'did you find an answer to your pain and swelling ? My mother had the same thing happen to her and the Dr. is not sure what it is but she can't use her hand at all and her arm and hand are swollen and painful .

For years I have had these same symptoms! I get no sleep, I swear, I cry, I pace at night trying to get my hands to wake up, hang my hands over the bed, hot water, cold water, hand braces, I have tried all kinds of medications. Even the good pain medications don’t work. And no one can understand what you’re going thru especially at 4am. I am 29years old and my body feels like it’s going on fifty.. My hands go numb around 15 times a day.. Reading, driving, watching movies on the couch ect. At first, it was only at night and just a little numbness in my left thumb. Then out of nowhere I rip my trigger finger. Don’t even remember doing anything to it. As it progressed, came the burning and more frequent excruciating pain. Ugh just miserable. For the last 2 years I have been in search for answers. I have been to multiple doctors. I have had multiple cortisone shots. Miss diagnosed several times. First, of course was Fibromyalgia.. Basically, they don’t know what’s wrong with u so they have decided to call it that. Then, I was diagnosed with lupus.. Wrong again. Recently, I finally found a doctor that ran the correct test. I have a rare auto immune disease disorder called: MIXED CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASE. Which by the way is not curable.. The test that was run was an ANA test. I highly recommend if u have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia u have your doctor run this test and do some research.. Although, I finally figured out what is wrong with me and am on medications. I still experience the exact same issues. Hence why I am writing this post at 2am.. The doctor says the medication will take a few months to kick in.. But after being in so much pain for so long u don’t want to wait another second. The last year, I had noticed my elbows starting to look weird. The doctor says I have nodules growing on both of them. Which have become bigger and more painful. Although, I have been diagnosed correctly this time.. I feel like I’m going in circles. Trial and error. It’s a toss-up between Peripheral Neuropathy, Carpel Tunnel, Raynaud’s Disease, a pinched nerve somewhere, or tendonitis of the elbow. I’m having a hard time narrowing it down since most of these things have the exact same symptoms. Please help..
If I helped at least one person find the name of their disease tonight then all this typing was well worth it and hopefully u find a doctor smarter than mine so we can all help each other. Best wishes to all of you.

Out of curiosity, have you been tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis? The nodules on the elbows made me think of that. Good luck and hope you get better soon!

I'm 65 years old and have been extremely active all my life with gardening and do it yourself projects. I love to work with wood, building furniture etc.  For the past years I have had the burning pain and numbness in both hands and aching elbows and forearms at night. Seems I am no longer able to work or use my hands for even the simplist tasks, such as carrying plastic grocery bags or turning a screwdriver. Oh! the burning that causes.  The only relief I get is to give my arms and hands a vacation from just about everything but operating the tv remote.  Please keep searching for answers to our problems. Your posts have been enlightening. God Bless

In regards to the last posts.Thank you for your post..Yes, Recently I was tested for RA and the test came back negitive.. Although, i do have alot of those symtoms. That's when they found the mixed connective tissue disease. I went to hand specialist last week and had a nerve test done i found out that i have sever carpel tunnel!!! Today my whole wrist has swollen up and by hands have been extremly numb, painful and burning..to where i couldn't stand it anymore..ended up in the er. when i was a kid i remember older people talking about how they had carpel tunnel.. I had no idea it was this painful.. i can't wait to have this surgery over with so i can sleep.. They gave me a nerve blocker but i have yet to feel that it blocks anything..lol how ever i am in better spirits knowing that surgery can possibly help..

I am 33 years old and 2 weeks ago I woke in the middle of the night with a severe pain in my left hand from the tip of the fingers (index and middle finger) to the elbow. Even my nails are sensitive when I have pain and fingers tips fall asleep. There is no medicine to stop the pain. The neurologist found nothing; she said that it is possibly suffering from tendinitis and gave me a pass to a different neurologist or a Physiatrist, he perform an electromyography (EMG), which came out normal. Then they give me pass to an orthopedic specialists, after seeing the rays x said they were normal. The diagnosis was: Carpal tunnel syndrome but neither my nerves nor bones show evidenced, therefore said that it may be the start of it or maybe Raynaud's. I have to wait six weeks before returning to the doctor if there are no improvements. For now the only thing that helps stop pain is warm water. So I get of the bed every 2 hours at night (when hurts more) go to the bathroom and just let the warm water run on my hand. For the past 2 week I have it sleep for more than 2 hours that means that my mood change, I’m tired all day and if I don’t sleep good I get up with a really bad migraine, basically affects my life, plans and relation with my husband and family. Specially now, we are trying to get pregnant so it is really disturbing that we have to deal with this right now. 

I have the same problem with my hands. It helps to wear wrist braces while you sleep.

I have been having the same symptoms and problems as everyone else has mentioned. The one thing that helps me somewhat is I use an ace bandage and wrap first my middle 2 fingers about twice together and then i wrap it once including my pinky and last of all I wrap my pointing finger and then use the rest to just wrap them all. Do not wrap tightly because this will make them hurt worse when they swell, by doing this it seems to help me from clinching my fist when I'm a sleep and it does seem to help them a lot. I didn't realize it but when they would first start hurting I was clinching them tight and that would then make them hurt worse. My Fiance stayed awake and watched me doing this and suggested I try wrapping them so I did. I still have some nights that are real bad but for the most of the time this helps tremendously. I hope this helps everyone as much as it has me; good luck to you all.

I have had this chronic pain for at least a decade now.  It comes and goes in waves, and the best way to treat it is aerobic exercise and deep massage.  I hate exercising and cannot afford expensive massages.  I took at least 8-10 advils everyday.  I drank heavily to numb pain, as well as smoked marijuana to at least give me a solid two hours of sleep from the pain.  Through a network of friends and like-minded women, I had found roller derby a few years back. I discovered that if I skate at least 30 minutes continuously, at least a couple times a week, if not more, really helped.  I work as a cook, which requires repetitive motion, awkward posture, standing on my feet at least 8 hours a day hunched over, and being under height at 5 feet tall in this industry, has thrown a kink everywhere.  And you'd think, why would I want to exercise after doing all that?  Well, I get the best sound sleep the day I exercise.   I wake up completely recharged, and limber to get back into the grind.  Some days, that tingling and pain is just as intense when I'm awake.  It's bad enough not being able to sleep, but even worse when you're crabby from pain you feel helpless from.  I invested in a dense foam roller that can be purchased at Target or Sports Authority, even Bed Bath and Beyonds have them.  They're generally around $20 and comes with a dvd or booklet on how to use them.  It's basically a counter point to stiff muscles using your own body weight to relieve tension.  Like, if you took a rolling pin, but used it on your back, neck, legs, etc.  My problem area is my neck and arms.  I would lay on the foam roller, positioning it near my armpit/ shoulder blade area, and lay on my side applying pressure, mimicking a deep tissue massage.  It does wonders.  Get one with a dvd, and don't go balls out at first.  You may injure yourself if you are unable to control your balance and weight, so a general sense of stability is good.  I'm not a thin person, and my breasts are rather huge for my frame, which adds to the awkward posture and how my body moves throughout the day.  It's important to understand your body, understand pain, and how to find the perfect balance to deal with chronic pain.  I refuse to take pills and drugs to alleviate pain anymore.  I truly believe the body is a machine you need to understand and make it work for you.  Take care everybody, and I hope you get some sleep!!

Hi! I been getting the same exact thing, except the elbow thing.
IM A FACE DOWN,sleeper, and I get up at night with a pain, that I can only describe as " my hand is going to explode, I hold my breath, shake it....walk and pray for it to stop!
I'm scared to go to the doctors , cause I'm overweight and I'm scared, even tho I'm only 29, that there goimg to say it's diabetes or heart desise

I had no idea this is so prevalent.  Long story ... short.  This began four weeks ago, my sleep cycle is about four hours until the number and wrenching pain begins, I get up and work and it takes a few hours for total relief.  When I first get up, the analogy is being a kid with frozen hands, and while the blood flows back into the hands, it is extremely painful ... I have shed a tear or two.

I go to pain management for other knee issues, and this came out of the blue.  My recent neck MRI only indicated slight bulging which should not be causing this, according to the docs.  I have an EMG set for Friday, I'll see how that turns out.  If nothing, what's next?  Not sure.  I'm convinced I have a great UVA pain studies and management doctor along with other doctorial credentials.

But in the meantime, this hurts like crazy and my hands tingle a bit throughout the day.  Good luck all!  If I get the golden bullet, I'll pass on ... my gut tells me impingment in the elbows.
