Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

Keith you never told me if you can get your oxygen level up to 99 %, i can keep mine up to 99%till i start walking or working then it really falls fast some times it falls down to 77 if i"M working does yours ever fall that low? THANKS RALPH
Yes it was at 99 last night. Honestly sometimes I'm not sure what to think because it was 99 last night and here I'm hacking up a storm from this cold and yet a few days ago was at 95 and 96 and I was breathing no different from the 99.
I was in Miami at the end of July on vacation with the family and wow it is hot there. I remember sitting out at 8 in the morning having breakfast and was sweating already. I have to say it was beautiful the ocean so clear and warm I loved it. South Beach was a blast the kids had a ball. Keith

So, yesterday I felt relief from SOB and today its back. I starting to find out that this is like a very long roller coster ride that I don't want to be on.
Anyway, I'm thankful that better days will come... :)

That is good that you had a day off from the SOB. When it comes on try to ignore it. I know its hard but after a while you will see that it's gone because you will not let it get the best of you. It's very strange because we are fighting our own brains, we are our own worst enemy. I use to have SOB so bad sometimes but would still go out with friends and family and they had no clue that I was dieing on the inside. But as I kept doing this more and more I guess my brain said oh well guess we can no longer get to him. It takes a while and major will power to get to that point. Last night I was sitting on the couch watching TV and my wife was on the other and out of nowhere I had a sudden surge of anxiety. Now a year ago I would have rushed up in a panic not being able to breath and got my wife all nervous and stuff but instead I sat there told myself sorry not going to happen I'm completely fine and within a minute it was gone. She had no clue. Mind you I had none of these issues prior to quitting smoking. Stay strong think positive and you will beat this. Keith
Christobelle, are you still with us, and if so how are you doing? is your breathing getting better how was your summer. did you get out and enjoy yourself. I sure hope your over this junk, god bless and take care of yourself THANKS RALPH
Today makes 470 days for me, it sure deoesnt seem like its getting any better ,if anything it seems as its getting worse,I really dont know, i can still walk and do a little work but i lost so much weight in my first year and no matter how much i eat it seems as i cannot gain any weight back if anyone knows a way to gain weight i would really love to know , I eat 4 times a day lots of fatting foods but no weight, THANKS RALPH
Keith, I bet when you get over this cold that you will breath better than you did as a smoker and this could be the end of your sob forever, thats what happened to a good friend of mine. he was almost at 2 years and never coughed up anything caught a cold , coughed up plemn, and his sob went away. I hope this happens to you you deserve a break, THANKS RALPH
Will shall see. I do feel good with the SOB. The only time it happens if I have stress. It's no longer an issue when doing physical work. Keith
That sounds more like sleep apnea which can be deadly. One time your body won't jerk to wake you and that's it. You should have a sleep study done. I have sleep apnea and I also quit smoking over a month ago, now I'm struggling to breath. It happens every time I quit and I'm sure it will pass with time. After my sleep study it was determined I needed a CPAP machine to keep me breathing while I slept.
