I am having hernia surgery in a few days, based on your comments it seems like maybe i shouldnt. What do you guys think?
The more you delay the more complications would arise as overtime the hernia would increase in size
Five years ago I had bilateral hernia surgery, had the mesh put in. I went from my preteen years to the age of 21 with an ever-worsening, mostly painless but very awkward and uncomfortable, hernia. It started with a small growth in my scrotum, I remember when I was young thinking it could be a 3rd testicle. Over the years it got bigger. If I stood for a long period it would ache a little, I think it was the weight pulling on my scrotum. If I lied down with my knees up for a while, or had an erection, it would go away, as if disappearing into my pelvic region. By the time I was 21 it was almost softball-sized. The part is, all this time I never got it checked out. I was too embarrassed, on top of the fact that I was worried it might be a cancerous tumor or something like that.
Luckily my appendix almost perforated and had to be removed. At which point, I was told I had a hernia. Recovery time was pretty long, at least 2 weeks if I remember correctly, and I was in a lot of pain. There was still a lot of swelling for quite a while aster the surgery. I definitely thought that it wasn't fixed, that the mass from the swelling was still the mass from before. But eventually it went away.
Today I'm fine other than a loose scrotum and my testicles hang pretty low, unless I'm aroused, or cold. But that's because I lived with a mass in there for so long, my case is a little rare.

my fiance had laproscopic hernia surjury for an inguinal hernia on the right side. his right teste is swollen and seems to be filled with fluid. He says that it is painful to urinate. It seems the consistancy of jello. Our surgeon was ok but his staff leave much to be desired. I was wondering if maby the sac is just filled with a little blood and interstitial fluid or if it were something more serious. He seems to have developed constant stomach pain. Not just in the surgery location and has developed a low grade fever. We have called the Dr. several times requesting antibiotics but have been told that they are not necissary. I have asked the Dr's wherei work and they agree to a point. What do you guys think. I am at a loss, and am astonished at the complete disregard for my fiance's health that the Dr. has shown. Can anyone offer me som advice.
Had a left side Inguinal hernia repair one week ago at Shouldice hospital in Toronto Canada. They been repairing hernias the same way for 50 years with no mesh. I had little pain the first 2 days expect while getting up or out of bed but then things swelled up a bit and my lower back hurt and my left hip bone hurt bad on day 3. I am on day 7 and the back pain is 95% gone but still have some hip pain but not as bad.
My hernia was small and I had it operated on 2 months after I first seen it I do recommend Shouldice, I had to go in the day before the operation and stay 2 days after. I live in Michigan and have no health insurance. My bill came to $4250 Canadian...that was cheaper than anywhere in the states were they wanted to send me home the same day after they operated.
I update my condition next week but so far I am happy...I am 44 years old, male.

I had inguinal surgery done laparocopic and now am 1mo post op and have had nothing but level 10 pain with it! I have swelling where the hernia was and it is numb in that whole area. i have tried all kinds of meds from pills to now being on morphine patches. the pain is really bad and don't know what else to do! some where along the line i think someone messed up on my surgery! has anyone had these problems? My surgeon all ways tells me he cant do anything for me!! I need help
I have same thing and its been 3 weeks hard as a rock and the size of your fist
I had inguinal hernia surgery on my left hand side, about the 5th day after surgery there was a lot of swelling, it has gone down since but I am still very tender and swollen a little bit and this is week 6. I was discharged 3 weeks ago. I did take a huge turn in pain about 2 1\2 weeks after the surgery though. I walk all day at work and am on my feet 8 hours a day. my girlfriend is concerned about the bruising also. If it doesn't get better by the end of the week I may go see my doctor.
I had open surgery on my right side wih stitches about 9 days ago...I'm feeling great other than this swelling on the upper part of the incision...I'm a female so thats as far as it goes for me but much like yourselves everyone just keeps dismissing it as if its nothing...although i don't feel as if its nothing. So if anyone gets any info on this it would be great.
i just had a left inguinal hernia repair last Thursday. its Monday now and im feeling ok. except for the swelling of the cord connected to my testes. during the first few days after the operation i was able to walk but have to rest after a while. i've experienced most of the things you guys are mentioning here except the swelling of testes. mine is the same as the other one. only the cord and around the operated part are swelling. and the feeling of numbness. i applied cold compress to lessen the swelling. and pain relievers. those helps too.
Left inguinal surgery 2/20, last Friday. Involved a foot of intestine including colon. Doc was surprised. The only lingering challenge has been the scrotum swelling which I was specifically told to watch for on the post op orders. Only ice was recommended.
I got tired of feeling chronically kicked in the nuts and got to thinking about the situation. Here is what worked for me. I saw results in two days. I walk easier, sit easier and that upper pain in the abdomen from feeling like I've been kicked has lessened greatly. I am no doc, just got to thinking.....
1. Break out the briefs. The little guys needs support. Wear them 24 hours or more at a time.
2. Get off the heavy pain meds and throw down advil as needed. You will need it.
3. Get off your butt. If you are like me, I was lying around anticipating every move so I wouldn't move. Get up and get out. Don't forget the Advil.
4. If you can, sleep/rest with your legs slightly elevated. Sleep on a sofa with your legs on the arm rest. Don’t forget to support the calves in this position.
Hey, worked for me.

Wow. These stories are making me reconsider getting surgery...I was wondering if any of you kind folks could give me some advice. I am a healthy 23 year old male with a right inguinal hernia, it disappears when I lay down, but is no larger than a golf ball at its worst when I stand up. It very rarely hurts, maybe once a month I might experience a short period of discomfort, but nothing bad at all. I've had this for roughly 2 years now, but it never bugged me, but I decided to get it checked out just now. My surgeon says I can get surgery if I want, she wasn't really stressing either. I was thinking about getting the laproscopic surgery since it is apparently less painful. I can deal with pain, but my main concern with all do respect as any man would have would be my testicles, whether it be potential nerve damage or potentially having an effect on my sex life in any way regarding sensation, erections, etc. Again, pardon me if you may consider this vulgar or not, but does anybody know if there are any risk factors as far as the penis and testes are concerned? I'm not sure if I should just live with the painless hernia and risk further complications, or get it fixed and be in pain, with perhaps a risk of complications in the "groin" area.
I appreciate anybody's response! The thought of this is stressing me out big time.

I had my inguinal surgery April 13th and it is March 16th. I am healing ok as far as the cut goes. However my right testicle is not swollen but tender to the touch. I feel that it is the chord from the Testicle. I think it is the Vas Deverence (wrong spelling). I am about to go back to work in 2 weeks. 6 weeks recovery. I hope my testicles feel better because I drive lift truck and want to feel normal again.
Please respond to my e-mail.

In the interest of helping people and adding more and more information to make this helpful for people:
I had an open left inguinal hernial repair in a hospital in New Jersey recently.
have had a 'slider' hernia, which means that things used to be normal in the morning but used to fill up in the groin by 10 am- noon.
I never experienced pain, never even knew that my swelling was hernia.
I like a fool, just thought that this is it - this is how my body is made and then on an annual physical exam, my doctor who examined my nuts told me that I had a solid hernia and I needed to fix it right away.
My surgery took less than an hour.
I was on general anaesthesia because the doctor thought I would be in pain if I took a local.
There was a lot of swelling on the left spermatical cord going to my nuts and I figured there was a lot of fluid or tissue hanging loose around my sack.
On my first follow-up, the doc immediately asked me to switch to briefs and I hope they will help.
I was able to get up and walk in 20 minutes after I came to from the surgery, but the pain the first night was a b***h - so I resorted to oxy-codane as per Doc prescription.
I swore to keep away from it, but needed a full day of drugs on day 1 after my surgery (maybe 4 pills in all - every pill consumed with a 500 mg Tylenol)
It hurt like a b***h for the first 2 days, then life got back to normal.
Used Phillips Milk of Magnesia but was useless anyways.
Constipation is something that I truly hate even when life is normal, so I resorted to a known Indian (East Indian) medicine called as Trifala Churna - it is a bitter powder that is best consumed with warm water and the results on day 3 of my recovery were magical - I hit the pot immediately and have been regular from day 3 onwards.
My sack is still full of fluid and my balls still hurt, but things are gradually getting back to normal.
Oh and I should mention that I didn't try getting an erection for 5 days (didn't even try, but then got scared that I had lost it, so got a hard on and had a massive ejaculation - phew :-)
Now just worried about the swelling and the fluid and I hope that my stitches fall away (this is day 5 as I write this)
Those of you who need to undertake this surgery -- DO NOT WASTE TIME and TAKE ACTION ASAP...TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE..I found out on 01/30/09 and got my surgery done in less than 5 weeks.
If you have insurance, if you trust the doctor, if your general health is good, better to bite that bullet now and suffer those stitches now than wait a bit more and a bit more and so on...
Don't worry - you will be allright - be mindful of your general health post surgery, avoid smoking, drinking, excessively bad food (or excessive food) and post surgery generally try to loose weight. I am a swimmer since I was a child and a vegetarian who loves his Yoga and his meditation.
Prepare yourself for the few days post surgery when you will lie in bed by bringing a good book, a good set of youtube videos or whatever and catch up..take it easy, consume lots of water and start walking asap and you should be good.

Had repair on the 3rd , had a lot of swelling, but not really a olot of pain. The pain staqrted with a bowel movement on the third day, that fked up everything. they will give you laxitive, but i would start a day or to before surgery, because the pain pills will conspate you. With swelling figure 3 weeks off. I still have some swelling today on the 21st. o.O
