I had bunion surgery and hammertoe surgery on May 3. I have a plate and screws in the big toe bone and I had a pin in the second toe with the hammertoe. My pin was removed after 5 weeks. I was afraid of how it would be removed but he just pulled it out and it didn't hurt. I am not pleased with the way my big toe looks but if it feels better once I am completely healed, I can live with it. I think 2 weeks is too soon.
I had claw toe on the second toe left foot claw is when both joints in the toe are bent. My first surgery was april 12th 2013. I had my metatarsal shortened and my tendon lengthened its now held in place with a screw my dr. didn't tell me about until about 3 weeks after my first surgery.I had stiches from tip of my toe to mid foot. I also had my toe joint shortened some at the first joint. My dr. opted. for a permeate pin without talking to me about it. This pin would have to be removed with another surgery!!! My stiches were removed a week later. When I got home i noticed the bottom of the incision area was opening! I called the dr. office but everyone had left for the weekend. I called the emergency number at the surgery center I went to and she said if it was bleeding badly to go to the hospital. I didn't feel it was gushing out just open so I waited until Monday and went in to the dr. he said the best thing to do was just leave it alone to heal. I guess lucky for me this first surgery didn't work! I had another surgery when the dr. realized my toe was still bent on May 6th 2013. this time he reopened the stiches on the toe area only. Those stiches healed and were removed a week later and I was still having trouble and pain from the area that broke open on my foot. The dr. said it was healing but because it broke open it would take a lot longer to heal! I should have gone to the hospital I guess. So I had my new stronger pin that stuck out the tip of my toe in for just over 6 weeks. This was very painful and I couldn't walk without pain. I couldn't wear shoes because the pin stuck out of my foot about 3/4 inch. I was told to heel walk which was painful to my foot and my knee and leg. (like having a bad blister its painful in the foot area also) Finally today I had the pin removed. I had to argue with the dr. about my soreness/pain levels and fight for a small amount of pain management for the pin removal. It did hurt but it was removed quickly 6 seconds or so. My toe and foot are very sore right now. The tip of my toe is bleeding pretty good I've gone thur 2 band aids so far. I do feel more positive now that all the pins are out of my foot. all that remains is the screw with could stay in permanently. I hope the pain stops as it heals my next apt. is in 6 weeks. I would not go thur this surgery again on my other toes!
I had two toes done and both had pins had stitches out in 3 weeks and just got pins out Friday and only one toe had a fast pain and he put band-aid over tops of each with little blood was able to walk out on. I also did not go to sleep for mine I had as out patient he numbed them and I felt nothing and was able to come home. was there at 7:30 a.m. and home by 10 a.m. I am happy to be with out the shoe and to take a shower,he says in side is still healing but I can wear shoes again. and 5 weeks is a long time....
Good morning, just read your problem. I would call your doctor and explain what is happening, and possibly may have an exray .taken, if this is allowed ,to get to the bottom of your problem. Also a patient of similar surgery, have no problems of recovery
Hi, I would have to say "YES" the pins were removed to soon, the stitches 2 weeks after the surgery, is okay. Right now are all your toes straight, for it take s8 weeks to form, then the pins can be taken out, you are looking about another 3 months of recovery. All total from your surgery date, It takes 6 months.
Sincerely
J.E.T.
It's been a year since your post. I had bunion surgery and two hammer toes repaired almost 5 weeks ago. The surgery itself was not that painful. They gave me a knee block during the initial surgery. That made everything numb from the knee to the foot for almost 3 days. I did not feel pain while the pins were being removed. About 20 minutes following the surgery it began to hurt. It is now 4 days since the removal of the pins and I am still on pain meds. I feel a lot of tingly pain in my foot, sharp pains as if I am being shocked. I am nervous that this is not normal to be in pain by just removing the pins. If you have experienced this please reply. Monday I will be calling the doctor.
I had to wait 5 to 6 weeks for my pin removal..
I had hammer toe surgery on 3 of my left foot toes , the 3 middle ones if that makes sense.
surgery may 9th 2014 , stitches out May 20th , pins out June 5th ( this week ) 27 days after my surgery , it has been a real easy experience , I stopped all meds after 2 weeks as I was In no pain and the codiene was giving me bad headaches . I'm looking forward to having my pins out, but apprehensive but thinking about the end result !
My my question is what happens after the pins are out ? Do I still wear the boot or move on to
sneakers , flip flops? Will I need crutches to walk ? Can anyone share their experience post pins ?
many thanks

Go to therapy for your foot, I did it helps!
I have had hammertoe and bunion removal actually twice. First time had both at the same time, about 20 years ago. No pins, very, very painful and took months to heal. Had rt foot done again 9/25. 10/10 stitches come out. Pins a few weeks later,so probably all n all about 4-5 weeks. The podiatrist I have now is fabulous, hardly any pain and the pain medicine usually takes care of this. The only complaint I have is dr says no walking around. Foot up w ice. ICE will be your best friend! I know many people hate to use It due to inconvenience but it will be sooooo worth it. Helps w swelling which causes severe pain. Get 2 ice packs and rotate. I love my ice packs! Also, don't think u r being brave by not taking the pain meds, it is better to take on time every time cuz once the pain starts it is harder to get under control again. It takes time to heal but will be worth it if u have a good podiatrist. Hope this helps, I tried to cover all I could think of.
I had the surgery 4 weeks ago today, both feet. Walked in boots, on my heels for the first two weeks. Now I can walk a little more flat-footed. I have pins in three middle toes of both feet, with stitches on small toes also. Very little pain or discomfort. Kept feet elevated - toes above nose - dr says he has never before seen such little swelling. Had sutures on bottom of feet - that was a bit uncomfortable having them removed. Dr. says pins will be removed at 7 weeks. When I go for my appts he unwraps, checks, rewraps, and I am amazed at how great, and straight, my toes are! So far so good, and I would do it again. Waited about 8 years.
I had this surgery done about 3 years ago and I still cant' walk normally. When the pins were removed the one in my left foot broke the surgeon left the broken piece in my foot. I was told not to worry since the piece would never move. However, after all those years, going back and fourth to the doctor, I am still in a lot of pain and it seems to worsen. What can I do? Dose anyone have a suggestion?
