I suspected that I was bleeding through my rectum during my periods, but I wasn't sure until today. I am suffering from the worst headache. I get these headaches when I come on and when I go off. The headache before my cycle is not bad it's the one when I'm going off my cycle that's the worst. I feel nauseated, dizzy, and I feel like I can't catch my breath at times. I go through this every month. My doctor said I too need to lose weight, but come on this is ridiculous. Well this rectal bleeding is something new so I'll have to let him know and see what's up. Will post again when I talk to him. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there suffering with this.

I am 26 yearsold and have experienced the same thing since I was probably 16 or so. My doctor doesn't seem to think this is a problem and hasn't reccomended anything. But it would be nice to figure out why this is happening? However, according to the BMI I am not over weight, but where I should be..... so there is no tie with me there.

hey, i just want to say i have the same problem, i'm 19 and it started 2 months ago, i am slightly overweight (about 7 pounds).
I went to the doctor who looked like he was about 12 and didn't seem to have any idea what he was doing, he asked if i was wiping properly and suffice to say i believe i have more experience with taking care of periods than he has, so i told him yes, i was. i know it's not just from my period because there is a seperate blood stain (only a couple of drops) on my pantyliners. I am really worried about this, i have really bad luck with health (having had my gall bladder removed earlier this year) and the doctor wasn't reassuring at all. He just told me to come back if it happened again, which i can't because it's now the middle of my Uni exams and I really don't have the time. I did get a digital rectal exam but he found nothing. I really dont know what to do and am getting really worried. I may wait until i get back home to go to my Gp there after the exams finish...

I am SO glad I found these posts--just to know that I am not alone. I've had the problem for about 1 year now. I've had the colonoscopy and was told it was diverticulosis. But why would I bleed only right before my cycle and through my cycle? I have same symptoms as everyone is reporting--heavier bleeding rectally than vaginally some days, clots, and it feels like I have razor blades down there, not just after a bowel movement! I've even missed work over this issue! Luckily, I have no cramping/issues at all with my periods, just the bowel issue during my cycle. As prescribed by the gastro, I took metamucil religiously this entire past month and had the most consistent bowel movements and was holding out hope this period would be different----it's NOT! These posts are over 1 year old and no one has been given any answers? For reference, no, not overweight. I exercise, eat well. I've had 3 children and am done, so unknown if infertility figures into my issues.

Wow -- I am glad and scared that I found these posts. I am 35 - no children - and suspected endometriosis but other completely healthy weight is good BP good no diabetes. My family doctor even noted this is out of left field since I appear healthy. I had my very first experience this past weekend and I am being steered toward a colonoscopy and my OB GYN was even refusing to see me until my colonoscopy was completed. Thankfully I haven't yet been asked if I am wiping properly but I am sure that is coming. I am worried because I have a family history of uterine cancer and this really freaked me out. I also experienced occular migraines about 2 weeks prior but just chalked it up to stress or eye strain. I have only ever had an occular migraine once before during a sinus infection when i too the Zithromax -- that was scary too but thankfully i found someone who had experienced them prior explain to me what was happening and up until two weeks ago never had one since. I have an appointment with my OB GYN tomorrow but I do not have a whole lot of faith I will make any headway. I am considering going to a college campus that has a medical center around here -- I think they may be more sympathetic and curious than a typical OB GYN. I'll update you guys with my experience.

%-) I have had this same problem for a few years... I am overweight, have hemorrhoidal bleeding, I have one child miraculously conceived while suffering from PCOS (almost non-existant period) - I don't have menstrual bleeding for years at a time; I DO, however, get the period cramps and back pain, etc. I don't normally have rectal bleeding unless I have the 'ghost menstrual cycle' and it is only when I have a bowel movement. The bleeding is like my menstruation used to be - light in the beginning, heavy with clots in the middle and light toward the end. It's like I'm having my menstrual bleeding from my rectum! I've had a colonoscopy, nothing other than the hemorrhoids was found. This has been going on for so long, that I am now ANEMIC! I can go months without the hemorrhoidal bleeding. This January I started taking medroxyprogesterone to try to bring down my period. I'm supposed to take one pill a day for five days and about 2-7 days later get my period. It didn't come in January. I tried the pills again now in Feb., I should have gotten my period about two days ago... it still hasn't come BUTTTTTTTTT the cramps are here, the backache is here and the hemorrhoidal bleeding started two days ago with today so far being the heaviest bleed day. I don't know what to do about it! I eat lots of fiber and iron (MD's suggestion), it does not seem to be helping in the least. We want to have another child and with all this, it has not happened. We tried fertility help about three years ago ONE time and as soon as we tried it, since I'd been losing blood from the rectal bleeding I ended up in the ER with severe anemia and had to be given a blood transfusion... I need help and noone is apparently able to. All I can do is Pray for healing from the PCOS and the bleeding and the anemia. God heal me. :'( I trust in Your grace and mercy and continue to wait patiently for healing, in Christ Jesus name. Amen.

I am almost 29 and I have been experiencing rectal bleeding with my period since I was about 16. I have had 1 colonoscopy, a barium enema, several obgyn visits (off and on my period), and a vaginal ultrasound. My obgyn looked for fishers (little tears between the colon and the vagina) and found nothing abnormal. The only thing he suggested it was, was hemroids. He seemed to not know what it was either. It is very frustrating. I have no kids and fear that whatever this is has left me infertile. I was reading about endometriosis and it says that getting pregnant can cure it....

If anyone knows anything about it. Please post it!

I have the same problem for five years straight. It started five years ago after I had my second child and I thought it was because I had intercourse before my 6 week mark. But it continued and I just had my third child 3 months ago and it's still happening. I figured I'd done something wrong and was extremely embarrassed so I kept it to myself and my husband. I finally asked my doctor during and after this pregnancy about it and he said I need to see a colon specialist because he's never even heard of such a thing. I'm a little at ease to know I'm not the only one going through this but I really need to know what can be done to stop this. If I find out anything I'll be sure to post.

I'm also relieved to find this forum (just to know I'm not the only one with this issue). I noticed many mentions of hemorrhoids. I've only started having the bleeding issue since my small hemorrhoid seemed to become a little more irritated. I've been very fortunate not to really have any issues with the hemorrhoid - but with straining (I guess as I get older - I'm 43) I think I've irritated it. I believe that's possibly what started the past year or so of rectal bleeding. I notice the rectal bleeding when I have a bowel movement during my cycle. That is really the only time I notice it. It scares me, but I have no other symptoms. My cycle is pretty normal and I have 2 children in their early 20's. I have to admit - for a while I was even wondering did I wipe right...but that's because it was so randomly happening. If I ever find a reason or any help for my condition, I will certainly come back and share on this discussion. I appreciate the info you all have shared.

I AM 50 YEARS OLD WITH 2 KIDS 18 AND 23. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE I WAS 16. I HAD MY OBGYN CHECK AFTER MY CHILDREN FOR A FISSURE (WHICH IS A TEAR IN THE LINING ) BETWEEN THE VAGINA AND ANUS. THEY FOUND NOTHING. MY GASTROENTOROLIGIST CHECKED WHEN HE DID A COLONOSCOPY. NO LUCK. I JUST THOUGHT I WAS A FREAK OF NATURE UNTIL I DECIDED TO GO ONLINE. ALL DOCTORS AGREE IT IS HORMONAL FOR ME. I DO HAVE ULCERATIVE COLITIS I WAS DIAGNOSED 2 YEARS AGO WHICH CAUSES BLEEDING ALL THE TIME SO IF ANY OF YOU EXPERIENCE THAT GET IT CHECKED OUT RIGHT AWAY. GLAAD TO KNOW IM NOT ALONE WITH THIS MENSTRUAL THING.

Hi everyone. I'm 18 and I've had rectal bleeding during my menstrual cycle for the past 4 months. The first time, I did think perhaps I didn't wipe right so I dismissed it. However, I started to get worried when I noticed the blood stains on my underwear even when I was wearing a tampon. I wiped with the tampon on and there was no leaks, and after wiping the anus I realized where the blood was coming from. I weigh 109 pounds so I know for a fact that it's not happening for being overweight. I haven't told anyone about the issue because I was embarrassed and thought it was just me, but after reading these posts I'm extremely concerned. My greatest concern is that it might be endo. I hope I'm not infertile. Having children is the biggest thing I want in this world; it'd break my heart to find out I won't be able to :-( I don't have insurance so I'm not able to go to the doctor and have any tests done. I guess talking to my mom about it will be a good start. Then sometime in the future get it checked out and hope it doesn't get more serious :'(

ps
Thank you for the posts. They were all very helpful.

Hi everyone, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one either. I have suspected I have rectal bleeding during my cycle but I always chopped it up to my tilted uterus. I would wake up during the middle of the night and noticed I am extremely wet with a heavy flow and most of the bleeding was coming from my backside and for the longest I could not figure out why I had more blood towards the back than in the front. I have to wear up to 5 pads to bed or I would mess up my clothes and sheets. This has been going on for about 2 years. I just figured it out today 2-25-11 that I am really bleeding from the rectum. I am 40 wth 3 children, I was diagnosed with (polycystic ovarian sydrome) in 2005. I take glucophage for the condition but I am not a diabetic. I had my tubes tied in 1999 at age 30, every since then my cycle has been heavy and painful to the point were it feels like I'm having contractions. The pain is so great, I curl up in a fetal position on the floor, it feels like your in full blown labor. I explained my cycle and pain to the Doctor he said my uterus was contracting and he put me on celebrex it really help with the pain. But the medicine is really high, so he put me on birth control ('what a boomer, I already had my tubes tied) it really helped also, but because of a heart condition I was not able to stay on birth control. I plan on going to the doctor soon.

Hi everyone.

I am very suprised and overwhelmed to find this forum. I am 25 years old, married and about 180 pounds. Ever since I could remember I have been bleeding from my rectum during my menstral cycle so I thought it was normal--- until today.

My husband and I have been trying to concieve for the past few months. The first month, we got a postive pregnancy test and than a few days later it was negative- I understand things are so sentative that early and I assume it was a chemical pregnancy. At 4:00am this morning, I woke up because I felt that I had peed myself--- I went to the washroom to find blood and it continued for the rest of the day. My periods have been every 45 days in between cycles and today was only day 30, so I thought I may have become pregnant and miscarried because there was more blood than what is described in implantation bleeding.

Since I was unable to reach my doctor to discuss, I was rethinking all the quirky things about myself and I wondered if other bleed from their rectum during periods.... so apparently yes but we are not supposed to.

Ps. It breaks my heart to read two posts above- about the 18 year old girl that does not have insurance to go to a doctor to see what is wrong. I am terribly sorry to hear that. I live in Canada and am so grateful that doctor visits are covered, but when I go I will be sure to update as others have. I am glad to see that there are others sharing their stories especially about this type of situation.

Best of luck to all.
-D
