The member who responded first said that nausea associated with excessive burping could be a sign of stomach cancer, which is a false statement. One cannot be diagnosed with such serious condition based on one symptom, which is most likely an indicator of a more benign condition. The same person tried to correct the previous statement by saying that the more likely cause was a bad diet and sensitivity to lactose. He/she suggested the discussion starter to try going off milk and dairy for a week and see if this helps.
In his response, discussion starter said that he doesn't drink milk or like dairy products. He was worried at the possibility that it could be stomach cancer as the first responder suggested since he's only 16 years old. The discussion starter then mentioned an important thing that could be connected to the nausea feeling:
It all started a few weeks after I drank an obscene amount of vodka and went paralytic.
Clearly, drinking huge amounts of alcohol triggered this, but there was still a mystery why the symptoms last that long?
Another member joined the discussion suggesting the member who started it to get an ultrasound of the stomach, stating that it could be something to do with his gallbladder, such as gallstones.
Others joined providing their opinion on what could be wrong with the discussion starter. One member said that the same thing happened to him, adding that it could be a malfunction of lower esophageal or upper esophageal sphincter, a bundle of muscles that act like doors to the esophagus, preventing the food going in the lungs and acid and stomach contents from climbing back up. It is common in conditions such as acid reflux or GERD. This member suggested looking this problem up on the internet to find some helpful tips on how to deal with it. He also suggested that if the discussion starter wants a diagnosis, he should ask his doctor for a barium swallow test.
Another member mentioned achalasia, a condition opposite of GERD, in which the esophageal sphincter instead of being too open and letting acid up, is too tight and won't let the food down.
I had a Heller myotomy from a gastroenterologist trained in the procedure, and now I am fine.
One participant in the discussion said that her daughter had all the symptoms listed in previous posts, i.e. night time nausea, and after she got diagnosed with celiac disease.
We took her off all wheat products (you would be amazed at what it is in) and she feels 100% better.
Other participant had the same condition diagnosed.
The thing that helped me most was getting gluten out of my diet.
Another condition mentioned in the discussion as a possible cause for nighttime nausea was a hiatial hernia, in which the stomach starts to swell or protrude into the esophagus, to the point where food, liquid cannot actually make it down to where it should be and therefore has no other option but to come back up. It happens more often at night because when you lay down, anything that has no made it down, start to come back up. The member who reported this cause said that doctors told him/her to sleep either sitting up with pillows supporting him/her or elevate the bed with blocks to a 45-degree angle.
But, could nighttime nausea alone be a symptom of stomach cancer as mentioned in the first reply? Not likely.
-
I don't want to scare you but the fact that you have nausea associated with excessive burping could be a sign of stomach cancer.

What do experts say?
The person who started discussion reported a problem of being very sick at night that started after the episode of heavy drinking. So, could it be a hangover? It's possible, but typically, a hangover begins within several hours after you stop drinking and will end within 24 hours. The feeling of sickness that the discussion starter reported lasted for weeks. Hangovers can indeed continue for a couple of days in more severe cases or in times when alcohol withdrawal occurs. However, in an average hangover, symptoms do not last for more than 72 hours.
So, could it be some underlying condition causing nausea at night? More likely. There are many conditions that can cause nausea that can exacerbate at night. Digestive problems are considered the most common cause of stomach pain, discomfort, and nausea at night. Some of these were mentioned in the discussion.
Acid reflux
Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a ring of muscle that separates your esophagus and your stomach, is unable to close tightly after you’ve ingested food or fluids. This causes stomach acids to travel up into the food pipe, causing a burning sensation. Acid reflux often causes nausea, gas, bloating, sore throat, cough, and vomiting.
A number of factors can increase the risk of acid reflux, with excessive alcohol consumption being one of the most common. Other factors include:
- overeating, especially close to bedtime
- lying down too soon after eating
- eating spicy foods, etc.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
GERD is a common cause of nighttime nausea. The frequent burping and coughing associated with GERD can create nausea. These symptoms often intensify when lying down.
One of the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that can cause nausea is acid reflux, mentioned above. Another is indigestion, or heartburn, that can contribute to nausea especially when lying down.
Alcohol consumption may increase symptoms of GERD and cause damage to the esophageal mucosa.
Gastritis
Gastritis occurs when the stomach walls become irritated and inflamed, leading to a painful or burning sensation, as well as nausea, gas, and vomiting. Untreated gastritis can lead to ulcers, bleeding, and cancer.
Alcohol intolerance
In alcohol intolerance, your digestive system doesn’t process alcohol properly. You might also react to certain alcoholic beverages if you have a histamine or sulfites intolerance. However, alcohol intolerance is usually caused by a genetic metabolic disorder.
Symptoms
The most common and characteristic symptoms of alcohol intolerance include:
- Flushing of the skin on the face, neck, and chest
- Nausea
- Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) or heart palpitations
- Hypotension (lowered blood pressure)
- Hangover-like symptoms, including severe, throbbing headache and fatigue, that may last longer
Most cases of nighttime nausea are not a reason for immediate concern. However, if symptoms occur more than once a week or become long-term, a doctor should be consulted.
Treatment
The treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Lifestyle changes are generally the first recommended line of treatment. You may be recommended to:
- avoid or limit alcohol consumption (especially binge drinking)
- avoid overeating or eating close to bedtime
- elevate the head of the bed while sleeping
- avoid spicy or fatty foods, as well as coffee, or sugars
Your doctor may also prescribe over-the-counter medications, such as antacids and gas medications. If these steps don't help, additional tests may be ordered.

Discussion highlights
What symptoms have been reported?
- I get motion sickness in the car which I never used to and I feel like I'm going to be sick.
- I was nauseaous for 5 years at night thinking it was what I ate or acid reflux, several trips to the ER over the years and diagnosed each time with stomach flu finally went for a physical and told my dr and she began scans and blood tests.
- during 1st year in collegei had some chest pain which though to be acid reflux.
- he has always had stomach issues, but lately has picked up this night time nausea thing.
- Also, sometimes after dinner, it feels like my food NEVER goes down, like 4 hours later I still feel horribly full and I'm miserable, soooooo sick of this happening!
- I also have a lot of stress, and that may be causing some things.
- It's really annoying to live with and every night I'm almost sure I'm going to throw up.
- My mum has took me to go for heaps of blood tests, I went for a ultrasound, this drink test, breath test, and I have tried all these medications that never work, I try gaviscon every night and it still seems it dosent work, all these tests come out clear which is good but I need something to come up so they can cure it, seeing as alot of people have the same symptoms as me since 2008 probably even less, I think it's something thats doctors haven't found and whatever this is, it can't be found, I'm actually rely sick of it I can't talk properly to my friends I can't do sleepovers and my patents don't understand what it is like, I actually really wish that doctors find something, everynight since I was 12 I have cryed myself to sleep cos I think I'm gonna vomit, sorry to comment years later
- I feel sick all the time !
- Hi, I'm only 13 years old, I Have felt since I was 12 that I was going to throw up every night, I hate it so much!
- hi everyone i have been suffering from nausea and vomiting for over 8months, i had endless blood test scans, xrays of stomach, and i also had a camara up the bum and town the throat sorry cant member the names for them, but they found nothing apart from acid reflux but even on meds for that i was still sick all the time even lost 10kgs, i am the same as some of you girls i hated life soo much it is extremly hard to be that sick and have a 3 year old son at 20, the docters had no idea where to look nexts after i had my op and found nothing but reflux, i have been on ondansetron wafers for the over 8months that i was sick and it worked maybe first couple times then didnt work for me much and that is the strongest anti nausea you can get it is what cancer patients have, then i ended up in hospital once again with it i would have bad times where i would get the sickness and with that i would feel like i was going to faint but couldnt and i would get hot and cold flashes and would shake and feel very light headed so the last time i ended up in hospital with it i got admited for a week they gave me cyclizine and i fault having that and the 8mg ondansetron together would help, and then after a while i got to a very low point in life from it i then found out that the hole time a huge part of it was actually suvier anxiety i never new it could make you sooo sick and make you not even be able to get up from bed, so maybe also look into that cause i swor to my self it would never be that but after getting on the right meds i have found that i dont spew any more when i use to spew every other day now i dont spew but i do stil get alot of nausea but not like i did before so i think apart of it was anxiety but it cant be the ful reason cause i am still sick but i havnt end up in hospital with one of my very bad eposodes again so i do think that part was the anxiety but i do stil have nause and have had every test i can so i kind of just live with it now, but just be carefull cause when you take some meds for to long they stop working and that has what iv found with the ondansetron it eases it a lil but dosnt make me 100%, so maybe look into anxiety and depression cause you might not wont to no its that but it could be, but then there are so many diff reason for why you are sick but thats my story, i am trying to find more natural ways of helping with the nausea with out costing to much so am trying to work on what will work best for me, i really hope yours dose not last like it has for me and alot of the other people on here cause it really changes your life and just member if the sickness is getting you down and when you are exspceting it to come on at night and you get upset about it you could get anxiety and thats what could be making you sick from being scard of being sick is causen anxiety and then you are being sick because of that this is what i think mainly happend to me, all the best with finding out whats wrong to all the people with this is is truly horrible to go thorugh wouldnt wish it upon any one hope this give u a lil more to maybe look into to all the people on here, thanks for reading this novel haha :)

- I have been getting the nausea ever night myself.
- The nausea first starts with me when I'm ( sitting up ) watching TV.
- At about 10:00 pm I go to bed and usually fall asleep just fine, then about 3 hours later wake up with 'butterflies' in my stomach.

- He blew it off as indigestion but when he started to have severe pain as well, it was too late for them to treat it.
- My uncle just died with pancreatic cancer and the only symptom he had before the pain started was some upset stomach and excessive burping.
- I have been suffering with this night nausea for 5 years.
- Then your heart starts to race, then your head gets fixated.
- When you do this your body thinks its going into a minor stage of shock and starts conserving blood and only pumping it to your vital oragans, and SUPRISE, your stomach is not considered vital.
- So you lose blood supply, which relaxes this organ a little too much and that door thats supposed to stay closed at the top of your stomach starts flapping all around!
- Acid and whatever else is in your stomach either starts to come up your throat or gets pushed through without being broken down enough.
- I am a male age 60, On Dec 3rd I kept getting woke up like I was going to puke, sit up very fast on the edge of the bed.
- If I lay down the best I can do is about 1.5hrs before I wake up with the same feeling again.
- Never puked.
- As soon as I feel like I am going to doze off I wake up with the feeling to puke every time.
- I am drained of energy every day that it keeps happening and have no motivation to do anything because I have the pukey feeling all of the time but its worst at night or when I want to take a nap to get more than 3 hrs sleep a night.
- Every night around bed time my heart rate increases slightly and I’m nauseated.
- usually lasts for an hour.
- I would always drink quite a bit of water while I was laying down and every time I became incredibly nauseous.
- Then when we ran out of waters, I began to notice that every time I was not nauseous.
What diagnosis has been made?
- The only thing that helps 90% of the time is alprazolam (xanax) I have been diagnosed with GERD and IBS.
- I just found out that my blood sugars are high with the bouts of nausea.
- Turned out it was never stomach flu it was a large tumor in my right upper quadrant and when I laid down at night it pressed against everything and made me sick.
- I've seen doctor after doctor and they all told me its acid reflux
- I was diagnosed with acid reflux in my senior year.
- When I became well enough to tolerate a little solid food I was given a Gastric Emptying Test and I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis or delayed stomach emptying.

- I have been to the doctors twice and their prescriptions have twice failed.
- my doctor said that some sort of flap thing wasnt keeping the acid in my stomach when i lay down, but i think they were wrong since it now happens when i am sitting up.
- Thought it was an ulcer but finally told my dr and she did an ultrsound and found a huge tumor in the pancreatic junction and it had squashed the dueodeum and when I would lie down thats why the nausea got worse.
- It was removed and found to be attached to my colon and colon had to be resected so I recommend telling your dr all symptoms in case you have cancer or a tumor
- and the doctor thought it was related to stress.
- The doctors said nothing was wrong, but I knew something was up.
- I have had an upper GI and sonogram of all my organs and they have found nothing.
- I was put on Xanax (yeah, they thought it was panic attacks.
- Yeah.), Prilosec, Tagamet, Zantac, various antidepressants, etc.
- I went back to the naturopath and he said that my levels are so low that it was problem to strong he then put me on apple cider vinegar for 4 weeks the first 2 weeks I took 5ml every time I ate (this includes snaking) the 2nd 2 weeks I took 10mls every time I ate.
- They ended up giving up and putting it down as irritable bowel syndrome (which I’m sure was just a I don’t know what it is so I’ll give it a name so you’ll stop coming back) After seeing a naturopath he said it sounds like my body is not producing the right acid level he put me on Hydrochloric acid tablets.

- Also been told I hv ibs.i have low blood pressure.
- I went to the doctors and they said that it was acid reflux so I've been taking gaviscon whenever I've felt sick and I've also gone through 2 packets of tic tacs as I've found that mints can sometimes help my stomach settle while I'm out.
- im currently 19 years old and when I was 8 I got diagnosed with IBS, I suffer really bad with stomach cramps and sometimes constipation or diarrhea.
- The 2 years ago I started getting panic attacks, only got diagnosed with a panic disorder a few months ago, but due to my panic attacks I started not sleeping then got fearful of going to bed so would plan it out during the day until I got so stressed at night I wouldn't make myself feel physically sick, my only remedy at the moment to calm down my stomach at night now is to take my panic tablet, propanolol.

- Turns out I had a stomach ulcer and gastritis.
- I have ibs and I'm 17 and trust me it took a long time to find the issue but now I got it.

What helped relieve the symptoms?
- The only thing that helps 90% of the time is alprazolam (xanax) I have been diagnosed with GERD and IBS.
- A doctor many years ago put me on xanax.
- :) You need to take probiotics and digestive enzymes three times daily to help your GI system as you recover from the damage gluten has done.
- At the moment i am stuck taking gaviscon tablets everynight - which are rather expensive after a while.
- Eventually, about two months of near-constant nausea I tried Phazyme.
- I drink baking soda almost every night and I also take promethazine or a Zofran for the nausea.
- for promethazine and zofran, mine had no problem giving me prescriptions of it and I have no idea what I would do without it.
- pot, zofran, phenner gin, ginger ale, pept, ginger tablet, cold ice to the back of the neck, unisom, darkness, quiet are all in the arsenal.
- I end up giving him some medicine for nausea and he feels fine by morning.

- Everything going on with you has happened to me and I use zofran (I think it helps me just by mentally knowing its supposed to help but I'm on my last pill today).
- I take zofran too but doesn't help the best
- i am currently on acid reflex medicine but it has not work.
- I had to go to the hospital at LEAST once a week to get pills and injections and be hooked up to be fed on IV.

- A IBS tablet, buscopan.
- if I get up and take a Rolaids or something similar it usually takes the problem away.
- After a harsh round of antibiotics I retested for the bacteria and was negative.
- I tried Prilosec and Nexium and still suffered.
- The doctor diagnosed me with an ulcer and when im on meds i cope.
- Im also on the gaviscon thing.
- I was barren due to antibiotics and diet.
- Prilosec worked great for me, until it attacked my liver.
- It did get better a few weeks ago but now I feel really sick every night and the only thing I can suggest is anti sickness tablets like buccastem .
- Altosec 20th prescribed by your doctor
- Doctors had me on 40mg of Prevacid, then bumped up to 80mg, then prilocect 40mg, then bumped up to 80mg, then what finally worked was Nexium,(which they now sell over the counter, and never use to while I had my issue going on)
- I have found that zantac in the morning and ginger at night helps me.
- Don't take reglan;
- stick to domperidone.
- I went on protein pump inhibitor drugs like losec that limited acid production but still no real change.
- i've had good success with getting rid of constant nausea by taking a product called iberogast morning and night,
- Normally I have to just take 4 gas-x or a Zantac but it sometimes won't work.
- I take 2 Zantac every night but doesn't seem to do much help.
- I'm on Omeprozole & Zofran & take GasX & Alka Seltzer Chews as needed.
- When I was first dignosed my doctor and me take b12 vitamin shots.
- Digestive Enzymes, Probiotics and Magnesium should be taken every day.
- Doctors can prescribe stronger gaviscon that may be covered by a medical plan.
In conclusion
Nausea experienced at night is an uncommon symptom that may be caused by drinking alcohol, especially excessively. Most cases of nighttime nausea are not a reason for immediate concern. However, if symptoms occur more than once a week or become long-term, it could be a sign of an underlying condition. In that case, your doctor should be consulted for the proper diagnosis.
