I never had this problem as a youth. I am now 30, but this itchy, bumpy rash first manifested during a 12 day vacation I spent in Hawaii back in 2000. Now, ever since my first outbreak I am unable to tan in a bed. My concern is when I do attempt to tan my rash and the associated itch does not subside within a few hours to a day as reported in other posts. I suffer from the skin irritation for as many as seven to 10 days. I cannot tan "every other day" as many suggest. Can anyone offer any insight as to why my symptoms are so much more persistant and long-lasting?

So I have experienced the same ichy feeling... it tingles badly and iches extremely. I am also on birth control, but last summer i got it for only the first week i tanned then it went away. when it happened tho i asked the front desk receptionist and she said it was a heat rash and that i should keep tanning? and i guess it went away. I dont know what i did more but i wish i could do it again cuz i got a package at the beginnnig of February. The ichy bull c**p came back and it still has not gone away. ... . .so i put an ice pack on my chest and it goes away for a while. It is horribly annoying. I keep tanning because of what the lady said last year but it still seems to stay.... . .. i'm very upset plus i can not get any tanner for some reason.. but i dont burn???? I truely think it is from birth control and the sweat sitting on your chest absorbing back into the skin... In conclusion tonight i'm going to try and wipe it off and use different non sented body wash i think thats what it is... o ya the lady i asked last year said it is also caused by perfume or make up staying on the skin. Along with post 5/08/09 at 6:20 i may have to quit it is interruption my sleep too

I have been tanning all my life. First i grew up in hawaii in the sun , then later moved to north idaho where as a result of not long enough summers i started tanning in beds."fake and bake". i get red welt like rashes on my butt about 2 hours after i tan. i have done some research on this and found it is called "prickly heat" . Basically sweat trapped and bacteria and/or dead skin cells trapped in your pores. Seems to be harmless so far. However if you experience tiredness, dizziness, or nausea that is a sign of heat exhaustion and you need to be seen. Also if you start running a fever it is most likely a form of staff infection called foliculitis.

I tried tanning last year and broke out each time I tanned. I tried it once this year and did the same thing. I am not talikng any meds or birth control so I don't think it's that. It appears yo be somr type of heat rash.

I have recently started tanning as well, and I also have these itchy red bumps on my chest and butt area. I was worried they might be something bad, but all these posts help me think otherwise! :-) I told the worker at my tanning salon I had these itchy bumps and she said it could possibly be from perfume that doesn't react well with the tanning beds. My bumps keep spreading though, so I'm not sure exactly. Good luck figuring it out! Let me know if you come across anything helpful.

yeah, i have had the same thing happen to me. i only go tanning once in a while, and when i do, i believe my feet get really hot and start to sweat. i normally have really hot feet to begin with, but after alot of research online. I found out that its from that. so if you have hot feet to begin with, then no worries. its just sweat build up! it will go away with some lotion, or benadryl spr.

i also get a rash from tanning, its a reaction to the uv rays, and the sun. one thing that helps reduce this some is using a sun block. i use a 4 or an 8 and that reduces the allergy some, and you still tan just a little slower. hope this helps

Good luck ladies.
I tan great in the sun no matter how long it's been since the last time.
As far as tanning beds.. it's just not in the cards for some of us.
I first got red "spots" under one of my boobs that itched only a little bit. Nothing that wasn't un-bareable.
And today I noticed that I have big red bumps on the sides of my arms. I've switched lotions, used different moisturizers, wiped down the bed, you name it.
I don't think that there's anything for us to do. Either deal with it or don't tan :/

I've had this same problem its a rash that appears in the crack between my breast, legs, and arms (side of elbows). The rash is very uncomfortable extremely itchy and very bumby. I thought it was my lotion so I switched lotions and that didn't help. I then switched beds as well which didn't help any either. Eventually the rash went away as I kept tanning. I did however stop for a day or two at a time to let the rash heal. Anyhow I just started back up tanning again (at a different tanning salon) and the rash appeared again in the same places. I think it only happens in the beginning of tanning. It's very frustrating, but I don't think it's anything serious as of now anyway.
