I choose Mirena as my birth control in October 2008 after the birth of my first baby. Two weeks of having Mirena, I noticed my hair
began to come out every time I comb my hair. It really concerned me :'( because a woman's hair is her glory ! RIGHT... I didnt think that it could be Mirena at all. I had Mirena removed in July 2010 because I want to have another child. It is August 2010 I have made an appointment to see my physican because I notice my hair is comming out every time I comb it. So I am wondering is this a side effect of Mirena :-| ....If it is then I will certainly chose another birth control in the nearer future...I'm considering "ESSURE" this is NEW and PERMANENT birth control....dont have to worry about getting pregnant and continue to have your period ...this is what Im searching for without the SIDE EFFECTS XD

Mirena DOES cause heart palpitations, panic attacks, and sleep issues! I had it and within 2 weeks, I experienced all of these things. I called the Dr's office and was told at first by the nurse that it was not the cause of these things. I thought I was going crazy. Then I called back and a Dr told me the only way to find out was to have it taken out, so that is what I did. By week 3 I had it removed and the side effects went away. So, when in doubt, have it TAKEN OUT! Please for your sake and your childrens sake, don't wait and continue to live with these horrible symptoms!

My nineteen year old daughter had her IUD put in recently. I have noticed she has had the side effects that the doctor warned of, irregular bleeding and some light cramping. However, she was researching side effects because she had a light period. A few hours after reading all of this she said her arm was feeling numb and she was having a hard time breathing. I read what she had and no freaking wonder. I guess she is scared to death now and more than likely the sudden onset of these symptoms immediatly after reading them is anxiety.

I would like to make you all aware that I am 39 years old and have had two children. I have never had an IUD and I have had almost every single symptom that you are all talking about. Having children changes your body in many not so great ways. I had never had an anxiety attack, not one day of PMS, no heart palpatations, mood swings, lack of sex drive on and on. However, I did have migrains before my first child. My doctor said that having children could stop those or could make no difference.

After my first child PMS kicked in with a vengance along with terrible cramping, naseau and pain! I thought I was going to go crazy every month! I also felt pregnant every month with the nausea, bloating and weakness. The miagrains however did stop. Then once I had my second child, I had depression for a while, completly normal... My miagrains returned and I also bled to such excess that I was anemic all the time. Then I started having anxiety attacks. The anxiety attacks increased and of course signs of an attack are light headedness, numbness in the arms and hands that my be accompanied by tingling and a feeling that you cannot swollow. Stress can cause anxiety in anyone and all mothers know that there is nothing more stressful than a family! Anxiety and depression are also pretty common disorders!

I think all of this is misleading people to think that an IUD is the root of all that ails them. These things are common among most women, not just those that had an IUD. I agree that everyone will not tolerate things the same way and some people cannot use an IUD. However, the symptoms you are describing are normal for most women at sometime, and perhaps long term, in thier life, especially after having children. If you want to remove it, more power to you. It's your body. However, don't be surprised if all of these symptoms do not go away. They haven't for me and again I have never had an IUD.

Well you can say that a women may experience these symptoms at some point in her life but it is not just a coincidence that it occurs right after the insertion of an IUD. I had mine in for 2 weeks and the symptoms came on. I had pain in my left arm and shoulder as well as the heart papitations and anxiety. After having it in for 3 weeks I had it removed and all those symptoms went away. If your daughter started experiencing these things right after the IUD ws put in, then it is the IUD that is causing it and not just her time in life to experience these things. She should have it removed to rule it out. Sure you had these symptoms without ever having the IUD but the timing of her symptoms deosn't seem like a coincidence to me. Obviously it is up to her, but I would have it removed and see....or live with these crazy symptoms for years like some did on here and they regret living like that for so long when they could have just had the Mirena removed and been done with it and feeling better.

She did not experience these side effects as soon as the IUD was put in. She experienced the side effects as soon as she read all of this. She hasn't had any anxiety or tingling since. Of course, she hasn't been back to the site either. I told her that if she has any questions or concerns that her Gyno is the place to take them. I would rather her go to somone with an education and degree to get her information. By the way, her Gyno has an IUD as well. So, she should be an even greater source of information without a doubt!!

If my daughter decides she would like the IUD out, I will support her just as I should. However, she will in the end do what is best for her. That is her body and her decision. I am glad that I raised her to seek information and knowledge to make her own decisions. After talking with her she agreed that her Dr. is her best source of information and she can make an intelligent and informed decision based on the conversation she has with her.

I always think that getting information, even if it is from some place like this, is a good idea. Knowledge is power. However, I hope that all you women discuss the problems you are experiencing with your Dr. You should also let them know about the other women having the same problems that you are. If there is a chance that your health is being compromised someone other than us need to know. However, your decisions should not be made with fear but with facts!!

I decided not to read anything on the internet before I had my IUD put in because everyone is different. I know two peple who had the Mirena IUD and loved it so that along with the information pamphlet from my OB-gyn helped me to make the decision to get it put in. To insinuate that people get these symptoms simply from reading about others' bad experiences is ludacris. And you can say that people shouldn't base their decisions on fear, but one must always be cautious about what they put into their body. Your OD may have an IUd herself so obviously she is one of the people who had no bad sife efffects. But just because she has one doesn't mean she can say that all people who get it will be like her and have no problems. Everyone's body reacts differently. I had good experiences with certain birth control pills yet I have read some people's comments on sites about horrible side effects they have had. I just don't think it is worth putting your life or mental health at risk by keeping an IUD in because others tell you there is no way the problems you are having are from the IUD. I think everyone needs to think and use some common sense. I wish the best for your daughter on whatever she decides.

Good for you! Don't we always hear that we know ourselves and our bodies best? So why do so many women second guess themselves? I think it is great that you recognized new symptoms and instead of just continuing to blame a guy or life in general, you thought about it and could see that possibly it was the Mirena IUD. Good luck to you once you get it out. I am sure the symptoms will stop for you.

Well...If my body is going through 'the change' as a 22 year old has commented then so be it. I had mirena put in just over a month ago because after perinatologist and other specialist conclusions, I am done having the babies and I don't want any surprises. The IUD: I am getting it out. It isn't worth it. Headaches, nausea, depression, and the panic attack can all go thank you. I write this because it has been two years since I have been on anti-depressants and I was on those for many horrible years. I was just feeling full, and grand and complete before this went in... I know enough to trust that I am not a hypochondriac and this is just another horrid drug. I also went on this because of wicked periods. Do I now have to take five other drugs to balance out this pittiful one? I am so tired of having to be slave to 'what drug next' and trying to convince myself to 'stick it out'. It is WONDERFUL that it works for some but please ladies don't bash the ones that have the guts to say this is @#!$ because we already try to convince ourselves too many times in our lives that 'it must just be me'. The drug companies have the statistics. Did you read those information sheets? Ha! It is all there. I read them and still couldn't believe I was getting it. Yeah, so we can already be moody don't blame it on a drug? Please. Shake your head little one ;-)

It is common for women to get cysts. They are caused by hormones and especially with the IUD suppling more hormones most likely there is a cyst. They come and go. When they go, they burst causing cramping and discharge.
Hope this helps!

I had my Mirena removed today. The medical staff indicated that i was the first to present the issues that i was. I am 41 yo and have never had children. I am well aware of menopause and pre menopausal situations, however, that is not was I was experiencing. I had it placed at the end of July 2010. I have been bleeding since. I had three days of freedom so to speak from bleeding. I had a stabbing pain on the right side of my head on the top one evening that woke me out of a sleep. I was unable to go back to sleep for some time. Additionally, I would be walking and all the sudden experience severe abdominal pain for no known reason. This occurred at least three times per week. My energy was lower than previously as well. I would get the normal hormonal headaches that would become more painful at probably what my body considered my usual menses cycle. Sometimes I would feel like my eyes were bouncing back and forth (when I know in fact, they were not). I was more emotional than I was in the past too. At any rate while in the office, they were asking me all kinds of questions indicating that the headache and dizziness were not caused by the Mirena but by my now high blood pressure which read 150/114 at the MD office after they had been grilling me for 10 minutes about the unheard of symptomology I was presenting. Did I mention my hair was coming out every time i put my fingers through it? Oh yeah and the day I was to have it removed, I got up out of bed in the morning to feed my cat and let the dog out and I was so dizzy that I fell into the bed twice? But that is due to high blood pressure....Now they have called my primary MD and I have to get checked out for my blood pressure issues--that were non existant prior to this.....So this is all after six weeks?? Oh and one more thing, 6 pound weight gain in 6 weeks when i am highly active and jog minimum of 1.5 miles daily and watch my nutritional intake? Hummm..... I am thinking this was not for me. Be very leary when introducing something into the body that is not natural. I am hoping not, but you never know, there may be something irreversible that has occurred here....Age may have something to do with it, true, but make no mistake, when it was not meant to be in the body, maybe it should not be introduced......
