I had tapping for a couple months recently thinking it was tinnitus and felt hopeless after everyting i read online but I finally went to the dr. and he prescribed Nasonex (which made me laugh inside) but when you're desperate you'll try anything. Well lo and behold two days later it was finally gone. Last night when i woke up through the night I started hearing it again ,,, guess it's time for another round of snorts. I have never used a nasal spray before this. I hope you had success.

Thanks for the insight Erb41792. I have exactly this problem with my left ear. When there is a source of low frequency sound such as a large diesel engine my left eardrum clicks until I can get away from the sound. Nobody else can usually hear this sound and I have been wondering what it was for avery long time.

You need to go to an ear nose and throat doc but I got info on wikipedia on a condition that is causing the tapping sound in my right ear. It is called palatal myoclonus or spasm of the roof of the mouth causing that noise. there is no cure and treating the symptom does not get to the cure but improving your health can. Stop ingesting alcohol, caffeine (also in chocolate, tea, and coffee), sugar of any kind, and improve your diet with proteins of lean meats, fish, chicken without the skin, fruits and veggies. Take a multi vitamen/mineral tablet, and drink alot of water. If it persists I would be tested for food allergies. Drugs have side effects and are often no effective. Good luck to both of us.

I found the following quote from this doctor.  This is the first answer that makes any sense.

This clicking is called MYOCLONUS...

Those three tiny ear bones in your middle ear (the area on the other side of your eardrum) have muscles (the stapedial and tensor tympani muscle) that are attached to them. Like any muscle, they can go into spasm and rapidly twitch (myoclonus). When this happens in the ear, it will cause the eardrum to vibrate like a drum, resulting in a clicking or even a machine-like sound. The muscles in the throat and palate (the tensor veli palatini muscle) can also be contributory.

This is not an easy problem to fix. Surgery is sometimes performed to cut those muscles, or the muscle-paralyzing botulism toxin (Botox) is injected into them in an effort to correct more serious cases. An ENT sub-specialist (a neurotologist) is the best person to evaluate and manage this difficult-to-treat disorder.

Give your muscle relaxants a good trial...perhaps a month if you can. I am not sure what you mean by politzeration, but if you are speaking about pressure equalization by holding your nose and blowing, this will not likely help.

I am not a big fan of massage or acupunture for this particular problem since it has not been scientifically proven to help. It may help your stress, however.

the tapping noises could be caused by spirits around you ( they do this as a form of communication )
i have spirit around me and have experienced this for years
look for other signs of spirit for clarification such as tapping on window, tv banging, shivers etc

I also have the same thing. I have had the ticking for over a month now and the ringing for a couple of months. It's to the point now that my right ear ticks constantly and both of my ears ring constantly also. Everyday it gets worse. I also have tried everything to at least take care of the clicking, but to no availe. I finally went to the doctor the other day and she couldn't find anything. I now have to wait to go to the ENT next week (if I don't go insane by then).

I have had a noise in my ear for some time too. It sounds like water dripping onto a hard surface. It gets so loud sometimes that it wakes me up from a sound sleep. I have used wax removal kits and no luck. I asked my primary care Dr and he said he sees no wax. I guess I need to see an ENT next.

I am an audiologist, not an ENT doctor. To the person who hears a sound like a heart beat, go to an ENT doctor. There is something called a glomus jugulare tumor, which is almost always benign. One of its symptoms is a sound like a heart beat in the ear. It can be taken care of, but go to a good doctor to rule this out, because it can be dangerous if left alone. As for persistent tapping sounds which are not like a heart beat, I am not sure what that is. However, years ago I noticed what sounded like fast clicking sounds in my right ear, intermittently. I thought perhaps a bug had gotten into my ear. A very knowledgeable ENT doctor told me it was a reflex. A can't remember if it was a stapedial reflex or a tensor tympani reflex, but it was nothing to worry about. I'm not sure if what people are describing as tapping is the same thing that I had.

google myoclonus. Comes in different forms: inner-ear myoclonus, tympanic myoclonus and palatal myoclonus all give the symptoms described above by all of us.

There is a way to stop the clicking that works for me for a short time. Hold your nose and suck the air out of your ears. This pulls the eardrum inwards slightly and my clicking stops. If you don't swallow it will stay still for a while.
I think that I will have to go and see about it as it is getting worse. Last night I had to endure some low frequency sound all night however when I got away from the source this morning my eardrum continued to click.

I also get this tapping. Sounds like Morse code...series of 2-4 taps at a time, and repeats constantly. Wish I knew what it was...it's annoying
