I had a right hand open surgery inguinal hernia repair with double mess done on the 21st. It was a late afternoon surgery got home around 7 pm. Got out of bed at midnight to pee no problem felt flush when I got back to bed a 3:30 am had to go again had wife follow me and sure enough I passed out in the middle of the pee. So don't do anything alone for the first day!
It hurt but was getting better each day until almost 4 days later then the right testicle swelled just like everyone one else. Monday morning no change called Dr and left message then found this forum!!!
Sent wife out for briefs since I only had boxers and yes it helped some. Got phone call from Surgeon on Tuesday morning and as all others he said Normal! I asked about heat or Ice he said no too both said it would just screw it up more! He did say athletic supporter would help, well I waited another day and got one this morning and it does give more relief. I feel like I will be able to get around today.
My pain is only when standing and walking different then some here but they say everyone is different and that seems to be so true.

Things I would do different!
Get the briefs prior if you don't already.
Get the athletic supporter prior and were them from the get go!
I fell the swelling may not happen or be much less If I did this from the beginning.

Also wish I had found this forum prior but I didn't want to be freaked out prior to surgery but if you need it get it done!

Had left inguinal hernia laparoscopic surgery 7 days ago and same symptoms as everyone else. Was glad to find this forum. I agree on getting tighter undies for support, and elevating when you can. Will try to elevate my legs tonight when i sleep. Have iced a few days-seems to have helped. Called Dr. and they said it's normal. I had normal incision inguinal right hernia surgery in 2005. I'd rather have had that again and endure the extreme pain the first 3 days on the incision versus this gigantic tennis ball swelling stuff, esp. if it lasts another 1-2 weeks. Tone alert! Eggghhht eghhhhhttttt, eghhhhhhhtt....Binnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng...The National Swelling service has issued a severe swelling warning for post surgical patients in your county until unknown p.m.. We have a swelling warning with swelling up to golfball to hen egg size. Repeating, severe pain warning for your left testicle until further notice p.m. At 2-3 days, Dr. Doppler shows and warns of potential swelling post surgery. Take precautions now. Take those meds, even if in a basement, elevate those legs, wear those 1970's tighty whities that your wife/girlfriend love so much, find that old high school jock strap. Some swelling may cause extreme discomfort causing crankiness and moans from the couch. Some extreme cases may have you act like Homer and ring that bell all day. Repeating, this is only a swelling warning for those that are suffering. Hang in there, no pun intended. All goofiness and comedy aside. Thank you for those that have contributed meaningful info on here.

Everything you are going through is normal to the surgery. My bad pain lasted 2 weeks. I had open ingiunal hernia surgery on 3/19/09. It doesn't get any better. Mine was done as out patient. The moment I opened my eyes, they sent me home. My left nut is still 3 times larger than the other one and hurts all the time. I didn't hurt this bad with the hernia. I also feel the mesh all the time. This surgery has changed my life for the worse.

i had inguinal hernia repair on august 12/09..... left side

i went back to work modified on august 31/09

the doctor examined me on the 27th (the testicles he felt around near the bottom and asked me where i still was numb..which is still near the incision and toward the testicle.... he told me so far everything was okay.... but i find the most discomfort near the top left side of the testicle) if i happen to touch that spot i feel a darting pain shoot up along where my incision (or repair was).. From looking around on the internet i think its the spermatic cord...... there is no pain or difficulty during sex but the testicles are very sensative still and itching at times in the scrotum...... what i am wondering is .... if anybody out there has gotten a professional opinion....am i right ? and how long should this last roughly

37 male here. Had surgery for right inguinal hernia on Monday the 31st of August. Had both local and general anesthesia. Woke up from surgery in a surprisingly good mood and my ride took me directly to Whataburger! lol Felt pretty good the rest of the day which in hindsight I attribute to the lasting effects of the anesthesia. No pain really and wouldn't even know I had surgery unless I looked down my drawers. However I did get tender in the area of surgery and a quarter sized spot of scrotal bruising later that evening but not bad.
Day 1 after surgery: Woke up early in the morning around 4 something from the pain. Didn't know how I was gonna rise up out of bed. I gingerly made it up and threw back a couple of Advils which really helped a lot. The Ultram(tramadol) the Doc prescribed of me for pain was pretty much worthless except it gave me a nice little buzz. The area around the incision was a bit swollen but surprisingly some of the bruising was already gone. As the doctor ordered I made sure to get up and walk throughout the day.
Day 2 after surgery: Woke up in pain again but not as much. Very stiff and was very careful getting up out of bed where I immediately popped a couple of Advil and had my usual coffee. I was careful not to strain while pooping and just let it take it's own time. If I sneezed or moved the wrong way I would get "stabbing" or "tearing" pains. But the bruising in my scrotum came back and in a big way. Most of my sac on the right side and some on the left ws starting to turn a dark purple. Also the swelling in scrotum really started on this day. I did go to Walmart and walked around for an hour or so as the Doc stressed many times to stay active and fight through the pain.
Day 3 after surgery: Woke up in a lot less pain. However the bruising was really getting bad. As was the swelling. It looked as if I had an eggplant hanging between my legs. Most of my whole nut sack was a solid black with a purple tint to it. I was getting a little worried. That evening I also broke out with a fever of around 101 degrees but I did not feel sick from it just a little hot. I found this website on that day and it along with some further online research quieted my fears a little bit.
Day 4 after surgery: Woke up up with very little pain and my fever was gone. However was still careful moving around as I would get the stabbing or tearing pains if I moved the wrong way or sneezed. Unfortunately the bruising and swelling of my scrotum was even worse and even part of my penis and new areas around my groin and upper thigh had new bruising. But overall I felt better except for the anxiety and worry. Called my boss and told him I was ready for work but light-duty only.
Day 5 after surgery: Woke up in even less pain and didn't feel the need for Advil but took it anyway just to lessen any aches and pains that would cause me mental stress and worry. Went back to work on this day and took it really easy. I felt a bit uncomfortable but I walked slowly and did not lift anything heavy. This seemed to be the first day that the scrotal swelling and bruising did not get worse. Swelling around my incision had really gone down by now. I was very careful on this day and avoided anything that caused me the slightest amount of pain for fear of jepardizing my operation. I wore boxer briefs with additional briefs pulled up over then to support my scrotum.
Day 6 after surgery: Woke up in very little pain. More of a discomfort than anything. For the first time I seemed to notice an improvement in the bruising of my scrotum. Seemed more of a reddish color now but was unsure if it was just my imagination. Bruising on my penis and groin was a little worse however but only a little. Pulled on my double layer of boxer briefs and tidy whities and went to work. Felt a bit stiff still and worried but overall much better and picked up my work pace. On this day I really noticed the hard lump about half an inch wide or more and as long as the incision just directly under the incision. It did not hurt but was hard as a rock just about. I researched this online and discovered it is the "healing ridge" and is completely normal. Swelling around my incision is mostly gone though.
Day 7 after surgery: Definite improvement in the bruising on my scrotum. However the scrotal swelling is still there and looks like a dark colored baseball attached to the underside of my penis when I stand in front of the mirror in the morning. In the evenings it becomes a hot and saggy sack of fluid. I am noticing some testicular tenderness on my hernia side the testicle seems to have swollen a little. Went to work on this day and felt even better than the day before but still a bit stiff and felt some sharp pains here and there.
I could feel my "healing ridge" pressing against my pants/belt and it was a bit annoying. Still wearing double set of underwear to support my package.
Day 8 after surgery: Surprised and delighted at the further improvement. I was able to rise out of bed almost completely normal. Almost no pain and the bruising was much better. In fact it even made noticeable improvements from that morning until that evening. Swelling of scrotum was still there and I continued with my brief support. Swelling of area around incision was almost non-existent. But the ridge of hard tissue under my incision was more pronounced and somewhat annoying as my clothes pressed into it while at work. Not really painful but it kept drawing my attention to it. Several times at work I almost forgot about my surgery but was reminded of it with little pains when I got too aggressive.
Day 9 after surgery: Woke up feeling even that much better. Even more improvement in the color of my bruising. Scrotal swelling still there and right testicle a bit swollen and hard. I slightly thumped it with my finger to make sure it was alive. Ouch! lol
Went for my follow up appointment and my surgeon was pleased with my progress. He related to me his own story of hernia surgery and that of a couple of his patients. He released me to do moderate exercise or anything I want but advised against doing heavy squats etc. for a few weeks just as a precaution.
Day 10(today): Feel even better and in a good mood. Jumped out of bed like normal and have taken no pain medication. Scrotum is still swollen(MIGHT have gone down some) but bruising looks better still. Have had no pains at all but that might change the first time I sneeze today. Incision looks to be healing nicely. I'm off today and gonna take it easy...

Forgot to mention: was an open surgery using the Prolene hernia mesh which covers the defect from both sides and well as plugging the hole through which the hernia was bulging through..

Day 16 update

Scrotum still somewhat swollen but slowly getting a little better. Right testicle(operation side) a bit larger than usual with "extra stuff" around it. A little sensitive to the touch but not painful. Strangely my left testicle has shrunken somewhat but seems alive and healthy. Maybe it's some sort of balancing act or compensation. Most of the bruising is gone though and gets better every day. And the incision seems to be healing much better than I thought it would. I thought it would leave a ragged scar but it's showing me signs of leaving a barely noticeable one. Not much pain to speak of in general but my "healing ridge" directly beneath my incision gets a little annoying when I walk around at work. Feels like a roll of pennies or dimes but my surgeon said this would eventually soften up. I no longer feel pain when I sneeze or cough. Overall I'm doing pretty good and feel I can do just about anything but I'm still gonna takes things slowly just to be on the safe side.
I find that when I stay active through work and all the walking I do at work I notice the healing process is much faster than when I'm off my two days in a row each week. Although I realize that everyone is different and everyone's surgery is different but in my case it has made a big difference. Of course check with your Doc each step of the way(as I have) before beginning any exercise routine or going back to work.

Had bilateral inguinal repair 7 days ago. Glad I didn't find this forum before I had it done. I've had the scrotum swelling, apparently blood draining there by gravity, though it doesn't hurt there. The pain at the repair sites is diminishing slowly. A new pain showed up about 3 days ago, a sharp burning, superpubic; maybe to do with cut nerves? I think that is getting better, too. The scotum swelling is diminishing; I think it gets worse the longer I stay upright.
I want to offer advice. Make sure you have no other problems that'd cause you to sneeze or cough - big problem. Start early with eating lots of fiber and do the stool softeners. Bowel movements take on a whole new magnitude.

I had the open hernia repair 10 days ago. There was so much swelling 2-4 days after my surgery, I thought the mesh & stitches didnt hold!!! My surgeon said everything was good after the 1 week follow up visit. All the swellling and black-blue is just part of the whole
process. It takes up to 2 months for the fluids to go away.....whereever they may go. There are ways to reduce the fluid build up but
I was told its better to let them go away naturally.

I had a left Inguinal Hernia repair on 8/31/09 and am still experiencing swelling/hard tissue under incision line and in upper scrotum area almost 9 weeks later. Although it was a very large inguinal hernia (as I was told by my surgeon), I was told it was a very common procedure and that it is a very common occurrence t have large amounts of swelling and pain. Being my first surgery, I was very nervous! As an outpatient surgery, I was released from the hospital directly after surgery. The swelling was fine and I was still a bit loopy from the anesthesia. However, the next day/night, the swelling in my scrotum was EXTREME! Easily the size of a grapefruit - if not larger. Couldn't lift my leg up just a few inches to put a pillow underneath and had to have help to simply move around in bed. Pain meds made me groggy and irritable, which didn't help the situation. I recently met with my Primary Care Physician and after discussing my recent surgery, I asked him if he wouldn't mind taking a look at the repair as a second opinion....as my surgeon mentioned in my follow-up appointments that I am A-okay and all is normal. Immediately my PCP said that "It doesn't look right" and that it may be either a failed mesh or a large amount of scar tissue/adhesions that may be problematic. I am now looking at a possible CT Scan or Ultrasound to find out if all is normal or not so much. CURRENTLY I AM EXPERIENCING: A swollen left scrotum (2X the size of my right scrotum) and the hard lump, the size of a golf ball, sits under the incision line in the upper scrotal area. Has anyone had a similar experience? Anything I can do to help alleviate the "hard-as-a-rock" lump? What exactly is it? I am hoping this won't impair my sexual funtions (erections/orgasm/etc)...any help would be greatly appreciated! I would be happy to keep responding with my experiences and will keep you posted on my recovery. Hopefully someone out there has a similar story that might help me feel better...I'm a bit wiped out over all this. Thanks.

I'm glad I found this sight. Was a little concerned about the black and blue weiner and fixins. Wasn't mentioned by surgeon post op. Figured it was normal, but really wanted to do some research before calling the Doc. Appears to be normal. If it falls off, I guess I won't beleive anything I read here anymore.

Open right side linguinal surgery 4 days ago (Friday, 11/13/09). Went well. Did a local. In at 7:00AM, out at noon. Surgery lasted about 40 minutes. Thought I could tap dance all the way home. Woke up at 3:30 AM to pee... Thought I was gonna die from the pain!!! Wasn't expecting that. Got up to quick, not thinking. That day I was sore, popped motrin every four hours. Some burning sensation between the scrotum and inner thigh. Decided I'd likely live to see Sunday.

Sunday felt wayyyyyy better. Some black and blue around the 4" incission. Still some burning where I said. Went to park and hit some golf balls for an hour (only from 40 yards and in).

Monday, went back to work (no heavy lifting or real Physical stuff) feeling some minor pain, but felt pretty darn good. Noticed some bruising around my penis and right testical. Still alive.

Tuesday (today), Feel really good (85-90%) but the color of me testies and penis is much more pronounced. No real pain though, just quite surprisingly colorful. Still a little burning sensation. Some annoying rubbing between pants and incission. I am able to take a full golf swing with absolutely no issues.

All and all, I don't know why I put off getting it repaired for so long. Yes there is some pain, but it's not terribly overwhelming and doesn't last all that long. If you are putting it off... Don't. Just get it done. And if you can arrange to watch on a monitor while you're having it done, do! Way cool.

Best advice.. Get up slowly for a while after.

Well 9 days after and I wanted to follow up. Pretty much like I'd never had it done. I feel great. Swelling and bruising is gone. Any pain is gone. Don't have to think about how I move around any more. Incission is still not completely gone, but looks great.

The overall theme here is- Is the swelling and bruising normal? I'm going with yes. Your penis and balls get black and blue. There is some pain and swelling. I'm sure everyone has their own pain threshold, but I would say that if you are having issues after a week, call your Doctor. Otherwise, I see no reason for anybody putting this kind of surgery off. I've experienced nothing that I would consider difficult to handle. If you are the kind of person who needs to be knocked out to have your teeth cleaned, you may consider this a bit of an ordeal. Everyone is different. I've had sprained ankles, thrown out my back a few times and have had some pretty bad sunburns in my life. In comparison, I'd say the hernia repair was a peice of cake.

What I found for me to help...

Use ice where it is swollen and hurts.

Get up slowly for a while after surgery.

Stay active, at least to the point of walking as much as you can.
More if it ain't killing you (obviously unless your Doc tells you different).

Good luck all.

Hi there, I'm David.

Wow! Thank you for all the posts. I am 8 days post L lapro inguiunal hernia repair.

On day 6 a hard lump "appeared" in my scrotum. I still had a lot of swelling in the general arrea and "crocodile skin" (as my missus put it!) but the pain was not as much as the previous days.

Over the next 24hrs this lump was ROCK HARD and 3inches long - like a rectangle chunck of hard cheese SERIOUSLY! IT FREAKED ME OUT!!

I called the doc and after he examined it, stated it was either a blocked tube or tissue, and if it got worse I should take myself to A+E and wait with everyone else for 3-4hrs before getting seen! By the evening I was so concerned I called a taxi and headed down there...

Several hours later...a surgeon inspected the lump (which was slightly softer but stil very very hard) said that nothing is strangulated...it is not the hernia "leaking"/coming back, and that it is just tissue discharge and I should go home and wait for it to go down/be re-absorbed by the body.

So here I am, sharing this story with others who may be freaking out about strange post-op swelling. I still am!!

I'm going to look into the Serramend stuff because this lump HAS TO GO. Its regression as far as I'm concerned and unfortunately, as so many others have stated, NO-ONE WARNS YOU what to expect Post-op - they just sling you Ibuprofen and Co-codamol and send you home saying you may feel numb for a while.

I'll check back tomorrow on this forum incase anyone replys to my post and has any questions about my experience - pain, sleeplessness, toilet use, etc, etc.

All the best to you fellow post-ops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET WELL SOONER!!

I found this site trying to figure out what's going on like the rest of you. I had my right inguinal hernia repaired 6 days ago. It was repaired via the open method with the mesh placed in front of the weak area. I'm experiencing pretty much the same pain as everyone else but the swelling of my right testical is what had me concerned. I'm not scheduled to see the surgeon for another 5 days.

Thanks for all the info - some of which was down right funny. I'm not worried anymore. The healing time may take longer than I expected though. I had scheduled 2 weeks off from work. Looks like I may be working some short days when I go back.

IMHO, the stool softener medication is probably more important than the pain medication and the importance was not stressed at all by my doctor.
