEE SHARE!!! i am in tears typing this wanting my boyfriend to take me to the ER for novicane into the tongue, thats how badly this pain is. i know you understand if you are reading this, bc i cant believe i found this posting, PLEASE HELP!
DOES ANYONEEE KNOW OF A PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION TO COUNTER THE SIDE EFFECT?!?!?! OR POSSIBLY A LEGITIMATE REASON FOR THE SIDE EFFECT AND THE SEVERITY? i am so grateful to anything someone can offer, as i RELY on this medication to survive through law school. please, anyone out there. HELP!

Ive taken this sh*t alot of times, just for buzzes and such and basically, when your on this stuff you tend to do stuff with your mouth for example grind your teeth, chew your tongue, just generally rub your tongue around your mouth, just basic stuff like this but you dont have a clue your doing it, everything will be fine until about 12 hours then this is when i usually want to eat after taking it. Whenever i eat something the top of my mouth just starts throbbing and becoming so painful, drink milk alot, that helps! After about a day or 2 i can eat fine and everything is back to normal

The sore swollen roof of mouth and tongue is absolutely 100% due to acid reflux! It is agony I know! Keep hydrated, take some tums or some antacids
