Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

I got in my reader today. It was reading between 97 and 98 and 3 times taking it. I did not have any SOB in days so that could be it? I will have to take the reading when the SOB kicks in and then I will be able to tell if it's anxiety of if my oxygen levels really dropped? Keith
Yes quite scary. I was a complete mess for my first 3 or 4 months. Today, I hit my 11 month and feel much better. I still get SOB and anxiety but nothing I can't handle after what I have been through in the beginning. I never had any of these issues prior to quitting. In the long run I'm sure we will all be glad that we stuck it out. I now look at all these people at work out smoking and feel sad for them. One guy's fingers were yellow and his mustache. I think sometimes hay would be cool to have a smoke but it lasts for a split second and it does not bother me in the least. That feels cool. Please hang in there it's a rough ride and hope you have a good support system to help you along. Keith
Best of luck I have been off the cigarettes now for over 3 years and I can't walk the length of my house, and I was never short of breath while I smoked (over 40 years). I have had x-rays and have had my chest listened many times and they tell me that I lungs are perfectly healthy. If you find a solution I would love to hear about it. I am sick of feeling like this.
Hello everyone... Yes Keith...my breathing has gotten a lot better...in fact, I would say that it's improved tremendously!   In the last week my oxygen saturation has even improved from 90-92 to 97-99!   It's almost as though something inside me woke up and is beginning to work again!   And Michele...are you referring to acne again...because I never had acne and all of the sudden I was riddled with it all over...My teenage daughter had to let me use her stuff to help clear my face...it looks a heck of a lot better now...but it was horrible...my doctor said it was toxins being released from my body!   It was horrible!
That is great. I heard a year or so and things improve greatly. Good luck and stay strong now you can go an enjoy those events with your husband and daughter again :) Keith
I am 22 now, I used to smoke avg. 8 cigarettes per day from last 5 years, before 1 month I quit smoking cold turkey. I had panic attacks and got anxiety. I was fear to get out from home. After 15 days i started smoking 1 cigarette per day as per doctor advice and quited before 1 week. And now my condition is same. I get affraid to get out of home. I had panic attack yesterday while coming frim clinic and i was thinking i will get heart attack. I had ECG before 1 month and it was completely normal also i checked blood pressure yesterday it was also normal. After i reached home i was totally normal within 5 mins. How long it will take to get out of this situation?
Part of that is your body crying for nicotine, the rest is up to you. It took me about 4 months to get a grip on my anxiety. After I did, it went away.I'm sure by now that you have been in a situation where you had some anxiety, got distracted by something only to realize shortly after that the anxiety is gone. Then it might come back after you realize it's gone. Thats anxiety..........
Well I'm almost a year quit and still have anxiety. Not as bad as it was in the begining but about about 75% better. I never had anxiety of SOB before as a smoker so quitting let the cat out of the bag. I'm learning to deal with stress where before I would just go out for a cig.
It's been over a year for me and I have recently began to feel better...but some of us start to see their condition improving in less time...hang in there....
Do you feel better now than when you were a smoker?
Angel on your oximeter what is your standing heart beat or pulse
Do I feel better now that I no longer smoke?....Good question...I just feel like my breaths are cleaner if that makes any sense.... And, my heart rate fluctuates between 80 to 83...
Thank you for replying to my Post Mr. David. What I experience is some movements in the left part of my chest and sometimes I get pains there So I get afraid of heart attack. Just before 2 days I learned to get control over the panic attacks and I am successful. But I am hungry and not getting answer why this moment or pains are coming. I am also suffering from constipation & gases problem and taking treatment on gases. Is that pains & movements are dangerous?
People like you are really ignorant. keep your opinion to yourself,
Angry? Why would you reply to post placed back in 2009? He is stating his opinion. I know of 2 kids within the last few months that landed in the hospital because of strokes. Didn't you say that you where going to be gone for 4 months?
