I didn't know what I'd find looking up "protruding rib cage on one side" this morning.  Unbelievable so many people have it too!  I got something weird to report about mine.  Like most of you, it was on my left side, at the bottom.  Looking at various pictures online, it's like the 6th or 7th vertebra.  Had it ever since I can remember.

Well, this past weekend, I had a minor bike crash where I landed on my right ribs in the same vicinity of where the protrusion is on my left side.  It was so minor that the right side only had scratches and was fine to the touch a day later.  Here's the weird part.  As I got up from the crash, the left side at the protrusion site was hurting.  I did NOT get hit on the left side.  I figured I just tweaked something and needed to stretch it out.  Now a week later, it still hurts to cough and move around, kind of like a cracked rib, but THE PROTRUSION IS GONE!  Did I just get a lucky hit?

I'll report back in a few months, but I will say that I've been seeing a chiropractor for many years and a recurring issue I have is with Thoracic 6 vetebra... the one that connects to the 6th rib.  The plot thickens.

Guys I am a Strength and Conditioning Coach from Australia and see this a lot in athletes in one sided upper body sports - tennis, baseball, rowing etc.

Often it is caused by a number of differing factors and could be simply a bit of muscle activation.

Read this article. It gets a little technical but if you can understand it give it a go or ask someone qualified. Eric Cressey is a physiology Guru in America and really knows his stuff.

HI, My name is Jessica and I am 14 years old.
Last year while on a school field trip, I got tired, so I leaned to one side and put my hand on my hip pretty close to my ribcage.  I felt this weird thing on my rib, like something protruding to my skin kinda. I checked the other side and there was nothing. so, i stood up straight and realized it was gone. Also, when I lay down it goes away too. I showed my Mom it, and she didn't think it was anything. Like a month later, I showed it to my friends at school, and they were all feeling it. They were all telling me I had to see a doctor. So, I did. My doctor had no idea what it was and said he never saw it before. He sent me to get a ultrasound, but it didn't show up on there either. Then, I got an xray. It didnt show up. They got me an appointment at a children's hospital about an hour away. They guy felt it, and then he felt the other side. Then , he checked to see if he could feel it while i was laying down, and he couldn't. He asked me if I do dance and I said no. He was like do you lean to one side a lot and I was like ya because my back packs so heavy that I have to. ( Its a one shoulder back pack). He told me if it ever starts to hurt me, I will need surgery to cut some of it off. It turned out it was just my 11th rib the whole time. It doesn't hurt but sometimes when i sit down too long it does start to hurt. Not  badly, but very uncomfortable. Is this normal??

I have the same problem as all of you have been describing, but my 3rd and 4th ribs seem to be protruding on the right side while my left seem to have a normal curve to them. I am 14, female and slightly worried about how this might affect further development.

i have that problem to my left ribs stick out very pointy at the bottom and seem worse sense i have scoliosis

i have found that doing a simple exercise with a athletic ball helps you just lay straight back and spread your legs a little

hope this helps

I can't believe i'm not the only one! I feel so much better knowing that i'm not the only one going through this. As you can probebly guess mine is also on the left and for awhile I was pretty upset by it. Being a 15 y/o girl, its kind of a big deal not having that perfect swim body and my rib just ruined it.;-) Now I relize that I was being pretty stupid. I could go to a million doctors and they would all tell me the same thing. That there was nothing they could do. That everything was normal. Well, i'm not embarrassed by it anymore. If people got a problem with it I can just be like, "Yea! I have a rib sticking out. So what? It just means i'm unique!":-) So don't be embarressed by your rib. Embrace it! Because in the end, it will just be a waste of time hiding it. And i'm not going to hide. If i did, i wouldnt be able to wear my bikini anymorexp:-DXD

Hi,

I have the same thing. My left rib sticks out more the the other. I started noticing it about a year ago and being a 14 y/o girl being perfect was everything. How silly! My dad said that it was nothing and that it probebly ment that I was going to grow taller which i wasent too happy with either being the giant i am. I started getting some pain on my right side rib. After the pain increased from disconfort to a sharp pain, my mother took me to the doctor. The doctor was amazed by it. She ad no idea what it was or why i was having pain. She sent me to go do tests and x rays. They all came up negative saying that there was nothing wrong with me. She said that if the pain is still there in a week i need to see a pediatrition. By this point, being 15 now, you must understand that i was pretty upset that they couldnt fix me. That i was to be this way forever. But i now relize that it doesnt matter. That i am who i am and its not like the bone is going to ruin my life. No one can even see it through me shirt! The pain is on and off but still hurts so ill be going back soon. If i do find out anything ill let you guys know. Sorry this message is so long but this is tthe first site i have found where I now know that I'm not alone and that there are people out there with the same problem i have. So thankyou for listening.:-)
