We too have this rib issue that you all describe above. My mother and I have experienced sharp pain when we do certain activities ie; pulling on tights/pantyhose or bending and twisting to do up a side buckle on my shoe. I too found relief for this rib problem with regular chiropractic care. I find yoga, massage and chiropractic together work well to keep it at bay. I also take great care to not bend in the positions that cause it to "pop" out.

I know a lot of people that has this problem including me all you have to do is eat 6 meals a day it goes away and then you work out abs it doesn't go away it is hidden but you need abs in order for it to go to normal because the ribs can be moved by muscle

Hi, I have a 14 year old son who I just took to see a specialist for pectus excavatum...to look at him you would not see the chest wall deformity, but what you will see and most of you here are posting about is a condition called flared ribs. Flared ribs is usually secondary to a chest wall deformity and is hereditary. The flared ribs are pretty easy to fix-especially if you are still in puberty and your bones have yet to fuse. You can get a neoprene "back brace" off of Amazon and cut it in half so you have approximately 2- 4 inch pieces with velcro. wear it as much as possible placing it just over the protruding ribs with moderate-not uncomfortable tightness. Sleep in it nightly and wear it as many hours as tolerable during waking hours. Most of you describe the flare on the left side-this is the most common side for a rib to flare. My son has a right side flare with extreme bony prominences on both ribs and a hard hook shape on the back or underneath, if you will, of his right rib which we learned could lacerate his liver if he gets ht playing contact sports! Anyway, if you are looking for someone to see about this condition-we had a phenomenal experience with Pectus Services- joe has helped over 3000 kids/young adults with rib flaring and pectus conditions without surgery and his before and after photos are amazing! We even met a patient in the waiting room who was 10 months post treatment and were stunned by the difference! I would highly recommend him-unfortunately for my son we are going to have to look into getting the hook shaved off of his rib before we can use Joe T at pectus services.....

I have a similar problem! My bottom rib on my left seems to be sticking out more than on the right, like I have too much bone. I've had it for a while and got a doctor to check it out, she said it would go away as I grew, but it got worse. It makes me really self concious and I don't want to wear bikinis or tighter shirts. Hopefully I'll be able to get some surgery to shave off the extra Bo e when I'm older!

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME THING! I'm a seventeen year old female and I've had this my whole life. I've always been pretty athletic and it doesn't seem to hurt but it is definitely noticeably abnormal. I don't know what to do about it but i don't like laying out to tan with my friends because it protrudes so much :(

you might have figured this out by now... But if it's painful and causes a loss of breath then more likely than not its caused by severe scoliosis. After your growth spurt just before puberty or during the beginning scoliosis usually appears and in severe cases it twists the spine causing a protruding rib or ribs.

My son is now 14 years old has mild cp and visits the specialist every 6 months. When you see him he looks totally normal except for a little limp no walker no cruces just a foot brace. Now last year we saw a slight protrusion on the lower right side of the ribs and naturally I called his doc and they saw him and said it would be monitored for now due to it could be a growth spurt and he is starting to catch up from the left side (his affected side). So about a month and a half ago it got more pronounced and at the xyphoid process it started to barrel in a bit. I called the nurse at the clinic and she said to just monitor until his appt which was today. When they saw him I told them he did have a growth spurt but that was three months ago. And now he has severe stretch marks on the mid back on top of the spine and of course he has the protruding ribs . Upon looking they referred my son to the thoracic Surgeon at the hospital he's Seen by. They aren't telling me much but I am worried of course any info on similar symptoms please let me know what it might be they are talking to me on possible surgery and poor guy has been thru so much already with cp I hope we don't have another huge obstacle to battle. Anything for research is appreciated.
