I've been dealing with this problem on and off for years. As a kid, I would get strep throat 3-5 times a year but every time my doctor would say "if she gets it again within a few months, we'll take her tonsils out", I would get better for a while. Hence, still have my tonsils. As a baby, I also always got what they told my mother was Coxsackie, a virus similar to foot and mouth disease fron what I understand.
I probably have the current symptoms (sore throat, usually on one side, sore tongure, and very swollen lymph node on one side of my neck) about 3 times a year and go to the doctor once in a while for it hoping for a clue as to what it is and how to treat it. Sometimes they give me an antibiotic (even though the Strep test ALWAYS comes back negative) and other times they say "it's a virus, garggle with salt water and take Tylenol but there's nothing more you can do".
The most reasonable explanation I've gotten goes along with the virus theory but my doctor pointed out that these adult symptoms seem only to have started after I had mono about 10 years ago. He said the virus stays in your system for YEARS and although you're not contagious and it's not actually mono recurring, you can still develop some of the symptoms. Always go to the doctor if you're sick, but in my experience, unless you have a fever or a Strep culture comes back positive, they're just going to call it a virus and tell you to deal. That being said, if anyone else gets more info, please post! I'm convinced that my chronic Strep as a child, the Coxsackie, and this current condition is all somehow related. Maybe I could bring something new to my doctor's attention that he's overlooked in the past.
its not super difficult. but its not any fun.
Sitting in bed now with aches and pains all over and a massive white lump where i think my throat gland is. Im in massive pain and i dread the next time i have to swallow saliva everytime!
Im actually quite scarred as iv never gotten anything this bad before :(
can anyone else confirm this 100% pommegrannet juice theory?
This exactly what I have right now! Even the wisdom teeth part. I felt my wisdom teeth coming in on the right side of my mouth and could only chew with the left side of my mouth as it hurt too much otherwise. The left side of my neck started to hurt a lot five days ago to the point where I couldn't turn my head left but only last night did I look in the mirror and realise my neck was swollen on the left side. I pretty much freaked out. I went to the hospital today and they first thought it was mono too but after taking blood tests that said it wasn't mono but rather an infection of the neck and gave me some anti-inflammatory drug called clarithromycin. How long did it take for the pain and neck swelling to go away?
